Hey, I've had this idea for a couple of days and I think it'd be quite interesting, useful and, quite frankly, pretty damn cool.

How about all GM versions up to 6.x are open-sourced? Or possibly even GM7? (Though I highly doubt GM7 being open-sourced).

So, what do you guys think?

EDIT: Da banna for teh revolution!

How would this be in the interest of YoYo Games?

If GM was open source, one could easily modify it and change the program completely. That, and it wouldn't exactly help YYG.

Well to start with we devs could develop extra things and Mike could come along and say "That's very nice, it's going in 8.1". And hey, how does open-sourcing Instant Play help? They're still open-sourcing it though!

That's kinda the point, Sherlock.

Commercial software is not released as open-source.
That defeats the purpose.

Few commercial software packages have source or SDK avaible for purchase separately, but price is times larger than 'normal' program price.

Overall, this is not likely to ever happen.

Yes, but often commercial software (which is still being purchased etc.) have older versions availiable as open-source.

What? All I see on the first page is a bunch of programs that have freeware counterparts or are already freeware.

And stop being snarky.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

Didn't really check the site tbh, but I'm sure there's commercial software with older versions released as open source. Well there is, I used to use it, I can't remember the damn thing though :P

Well, no offense but if you Googled you'd find something.

The burden of proof is on YOUR shoulders not mine. You are the one arguing for open source and you should be the one providing the evidence. So far you haven't, nor have you gven any decent arguments as to why Yoyo should lose a heap load of potential sales as well as open the market to rivals by releasing gm6 as open source.

I don't see a point...

Several weeks ago, some people we know (And love? That's for another post) from the community had been making a GM runner/ide as a better version of the IDE. YYGs ordered them a cease-and-desist, and likewise, they dropped the project.

Open-sourcing GM6.x and lower is dumb because one could do this exact thing, and I bet YYGs doesn't want to put up with that.

Like Nocturne said, you haven't provided a good reason. Do you just post stuff when you're stoned?

People will settle for less when it's free and I think this will only hurt sales.

I would love to see Game Maker go open source, - I just doubt it will happen. (In the foreseeable future.)

I am reminded of a post that sabriath had made during the time Mike Dailly has asked us about EXE removals in GM 8.1.

The short of it is: He asked if GM7 could perhaps be provided for free. http://gmc.yoyogames...dpost&p=3727654
Mike seemed to catch a little interest, and stated it would be nice. http://gmc.yoyogames...dpost&p=3727787

The same post was brought up in a similar discussion here on The Community but I had a tough time tracking it down. Mike stated that it wouldn't be possible with GM7, as that was Mark's code base, but the possibility remained for GM8.0. It sounded like a decent idea. Eventually, outdated versions of GM will not be supported, and thus won't be able to be registered. If you want an older Pro version of GM, you're only left with the option of piracy. Either way, YYG won't be making money, so it would indeed be nice to see those versions released for free, but not open source.

I'm sorry but if an old version became open source, it wouldn't be hard to surpass the "latest" version of GM. A few kids could get together and just pile on features, making the "commercial" version of GM obsolete.
