So, thats the end of the 2nd GMC Jam! And I must say that it has been one outstanding event and I think that we should all give ourselves a smug pat on the back!!! I would especially like to thank ShadowLink for the GMC clock and the theme picker, and Zeddidragon for his SSE-vote-counting-tool-thingy... so another pat on the back for them!

The next GMC Jam is scheduled for three months from now at the end of July and I hope to see you all there!!!!

Thank you!!!

Nocturne

EDIT: For those that wish to continue the community spirit of the Jam, we have maintained a chat room... HERE. So, sign up, join in and have fun until the next Jam!

Come back to this topic if you're interested in what I'm doing. Live updates whenever I need a break!

Note that my game will follow the jam theme, the theme is smart and open enough to adapt my existing design ideas, which were already hovering around the theme anyways.

This theme doesn't fit my original idea at all. Now my game is going to be ten times more ridiculous. `~' Maybe that isn't a bad thing though.

Anyway, good luck everyone. Hopefully I make more than just sprites this time.

I've now coded the movement completely, coded the shooting mechanics, a base for bullets, and finally added some particles to the player character.

I feel like I haven't made a heap of progress in 5 hours, but that's because I've been too busy reading other posts n_n

Here's a screenie of the current state:

So I have the basic concept down, and the menu and intro music composed...and then I took a long break to watch "Mock the Week" on YouTube. As much as I want to submit an entry, I'm starting to see a pattern here that may prevent that :lol:. But I'll try my damnedest.

I revolves (literally, in some cases), around the concept of distorting the player's perception of the room (eg, flipping sections of the room, rotating them, shrinking them, etc...). I would classify it as puzzle, mostly, but alot of platforming skill in there as well.

I´m making a procedurally generated maze game (roguelike? maybe...) called "Virtual Insanity".

At the moment the most insane thing about it are the amount of special effects it uses!!! But hopefully it will have some cool gameplay elements too...

PS: Yes, I saw Tron:Legacy last week... have I been inspired?

When I woke up this morning, I had a sudden idea for a game. I'm at my grandparents' house for the weekend so I can't work full-time on this project, but I'll try to get something whipped up for the Jam.

Update (about 10:30 EST):

So far I've got some cactus-like shaky visual effects (imported from my failed Game Prototype Challenge project), a nice little platform engine (copy-pasted from my failed GPC project), and a simple player character that I sprited and animated this morning. (Yay for recycling!)

I think it looks pretty snazzy but it's something that you need to see in motion to get the full effect. Here's a (very early) screenshot anyway:

I'll tell you right away! I use an object I call oSurface that disables automatic drawing in the creation event (set_automatic_draw(false)). Other than that it looks like this in the end step event:

surface_set_target(srfSurface);
draw_clear(c_black);

screen_redraw();
surface_reset_target();

view_wview[0] = 400*ScaleSize;
view_hview[0] = 240*ScaleSize;

draw_clear(c_black);

draw_surface_stretched(srfSurface, 0, 0, view_wview[0], view_hview[0]);
draw_surface(srfScanlines, 0, 0);

screen_wait_vsync();
screen_refresh();

view_wview[0] = 400;
view_hview[0] = 240;

srfSurface is made at game start and is the same size as the view you use. view_xport and view_yport needs to be scaled appropriately before you enter the room as well.

srfScanlines is just a surface where every other line is 50% visible and pure black. You can use a pre-made sprite for it but I use a surface-based approach so I can generate it according to the scaling you want.

Be forewarned that it's a she-dog to get it working when you have a view that moves around.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to enter the jam this time. I have a terrible headache, and programming will only make it worse. But this year, I'll actually play the games.

EDIT: Oh, and I must say that I love the graphics in True Valhalla's and Mark's games.

I'm not sure how far this will get (I'm just starting) but here is the idea I'm working with:

Title: Wry little pill face

Disaster has struck at the hospital for the criminally insane were you work as head nurse. All the patients on your ward have escaped and you and 1 orderly must subdue the patients (who are overdue for their meds) and return them to their rooms. (careful not to OD them, kill too many and you might lose your job!)
Your task is to collect pills and fire them at the patients, the orderly does his bit on his own, if the pills wear off before the patient is back in their room, you will have to repill them.
Several pill types as bonus
Top down shooter style with a puzzle twist

edit:
I think new pills will fall out of the orderlies' pockets

I try not to get too drawn into the art phase. Cause I'll end up making so many details that I forget to start implementing everything. Fortunately, my game is pretty simple, and it's going to have a lot of visual and sound-related stuff to keep the player immersed. Going to just use the simple platform mechanics, so I can spend more time on drawing the level pieces.

My game isn't exactly "Insane"... but at least I found a way to incorporate the word "Insane" into the story.

One thing I've noticed in the screenshots so far is that (apart from zeddy's game) the WIPs seem to be based extremely loosely, or not at all on insanity. Hopefully the gameplay is a bit more theme-ful.

Oh, trust me. My game is 110% based on insanity in the most artful (and frustrating) way :D . That is, if I make it on time. It's proven quite difficult for me to stay focused on one thing for so long :lol: .

:GM123: Are you an artist who likes creating original creature designs? Maybe you can help out with Elementa here! Give it a look; you might like the idea :)

Those graphics are absolutely beautiful. I'm jealous now.

What'd you use to make them? And if its not a secret, how'd you do that motion blur effect(Or is it just part of the sprite)?

Ditto.

My plan for the player to fill the shoes of someone that suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, trying to escape their own delusions, proved over ambitious for the time frame.

Thank you very much :) I'm not finished with them yet either! I'm using PhotoShop and the GM editor - that's it. For the motion blur I'm simple storing the previous 5 steps into an array, and then drawing a blurred version of the parent sprite at each of those previous steps.

This game will actually be open source so you can look through it yourself even :)

Interesting technique, it seems pretty efficient. I never thought to do motion blur that way(If I ever make another abstract game I'll keep that way of doing it in mind ;)).

I'm really looking forward to playing your game. Good luck in the jam. :D

Damn it. Distracted by Doctor Who. I'm really going to try and submit an entry, but I'm warning you all now that it may not happen.

On a related note: did any of you also watch the new Doctor Who ("Day of the Moon")? The ending was... what?!

Just started working on my game 5 hours ago. Here's what I have so far!

Basically you play as a military android that's been infected by a virus. The virus, created by hackers who want to steal your technology, guises itself as your subconscious and is guiding you into a trap. However, it tricks you into thinking its actually helping you.

My aim is to make the game one stage and one boss fight (the hacker's trap), since I started a day late and don't have much time. I still have a lot of sprites left to do. =w=
