To be more precise, Game Maker requires a resonably modern PC running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, or later. A DirectX 8 (or later) compatible graphics card with at least 32MB of memory is required for most created games. It requires a screen resolution of at least 800x600 and 65000 (16-bit) colors (preferably full color). Also a DirectX 8 compatible sound card is required. Make sure you have the most recent drivers installed. Game Maker requires DirectX version 8.0 or later to be installed on your computer. (You can download the newest version of DirectX from the Microsoft website at: http://www.microsoft...ndows/directx/.) When designing and testing games, the memory requirements are pretty high (at least 128 MB and preferably more, also depending on the operating system). When just running games, the memory requirements are less severe and depend a lot on the type of game.

You don't have Windows 8? I didn't know you could get Internet hooked up to your cave.

Futureproofing their requirements so when you view it 5 years down the line you can't giggle because it was like they didn't anticipate another windows installation beyond 7.

Although, they're future-proofing on a version that they can't test it on. So, if we find that GM8.1 doesn't run on Windows 8 (which is actually Windows v7  ), then we can giggle at their requirements.

Halo 2 requires Vista only; but it works well enough on 7.

PS: Wait.. I intended my first post as a joke and now I'm making it a serious argument... I'd best leave it there. :)

In fairness to the OP, this IS hard to find. YYG really should post (or link) this on the GM 8.1 download page.

Most users like to check system requirements before downloading and installing new apps.

It is not mentioned, but you will also need Service Pack 2 installed. That means that you are extremely unlikely to manage to install GM8.1 on computers with something earlier than Windows XP.
Earlier GM versions do not have this requirement though.

I have gotten game maker running mostly fine on a 399Mhz AMD K6, with 192MB of ram and 4MB of video memory. With DirectX 7. If you want decent performance, I'd recommend something much better.
