Forum Rules
• By posting your artwork here, you agree that other members may use it in their own games.

Thanks marsiic! I read some of the pinned topics but I missed that one. I'm a moron. lol...

Anyway, that's good news for my students. It takes too long to get permission from each author. So I'll tell them the art here is like open source -- free to use as they wish.

And thanks to the artists posting all this stuff. It's a great resource for beginners.

Well, lets say that I doubt that rule is legally binding.

I can pretty much guarantee that 90% of the artists (and game dev's) that use this forum even know of that rule. Some people even use this forum to 'sell' their art work.. which they do post here. It's not so good if a guy pays for this art works, then sees it appearing in other people's games.

Do feel free to pinch whatever you need for place-holder graphics, but it's VERY good practice to contact the author, or the person he made the graphic for, and get explicit permission to use them.

There was a case before of someone who got lots of his graphics via a forum thread (and very good graphics they were, too!) and then someone else started a project, using those graphics. Needless to say, it wasn't particularly well received, and the thread was closed down (regardless of that rule).

The rule is a bit silly, but it does mean that people who want to keep their sprites to themselves, contact the artists by PM. But others aren't even aware of that 'rule' and share them anyway... although 9.99% there is no harm-or-foul.

When ever anything is made ever it is copyrighted to the original creator... Unless its work fore hire which i suppose you could consider this? In which case the employer is the owner. The GMC rules are not law.

C'mon raven, don't turn this into a legal discussion. The GMC rule has NOTHING to do with copyright, or any **** like that.

Look, when artists post their work here for others to use, they should expect others to use it. Right? this isn't an "art gallery".

Posting your art here, doesn't mean you lose ownership. It's still yours. But by posting here, you're allowing others to use it. What's so complicated about that?

Most countries have accepted similar copyright laws. Even if a work is posted on a website such as the GMC it is still exclusively copyrighted to the respective owner(s). They do expect their work to be used... by the person they are giving them to. If, as you say, they still have ownership then they can regulate who may use them.

I would ask nicely and try and see if Beda will let you use them.
If you would like your own I am a decent graphics artist and I would be willing to help you make whatever you need.

It's for the students.

Not if they post them on a public forum, whose users assume they're for public use. lol... An author would be pretty damn stupid to believe he could "regulate" who uses them.

Look, Beda's a big boy. He wouldn't post his stuff here if he didn't expect others to use it. If any of my kids use these, I'll encourage them to PM Beda and thank him. How's that?

This isn't for him, he's a teacher.

A volunteer instructor actually. My own kids used GM when they were at home. Now I help out in the creative-arts after school program and teach kids how to use GM.
