Well, my last topic seems to have mysteriously disappeared, and since I have not been given any information regarding the subject, I'm going to assume it was a forum glitch, since there's nothing in the rules about not being able to discuss a Gamemaker alternative in this board.

Any questions about C++, go ahead and ask.

Here, I got a question. I know the language, and the SDL library. So, what library should I learn next? Also what is your IDE of choice? I have been changing it up lately. I started with Dev-C++, then I tried Code::Blocks which was better. Then my dad bought me Visual Studio 2010 for my birthday.

They probably removed is because you were breaking the rules. I guess they forgot to message you about it afterwards.

You know, if I wanted to talk about C++, I'd probably go to one of the many C++ programming forums out there. :)

Now excuse me, I'm going to go some place to discuss my fake programming language.

I suggest OpenGL/GLUT, as it's pretty much on par with commercial-level DirectX if you're willing to put the work in, and from my experience it was easier to learn the basics. As for an IDE, I was taught using Dev, and so I've been using it. I tried to switch to Code::Blocks but it broke my code.

All posts must be related to Game Maker -- except in the Games in General Forum.

However, we will not allow discussion of anything illegal, so the following topics are not permitted:
illegal distribution and license violations
cracks
emulators and ROMs
unauthorized patches

C++ falls into none of these categories.

Back when I used Gamemaker, I didn't really know of any viable alternative. When I asked the community for a suggestion, I got yelled at and was effectively told that I was being stupid for trying to do something else. I'm hoping that there are others like me with aspirations but no direction, and I'm willing to point them in that direction.

Aspirations but no direction? It depends on what your aspirations are. If you want to make games..

Anyway

I've used flashpunk (flashpunk.net) which is a free flash library for making games, which is made to work with a free flash compiler. It isn't bad, and I'd recommend for any GM-er wanting to get into flash. [it was written by an ex-GM user, so there are similarities)

Klik'n'play is a viable alternative to people who find GM a bit complicated. Can't say I think much of it, but..

I very much like C# as a language, and there's that great IDE Visual Studio which makes coding in it so much more enjoyable.

I've heard good things about Python, which can be used with a thing called Pygames.

Most of these, it's simple enough to go down to your local library/bookstore, and pick up a book on C++, C#, Python, Java, Flash, or whatever you've got your eye on. And there are good support forums for those different languages/programs, too.

I'm guessing this might be why your other topic was removed:

This forum is a place to discuss video games in general

And I think it's pretty fanboy-ish to call C++ a real language, and imply that GML isn't. GML is as much of a language as Perl or any other interpreted language is, even if it lacks features.

Okay, thanks! I couldn't decide, but I guess you're right. If I learn OpenGL I will be able to port it to things like Ubuntu easier.(Right?) Anyways, has Intel improved their chipsets at all for more compatability with OpenGL? I rember when I first started using C++ (I am an undedicated learner, it took me about 3 years of off and on learning to understand most of the concepts, and I am still learning stuff today.) I read an article somewhere which said how Intel chipsets are terrible with OpenGL.

Furthermore, I like the idea of having topics about C++ here on the GMC. The reason I explored other languages was because of topics where people talked about alternatives. Anyways, isn't Game Maker supposed to be more of a stepping stone? Also it is kind of hard moving on to another community when the GMC has taught me so much.

Another moderator removed the topic you posted previously. This forum is for discussion of Games In General, hence the name. Discussion of game development tools other than Game Maker are not allowed anywhere in the GMC forums. I direct you to the rules, specifically these:

All posts must be related to Game Maker -- except in the Games in General Forum.

Although you may discuss non-GM games, this forum is NOT a place for announcing your non-GM games or for discussing non-GM tools.

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to close this topic now.
