Vexed Hedgehogs

GM8 -- But all the smart stuff is from the Extreme Physics extension available at a GMC near you. A work of genius for GM.
Now 9.7Mb
1024x768, fullscreen on F4

This was made for the Experimental Gameplay Project March/April, where the theme is Cheap Clones. It would kind of spoil things if I went into too much detail, but it is a 'proper' game with 12 levels and some touches I am proud of. It remains a Cheap Clone, so I am not looking for points for originality or even execution.

[Edit] And then I found I was enjoying myself so much that I massively expanded this, and took away the impossible levels and the glitches and much of the 'cheapness'. I probably ruined its fit for the EGP theme, but this is a far better and more playable game.

As ever, any and all feedback (except pointing out that the basic gameplay is somehow familiar) is what I am after.

Angry Birds.

What is that thing about selling the game at 15.99$? The game needs a lot more polishing before you do so, it needs cooler effects and sound, and more musics I don't know... It's not a bad game, but it lacks some professionalism.

Um. The hint is in the theme for the Experimental Gameplay Project quoted above?

Lol I know sorry, the way I just said "Angry Birds" seemed like if it was a bad thing, but I was just mentionning the game that was cloned.

Wow! This is a GREAT clone! Very fun and very well done.

The only thing I suggest is more than one song looped, and a few more sound effects if possible, wherever they fit.

Other than that really well done!

I actually enjoy this more than angry birds ^.^

In which case I wonder if I have failed? Glad you enjoy it. I am updating this at the minute with lots of goodies I have found inside Extreme Physics, and I will get around to putting some decent audio in too.

Thanks for the really positive feedback.

So this began as a very quick throwaway joke in response to the 'Cheap Clones' theme at the Experimental Gameplay project. For those who don't know EGP, this meant a 7 day dev time, which leaves a lot of raw edges. Anyway, what started as a quick Angry Birds clone proved far too entertaining to leave alone, so I have polished a lot, added a lot, and hopefully introduced some interesting features and ideas. This took more than the original 7 days. It borders on a deep philosophical question, but I am not entirely sure it is a clone any more.

The first 12 levels were a mash up of Angry Birds, Bloons, Peggle and Worms. The 18 extra levels are a lot looser in their references, but I am particularly proud of the Donkey Kong level (28).

Hope people enjoy it, despite it having grown to 18.3 Mb because of the audio I finally introduced.

Now Features:

30 levels -- see how many videogame references you can spot.
13 powerups, including the nuke, a donkey made of cement like material, banana bomb, beach ball and army men in parachutes.
spinny things, rotating things and swinging things -- courtesy of Maarten Baert's wonderful Extreme Physics.
Level skip system so you can progress even when you are beaten by a level.

I really should leave this alone, perhaps, but it really is a lot of fun to play (and make), and I would really like some feedback.

Now:

54 Levels
** It is well known that 'more' is a substitute for 'better' design **
3 Worlds plus a 9 Level Royal Wedding World where you can fling blue hedgehogs at cloners attempting to disrupt festivities.
** Because all the best games have seasonal themed bonus levels **
18 Power Ups
** Because sometimes ballistic accuracy isn't enough **
Powerupadeia
** For the discerning player who wants to know what that hedgehog in a crash helmet might do **
Achievements
** Because random reward is so much more satisfying than actually achieving things **

Includes:

Warp Pipes
Portals
Tetrimos
Biplanes
Life Guards
Guardsmen
Beefeaters
On-off switch spikes
Moving platforms
Sentry Guns
Hinges
Rotors
Working TVs playing arcade classics

and much, much more...

Just a happy little bump to celebrate that Vexed Hedgehogs appeared in the Jay is Games Weekend Download. Truly an honour.

From Jay is Games:

Vexed Hedgehogs (Windows, 9.7MB, free) - An entry in the March/April Experimental Gameplay Project with the theme "cheap clones", Vexed Hedgehogs does exactly that, shamelessly cloning just about every popular casual gaming genre from Angry Birds to Peggle. Fling hedgehogs with the slingshot to take out the EVIL cloners who steal unique indie game ideas and market them as their own. Get points for destroying objects, and— wait, let's face it. You're not in it for the gameplay, you're in it for the laughs. More parody than a Mel Brooks film collection, Vexed Hedgehogs will give you a laugh or two along with its surprisingly fun gameplay.

Get it from GameJolt or YoYo.
