Just reading one of my favourite computing sights and stumbled across this article:

mentions GM as a ever popular tool. What do you think of it?

The enormous recent growth in hobbyists is definitely an influence in the gaming community. I think we'll influence the commercial games industry too. We may be already.

I bet we already are, and once we start to see GM HTML games I think we'll really influence the gaming industry.

That does not sound very likely. Much of the Game Maker functionality will not work in a browser. If it happens anyway, many features will need to be removed.

I like the term hobby. I've never been a fan of casual games, even if I'm not one to bag on them. Being a hobby brings game dev and games into a realm not reserved to hardcore gamers without being games like farmville and shovelware for the Wii.

I think I find the premise of hobby developers becoming commercial developers much more interesting. When someone realizes they have the potential to turn their hobby into a way to support themselves this is very powerful. If you can do something you enjoy to make a living, life becomes a whole lot more enjoyable than a 9-5 slave job.

I use Game Maker as a hobby tool as-well. I currently am not too interested in trying to make a commercial game with it. I do like the idea of offering extra "exclusive :o " content for donations of any amount though. Ad support is another interesting route. :)

I currently use GM as a hobby program, but I'm using it on my way to commercial. I don't know if I'll get to the point where I'm selling games I make with GM. Mainly I'm learning the ins and outs of programming and game design so that when I get into C++ I'll have an easier time of it.
