I have a demo I'd like folk to try out if you could. You can find it here: 3DCube1.zip

Can you let me know how fast it runs on your system, and if it doesn't run, then let me know the system your running on - in particular the graphics card.

Cheers.

3d cube: 0-3 fps
3d cube optimized: "failed to initialize drawing surfaces" error when loading.
3d cube optimized without AA: 30-35 fps, with spikes of 1 fps.. (every other second a spike occurs)
3d cube from within gamemaker: 2-3 fps

My system:
IBM thinkpad T60 with:
intel core duo
2 GB ram
ATI mobility radeon X1400, 512 MB

Not really top end, but I still believe "minigames" should run flawlessly here :P.

Mmm... thats interesting. I'd have thought the X1400 would have been able to do 8xAA. new demo coming...

Non-Optimised ran at 3fps.
Optimised ran at... well it didn't run:

I tried to open it several times.

My graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 on a 4+ year old laptop, dual core T7200 processors 2GB RAM.

PC: Radeon HD 4800 512MB + 2GB ram + Athlon 2.21Ghz + Windows XP:
New one gives 350 FPS at start, after 10 - 15 seconds it drops to 80 and keeps around that.
8.1.71 gives me only 1FPS.

Notebook: Radeon Mobility HD 5650 2GB + 4GB ram + Intel i5 2.27GHz 4 cores + Windows7.
Around 150 FPS and drops to around 27 after 30 seconds (full one rotate of cube?), EXE from 8.1.81 - 4FPS.

Pretty much the same results as well as specs. I voted 100+ before I noticed this.

Intel i7 870 @2.93
ATI Radeon 5750

3DCube_gm8.171 - 6fps
3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised - Started off at going up to 325 fps, then slowed down to 66fps, after a minute or so back up to 325fps then back down to 66fps.

So how shoud I be filling out the poll, 60-69 or 100+, it continues the cycle between both.

EDIT:
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback - fluctuates between 370 and 170 fps

The initial value is fine... because of the way the cubes are stacked, as it rotates it starts to draw back to front, rather than front to back. This means the ZBuffer isn't used very well, and the fill rate gets hammered. ideally, you should have it stored outside in, so that no matter what view you have, the ZBuffer culls most of the cubes. If you wait long enough, the frame rate should climb again...

New demo uploaded... this should have a fall back allowing those without AA (or limited AA) to test it.

new optimized runs at 32 fps, sometimes dropping to 1 fps for 1 or 2 frames.

But uhm which one you ought to vote with?

The optimized or not optimized? - clearly the fps difference is huge..

4-5 on the normal, 18-19 on the optimized, on the fallback one once stabilized it was steady at 48-51.

On a year old HP netbook with integrated graphics 1 gig Ram:

3d cube: 0 fps
3d cube optimized: "failed to initialize drawing surfaces" error when loading.
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback = 3 fps

8.1.71: 3-4 fps
2xAA with AA fallback: varies from 128 to 246 depending on angle (?)
8xAA: varies from 35 to 70

Maybe you could take a look at MLAA? Since it smoothes edges and is pixel-based, it is much faster and often can provide better-looking results. That would be usefull for 2d games as well.

I have two machines.

On my laptop, intel i5 2.27Ghz, 4.0GB RAM, i5 integrated graphics, Win7
Normal gets 1FPS
8xAA Optimized does not run from surface error.
2xAA w/ Fallback starts at 80FPS, then over about 20seconds slows down to around 30FPS, then in about 15 seconds speeds back up to 50FPS. Also, there are artifacts on the white lines around the cubes, that are like "blank spots" on the lines. They move along the lines as the rotation happens. Also, I don't know how to describe, but the cubes are "ugly" with artifacts as well, maybe similar to artifacts to the lines. That only happened with this one, not with the "normal" version.

On my desktop, Athlon X2 3.0, 3.0GB RAM, NVidia 8600GT, Win7
Normal gets 3-4FPS
8xAA starts around 75, jumps up and restabilizes around 100, then drops again to stabilize around 50-60
2xAA w/ Fallback Starts around 230-250 about 10 seconds it slows to 140-160, then again it speeds up to 230-250. And the above artifacts did not occur at all on this machine.

On both machines the rate varies, starting fast, then slowing down, and eventually speeding up. This is of course falling in line with your expectations due to drawing order, so no surprise there, just though I would confirm it.

3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised - 250 fps (waggles between 200 and 300 depending on cube rotation (?) )
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback - 460 fps (steady)

The gm81 version runs at 4 or 5 fps
3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised.exe doesn't run at all - "Invalid floating point operation"x2 + "Unexpected error occurred when running the game"
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback.exe runs at around 320 fps

AMD Phenom II X4 965, 3.41GHz
4 GB RAM, 1600 MHz
Windows 7 64bit
ATI Radeon HD 5870

Significant speed increase there, but the optimised version won't work.
Good to see you've decided to improve the 3D support
