After a minute it dropped down to 12-15 fps

3DCube_gm8.1.71: 4-5 fps.
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback: 556-678 fps.
3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised: 556-678 fps.
A friend tested it for me on his 3 year old netbook (Win XP, 1gb ram, 1ghz cpu, mobile intel 915GM)
3DCube_gm8.1.71: 3fps
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback: 5fps
3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised: 0fps

Optimised 8xAA ran on neither, GM8.1.71 version ran at <1FPS on both, but looked fine.
Interesting results came with the 2xAA with fallback... on one PC, >10 years old, Matrox Millennium G450 Dual Head graphics card, some depth issues appeared: screenshot
The other one, a >5 year old laptop with integrated graphics, gave a flicker (full purple screen for 1 frame, then part of the block for 1 frame, then full purple again and so on). I say part of the block because only a single column appeared (I think it's the column on the edge of the cube closest to the camera). It started showing the full column, which then slowly grew smaller from bottom to top. When the whole column was gone, it showed again in full length and grew smaller. On top of that the individual cubes seemed to have some invisible faces. Bit difficult to explain here are some screenshots. screenshot1, screenshot2

fps = 73
it does take ~15 seconds to load. I noticed that the first image stays there for a second, and then from the second frame on everything flows smoothly. I haven't tested longer than about 20 seconds though.
3DCube.gm81 and
3DCube_gm8.1.71.exe:
fps = 2
it takes 10 to 15 seconds to load.
Also I noticed the two results look very different (and it's not only the anti-alias). Look:
The 2xAA version: looks like it should: image
The 8.1.71 version looks weird: image
3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimized.exe
Does not work for me. I get "failed to initialize drawing surfaces". I never get this error, I think this is the first time ever. I'm using NVidia GeForce 6600 GT on a computer from 2005 with Windows XP.
I didn't vote, because all examples gave a different result; 73 fps, 2 fps or "not at all".

3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised.exe: 120-125 fps (initially)
3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback.exe: 200-205 fps initially, jumps up to to 230-240 fps after one second, then goes down.
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core i5 M540 @ 2.35GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
4.00 GB RAM
Looks great

Wow... seriously old card... I'm surprised it ran at all!! Some very old cards have limits on the number of primitives it can submit in one go, I suspect this is killing that one stone dead.... Also looks like the Z-Buffer isn't right.
Netbooks are total crap for graphics really.... So I'm not surprised they struggle. Could be a similar issue What OS is on the machine? It does look like the number of prims is again limited here. DX8 time wasn't a great time for "large" numbers of polys....
Also I noticed the two results look very different (and it's not only the anti-alias). Look:

Yes... this was a bug in 8.1.71. I just discovered Mark reset the ZBuffer back to 16bit whenever you enabled 3D mode. No idea why! But this causes the issue your seeing with cubes poking through each other. This has been fixed in the next version, so as from the next release you'll get the proper 24Bit ZBuffer you were supposed to get.
This example is obviously pushing the envelope a little, and I don't expect any GameMaker game to do this... but in general it will mean models of 5K or so will be easily possible, even on the older hardware. Actually.. the way this is now done, it'll simply be the graphics card holding things up, not GameMaker or the CPU; which is as it should be.
I'll look into primitive limits... That will seriously cripple lower end systems, where as in the past GameMaker couldn't even approach their limits!
All these results are very helpful, keep 'em coming

All of the demos failed to run at native resolution (1920 x 1080). All Game Maker games fail to run at native:
Failed to initialize drawing surfaces. Please check that your graphics card meets the minimum requirements and that your drivers are up-to-date. If your graphics card has little memory, try switching your computer to a lower resolution.
However, at a resolution of 1024x768:
Unoptimized: Computer restarted after loading screen. Desktop was completely reorganized after starting back up.
Optimized: Received the same error message as before. Note that Game Maker games usually run at this resolution.
AA Fallback: 2 fps. Upon closing, received a Windows error message of a failed display driver.

3DCube_24BitZ_2xAA_With_AA_Fallback - 320FPS
3DCube_24BitZ_8xAA_Optimised - 227FPS
OS - Win7 Ult 64bit
Cpu - Intel Core2Duo 2.66Ghz
Gfx - Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 512mb

Runs fine and looks great. But I guess this doesn't increase 2d speed? I am not really that into 3d game development, so I would love to see 2d speed increase (there is a nice speed increase in 8.1 already, but more is always better
edit:

window xp
AMD Athlon 64 Processor
3000+
2.00 Ghz, 512 mb Ram
GM8.1.71 got me 2 fps
AA_with_AA_fallback got me 40 fps and was fairly solid there at 40-41 for 30 seconds that I ran it.
AA_Optimised wouldn't run, got the
"Failed to initialize drawing surfaces. Please check that your graphics card meets the minimum requirements and that your drivers are up-to-date. If your graphics card has little memory, try switching your computer to a lower resolution."
Error
That's a fairly decent/huge speed increase in the one that did run.
