The game I've been working on has very little room for putting up status updates, so I've been working with particle systems to attempt to show the player their current condition via the player object, rather than having a log of everything that's going on.
In order to get the particle systems right, I made a simple little GM file (using GM8 Pro) that allows me to experiment with a particle system until I've achieved the effect I want, then I can simply move the code over into my game.
I thought it might make a good example file for people wanting to play with particle systems and see the sorts of things you can do with them.
Effects in the app:
S - a spark effect, like striking a metal object with another metal object.
D - a cloudy, disease effect.
F - On fire!
E - A bloody explosion.
B - A wound opening up.
O - A green slimy wound opening up.
R - A rain cloud appears over the player's head.
The initial code for the fire effect came from someone else-- I apologize to that person, but I cannot seem to track down their name on here-- but I tweaked it to fit the way I wanted it to look. The rest of the effects are of my own design. Feel free to use them and play with them to come up with your own. And I'd love to see any results!
Just please don't use the player sprite for any games, as that's the little guy from my game in development. Thanks!
