This forum is an incredible learning tool. If you download something from there and can't figure out how it works, just ask the author. I'm sure he or she will be more than happy to help you out.
In addition to the Open Source forum, keep Game Maker's manual open at all times. It has a very intuitive interface and will certainly better your understanding of the mechanics of GML, and Game Maker in general.

If you want to be taken more seriously, the least you could do is read about
software versioning. Version 1 of something indicates a stable, finished product. If there are a few bugs but everything is mostly smooth, you are in the beta stage of development. If there are many bugs, especially if those bugs make it impossible to interact with core gameplay features, you are most definitely in the alpha stage of development.
Also, Why did he draw the box over the sprite? Why doesn't he just use the script made by the community for making real mouse boxes instead of a sprite that would make it even more complicated to get to work.
Because it was probably thrown together in Microsoft Paint, not Game Maker.
