You got to the ending? Explains it all.

And to answer your rhetorical question literally:

-- I spent an hour on the character sprite and the engine. You're probably right, could've spent 30 minutes here minimum.
-- Another hour on level design and tiling.
-- Another hour on dialogue, king sprite, and hobo sprite.
-- Another on the ending, intermission, sound, and polish.

I'm not even sure if it worked for me correctly. I walked past the hobo, then the guy came along and said I am Everything, then I walked back to the hobo and the other guy died, then it ended?

I get what you mean. As a full game it's most definitely lacking.

You did a good job on drawing the "cutscene" images... it was unclear exactly what was happening though.
