Occasionally topics are created about Games not getting the attention they deserve. My position is almost always, good games will almost always get noticed.

I still stand by that, but have found an exception. Specifically Erik Leppen's creations.

The guy is a prolific game creator, he is very experimental, his games are unique, especially when compared to the typical GMC creation, and his games are high quality. He's also a YYG's competition winner.

Sadly, many of his creations only have a handful of replies. Admittedly, I'm one the worst offenders of playing games and then not acknowledging them. I'll try to change.

If you're looking for something to do:
  • click on Eric's profile
  • choose Find My Content
  • change View all topics Erik has posted in or started to View all topics Erik has started
  • clickupdate
  • go to his creation topics and play them

This guy's work deserves more attention.

And FWIW, he's also a real class act.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. Regardless, I'll give them a go when I have more time.

There is absolutely no sarcasm. It is 100% genuine.

I am an avid follower of Eriks games and greatly admire his skills as a designer and programmer... I can only agree with NPT that he should be better known, especially as his games are MUCH more accessable than other "well-known" GM users (you know who I am talking about!) and are also highly polished and well thought-out. I also plead guilty to not commenting on his work as often as i should have!

PS: His latest game "Rollacoasta" is fantastic!

Underrated? His games were played by thouthands of people, and in 2008 top sections of most featured and top-rated games were populated with ones by him. But, true, those topics didnt got a lot of replies.

I'm a bit worried now. Does Erik have a terminal disease that only NPT knows about? Often when someone in his prime is given a testimonial, it means something bad is about to happen.

We love your games, Erik. We'll always remember you. ...sniff

Did Erik give you money to say that NPT :P

My position is almost always, good games will almost always get noticed.

I disagree with that. It takes some marketing to get your game known enough that people start talking about it. Erik doesn't even have a website. How are people like you who like his games suppose to know when he develops a new game? I'm sure if Erik did some work at becoming well known then his games would be well known.
For anyone who's looking for a link his games can be found here
Whoa he made bridge the gap! That's one of my favorite games.

just because a game is of high starndard does not mean it won't go ,for the most part, ignored. Especially if we are limiting this to yoyogames and the gmc.

I'm not sure how many people have heard of block0man, the creator of the FTW series(as far as i know). His FTW series, a collection of joke games that just so happened to troll those who took them serial, got far more attention than his later, serious projects. Like the fantastic, Rogue Hockey, which only has 70 plays as opposed to Zelda FTW which has over four thousand.

I'm not sugesting Zelda FTW isn't beautiful in it's own right. But making games about games works far better for getting attention than genuine quality.

This is called the internet, everyone has overlooked gold before, and it's not going to stop. You can pour your heart and soul into something and release it for free, but no one will care unless you advertise the living jesus out of it. Even then, if isn't good enough to go viral it just dies.

I agree with you though, Erik has done some absolutely fantastic games, my favorite still being Bridging the Gap. I can still remember back in high school, absolutely everyone was playing that game. Hundreds of kids on a daily basis would fire it up whenever they where at a computer to see how far they could get, it went on for an entire year. It's wonderful that it doesn't even matter if a game gets any attention, you keep on moving forward for the sake of making games, and seemingly nothing more.

I hope underrated creators everywhere are inspired by this topic, even if we don't show it, we know you're there and we appreciate what you're doing.

Sorry, NPT, wrong guy. :P

I'm all for supporting GM dev's, and on the larger scale, Erik Leppen is very underrated, so very cool to give him some support.

But this guy has 3 of the most played games on yoyogames.
Bridging the Gap 56685 plays
Shoot 2008 24914 plays
ByteAlity Tower Defense 33711 plays

As far as the GMC and Yoyogames go, he's a colossus.

Combined with his already high profile from his great games, winning a competition gives a gold star beside his name, ensuring ALL his games.. even the non-featured ones, stand out on the YYG's website.

Underrated? Sure. Most underrated? Nooooo way, hosea.

(And if you say he isn't getting enough attention here on the gmc, well many times people comment on the yyg's page, if that is where the download is. I sometimes comment on both)

But I very much applaud this topic in general. I remember back when Prison Ball was first released, despite it being rather low-profile, and rather flat tbh, it was really, really, really encouraging to get some flattering comments, or any comments at all to be honest. And when a player returned like a month or so later calling for it to be featured, it meant a big deal.

I think members underestimate how much value a simple comment can have. I noticed a few months(?) ago, a member here called Slayer64, (who makes cool games, btw) would leave simple comments like 'nice game' 'fun' 'hard' and such.

I was very much impressed by this. Up till then, generally speaking if I wasn't going to write a 'full comment', I didn't, somehow naively thought it wasn't worthwhile replying.

Btw LazyBrainGames(view-topics started, find games, play, comment)

I played a few of them on YYG's, and a few of his other games when he was under a different name, (you may remember Mark Overmars reviewed one of his games, back when he was doing stuff on the glog) but haven't really commented on his topics here[time to start rectifying that!!]. He also receives a bit of love elsewhere for his games, but strangely has a very low profile on YYG's/GMC Would love the community to show him some more support, he's a fantastic, hardworking dev, and I really like what I see coming from him. Watch-this-space, because at the rate this guy makes games, it's gonna fill pretty quickly!!

I'm not talking about his work being recognised on other sites, or even on www.yoyogames.com. I'm talking about a GMC member being recognised by the GMC.

At the time of the original post:
  • Roolacoasta - 1 month on the GMC - 7 replies
  • Color Strip Maker 3D - 5 months on the GMC - 2 replies
  • Vijfentwintigspellen - 6 months on the GMC - 6 replies
  • Shoot 3 - 8 months on the GMC - 8 replies (but only by 3 unique users)
  • Connects - 8 months on the GMC - 1 reply
  • Duel Racer 3 - 0 replies
  • LinePatterns - 1 year on the GMC - 1 reply
  • EAU - 1.5 years on the GMC - 21 replies
  • AJO - 1.7 years on the GMC - 3 replies
  • Keep Moving - 1.8 years on the GMC - 4 replies

These games are all good, many of them excellent. He responds to the GMC's lack of response, by creating more games, staying positive and helping others. That's why he's a class act.

The guy and his work deserves more recognition.

I think Ted Lauterbach (guaranteed wrong spelling) is a great developer that is under-rated.

That's all the comes to mind.

I've enjoyed several of Erik's games, and yeah, I'd say he's an underrated developer too.

His lukewarm reception here says a lot about the GMC. The membership of novices and beginners (and mostly kids), is often more responsive to other novices and beginners. Kids like to talk to others at their own level -- and there's nothing wrong with that.

But this is why mediocre WIP topics and silly Design topics become "mini chatrooms", that often get more attention. It's fun, but it doesn't necessarily reward the more skilled members.

The only solution is that we all post more in Creations topics like Erik's (as you suggested yourself).

Honestly I'd blame the names. None of these make me wanna click on a topic, they have the "noob game" feeling.

I disagree, look at Darkverse topic. Here at GMC the presentation is everything, name and description affect more than 50% of the visits.

I think your discounting the effect the dual existance of YYG's and the GMC have.

I've played a few of Erik's games on YYG's. I commented there, (for the most part) and rated. Same for a lot of games.

Coming over to the GMC, hunting those games up, and commenting isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But it's good to show support for games you like, so I'll bare that in mind.
