Hi all.

I am making a commitment. I want to get better at spriting. I need this!

So I will be making a sprite, every single day, to improve. It was really hard to pull through this really crappy sprite. Here's Day 1:

5.13.2011

This is a really, really bad sprite. Sadly, this is what my sprites look like. Posted Image I must improve. Please critique me, but not too hard, I can't be an expert in one day.

Thanks.

Great idea, if you keep posting a daily update here, it should help keep you motivated: if you don't post you'll know others are aware that you're letting yourself slip. Good luck.

So you want to be a pixel artist...

This is a tutorial that is pretty old, but I think covers a lot of the theory behind creating pixel art and sprites pretty well. You would do well to read these tutorials and try to use some of the concepts presented if you really want to improve.

Good luck.

looks to me like the inside of the 'A' in May is missing the outline color. I think you would be better off just putting outline in rather than the color behind it.
Good Luck

I read the tutorial posted, decided to do an isometric sprite after reading another tutorial on it. I think it's much better than yesterday. Constructive criticism, please!

Ooh, that's actually pretty good. The 3D effect is definitely there, and the shading on the awning is nice. (That's an awning, right?)
I think it's a great idea that you're posting stuff on here and having the motivation to improve.
Anyway, good luck! Best way to improve is to practice! :)

Today's sprite:

I tried to do a lot with a limited palette. I suspect it would look better in a game with a soft glow around it.

Dang this is a great idea! I would ask if I could join as a learning experience but it appears that this is mainly focused on your improvement.
As a matter of fact, why don't we have a topic about posting in one area to increase experience/skill?

The shading on the awning is pretty good, usually generic isometric art doesn't have good looking pixel art shading like that.
Although that garage door looking thing would look better if it was shinier to match its metallic texture, and maybe a shadow should be cast onto it and the right side of the block from the awning for more detail.
The blue palette should have some more contrast, make the colors for the left and top side brighter accordingly to their shading.
