Well, did you notice all those "older initiatives?".

Let me predict how this goes:
First a month (or in case it's really popular 2 months) the chat will be moderatelly active..
Then the chat will die down, leaving only this topic. Afterwards every other month a person has searched the GMC, saw the chat-link, goes there, sees no body.. And bumps this topic wondering why no one is there, resulting in 4-5 similar replies about previous inactivity etc etc..
This will repeat until the topic is actually closed.

I doubt the GMC has enough of "community volume" to really make a chat active for a long period of time. I think the majority still come here with a "goal" in mind: getting a problem solved.

You are forgetting that the next Jam in three months will possibly keep this chat alive...

I think realtime chat will be useful for helping people, though I haven't really done any of that in the IRC yet. :P

Whether or not it succeeds, I don't see how it'd become a problem. If it fails and everyone leaves, then it fails. No scars, no deaths, no permanent injuries of any sort.

It's not even like we have to dedicate any resources to it, Zeddidragon and the other mods have been doing a fine job keeping it healthy.

Everyone heard paul23! Get out of the chat right now and stop having fun! One or two months of bonding and good times is completely worthless and we should just avoid the whole thing!

Because of that, this community chat topic is wasting valuable yoyogames server-space that's reserved for all those important topics in the community forum.

..Everyone did hear paul23.

He didn't say any such thing.

I know this is your brain child, and so your aggressiveness is perhaps expected, but that won't get us anywhere.

What value does this chat add?
And what makes this need a topic for itself here?

Don't ignore these questions, answer them. Whether the chat succeeds or last, depends on the goals that the chat sets for itself. Otherwise it WILL drift, and turn into a trolling mess. You know I've been a little unhappy with some of the behavior on there before, and it will easily descend into a far worse mess, very quickly.

For me, so far it's just been good to chat to gmc members I see about on this forum. I hope that we will see members help members with GM problems and that, but I'm dubious.. we saw an earlier topic in this very community with a very aggressive member towards a 'new' gm user.

As for point two..
One of my GMC friends ran a gm game dev competition not that long ago. He wasn't allowed any topic to start here, to generate any interest, etc, despite it being a 'community' style event. And I'm not complaining, that's fair enough.
So why a topic like this? Why should this have a topic here on this community, while other topics such as that with similar goals (community event, community participation, GM related, etc) aren't allowed?

Don't just laugh off any criticism. You aren't the first, explain why this chat deserves to be here on this community, talk about what it will offer. If it just offers a 'place to chat about things' then this really isn't a community thing, is it? It's just that.. a place to chat. Set it up in your sig's, and all 'chat members' can put it in their sig's, too. Members can answer questions in the novice Q&A, and point to their sigs as a way of getting members there.

//The chat lets people get together and just chat, or get a problem solved. The topic is here to let people know the chat exists, how else would zeddy promote it?

//Please. I've already explained that I have no problem helping 'new' members. However, I do not tolerate stupidity.

//If it's a chatroom.. how is it not a community thing? It's just as much a community thing as this forum.

@Dessert Dawg:
So after two pages on Google looking for these previous attempts I found a bunch of topics asking how to make Game Maker interact with IRC servers, one topic that was like "Hey, maybe we should have an IRC I dunno I guess?" and one topic that was actually announcing an IRC channel where the link was not only broken, but not actually clickable.

When I announced this channel there was already intertia behind it. There were people present already in #gmcjam and a lot of people wanted it to stay after the jam was over, so that's why I made this channel. It wasn't really started with a 'goal' but I'm trying to pick the most mature, trustable people I can think of as operators so they can keep people in line. You'd definitely fit the bill; interested?

There has been a couple of incidents. It's true that I'm at a fault in both events. If it helps any I felt pretty bad about it and will try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The channel simply provides the off-topic chat we see requested around here ever so often. If you'd also like to get on there and show off some early screenshots or some incredibly early alpha you think it's too early to post a WIP for then chances are it'll be checked out if you post it in the chat.

It's all those things everyone wants from the GMC that it doesn't have.

As for why I made a topic about it, contests aren't allowed their own topics for some reason but there is a topic specifically for them. Feel free to point me to the "Social gathering thingies list" topic and I'll make sure to have it moved there.

@paul23: I couldn't find the topic made by that guy you mentioned. In fact, I couldn't find that guy you mentioned. Citation needed.

Ow and then there's the official chat of the GMCG.

I'm not opposed to it, my comments are more of a suggestion for improvements.

The GMCG IRC doesn't count, because it's not a GMC IRC, it's the GMCG's IRC.

The GMC Jam's IRC doesn't count either.
By the way, Paul, don't make his point for him. None of those IRCs worked from the get-go, this one is.

To put it in different words, all of those IRCs failed from the get-go, this one didn't.

Oh, I'm interested in the chat going well, and will pop on occationally, but I suck at moderating people. I'm too soft. :P

There has been a couple of incidents. It's true that I'm at a fault in both events. If it helps any I felt pretty bad about it and will try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I'm not trying to point any fingers, and I don't really think anyone's at 'fault'. It's just a chat.. well you know. It's got a mentallity to it. That's why I'm suggesting some goals/guidelines that people can at least generally follow, to prevent things getting too silly, or out of hand.

I support the chat, I hope it goes well... it's got some good people members behind it, and I wish them the best.

Feel free to point me to the "Social gathering thingies list" topic and I'll make sure to have it moved there.

Heh, well you had a big jam topic! Unfair. :) I'm not saying it shouldn't have one, I'm just saying there are plenty of other more worthy causes (more worth causes, wth, that sounds weird) that could benefit with a discussion topic which aren't allowed them.

And speaking of which, we better start sorting out some 'community side' rules, like as in what happens when rival topics pop up? Come on, you know it. Someone wants to be mod, aren't allowed, make their own irc chat thing, and start a topic.
Someone's stupid, gets kicked, started a topic complaining of being 'ill-treated' and a 'chat box for the real gmc members'

A 'chat link' for 'GM questions only' because this one 'is too off-topic'.

Then the staff close their topics, out cry! What about this chat! Zeddy's allowed!!
So you need at least some official gmc sanctioning happening. I think. Well it needs to be considered, anyway.

What value does this chat add?
And what makes this need a topic for itself here?

1) Lots! Come now, I've seen you pop in there many times.

- Less clutter on this forum, and perhaps Novice and Intermediate Users
- Feedback is much faster
- Discussions can be of any topic (just the other night we discussed religion. Believe it or not, it was very civil - no trollfest)
- Easy to maneuver from #gmc to #gmcjam when the time comes around for GMC Jam.
- Users can ask for game ideas without having one already (not allowed in Game Ideas and Design, and is a constant issue there)
- Users can post screenshots, videos, or whatever they like without a working WIP/demo.

2) Well, according to The Community Rules, Zeddy is able to make the announcement. The rules for competitions are outlined in the pinned Competitions topic, which is why those announcements aren't allowed in separate topics.

To cover two other concerns, I'll be moderating the IRC chats as well. While there are (currently) no guidelines set, there shouldn't me any trouble as long as an OP is present. If there are any concerns, just tell one of us. I'll do my part in keeping out the garbage. The other topic is that, without announcing the IRC here, it wouldn't get anywhere. This IRC has already served wonderfully for the Jam, with peaks of 20+ members. Previous attempts at chatrooms have probably fallen flat due to just not enough community awareness and/or promotion. Why, this topic has already reached more pages than the ones paul posted - and I can't for the life of me find Chronic's IRC topic (must be that the forum database hides posts that are too old). That said, if it dies down, it'll surely be revived every time a Jam comes around (which is 3 months, unless YYG is hosting a competition).

EDIT: Left out hyperlink.

Oh that moderator guy Chronic. I tried finding him using the member search but all I got was people who weren't him, including some that didn't remotely have Chronic in their names so I don't know what gives.

As for the topics you linked, there was the one where they discussed the possibility of an IRC and the other with an unclickable link that wouldn't work unless your browser had a built-in IRC client. The others were like five years old.

I'm too soft.

You are, but most security guards never actually have to do anything other than being around. Their mere presence helps keep things calm.

The others were like five years old.

Did something vital change in those 5 years then?

Besides many of those channels (the ones I linked are only the ones I found through google, there are many more initiatives I remember) started initialy also with a few people.. Also the GMCG.
The problem with these chats is that there simply are (were?) too few people here who want a social chat to keep the chat self-sustaining - you need a topic to talk around.

The fact that 4 of the six topics you linked to have started in the last year says that the demand is increasing... And you also missed my previous point that this chat will be constantly supported by the GMC Jam...

Gonna' go out on a limb here and say the userbase may have changed a little bit. I also noticed that one of the chat topics from back then got closed because they weren't allowed and that seems to have changed as well.

Edit: Oh and the foums turned into facebook with the statuses and walls and whatnot.

Edit:

There could be a bunch of drama with people wanting to start other IRC channels

If anyone else starts an IRC channel/chat I'll link them in this topic, how does that sound?

You missed my post with my point, so I'll state it again. Here is something that this IRC has that the others which you have linked do not. It's working. From the looks of those topics (none of which with more than one page unless I am mistaken) they all seemed to have failed from the get-go. It seems this IRC is already working, and comparing it to the past IRCs is meaningless.

Also I'm in this IRC.
