That is something I'm just disinclined to change; I think as an informational website the colors are very well suited. Wikipedia has pretty much the exact same color scheme - white, black, grays and some blue. I think it works well.

But thanks for the comment.

I like the color scheme. I think the website was made really well, but the content on the website is even better. The forum will be very useful for anyone who needs help implementing an MMORPG.

You have not followed this page properly. The script (part of 39dll) is either missing or renamed. My guess is missing. That means you haven't included the 39dll scripts in your new game.

Open any example on the site, open the scripts tab, and you'll see all the scripts you are missing. You can download the base with the 39dll scripts included at this link, and then build your game from that.

I like the color scheme. I think the website was made really well, but the content on the website is even better. The forum will be very useful for anyone who needs help implementing an MMORPG.

Thank you very much :)

What does this mean? I have a script named scr_cilent_init what is wrong?

That means, again, the script is missing or renamed. You need to actually make the script! Follow the tutorial properly and this is all explained. If you have any further issues please post them on the forum and I will answer them, but please keep this topic free of issues with your project - this thread is for the website itself :)

You named the script scr_cilent_init instead of scr_client_init.

I just found the site, and I think it's great. I mean, really. I don't understand why people are so worried about how the site looks, it's loaded with really useful information and it's easy to navigate and read. I think that's all that matters. I actually think I would be less inclined to take it seriously if it was colorful and full of hideous animations (what is this, the 90s?). I think it's just fine exactly how it is.

Anyway, THANKS for this GREAT information!!

MyINI.dll
Another application extensions to Game Maker, this DLL is used for quick, easy and powerful file manipulation. It is included in all of our examples for free.

Typo detected! Remove the s

Nice design, very clean. I've commented on the site before so.. just wanted to inform you of the typo.

Update!

A new example has been added to the site: Shooting & Weapons

I've also completely redesigned the website, and made some additions (in particular the new "featured" section which displays new examples and featured games on every page).

Fresh feedback would be very useful if you have a spare minute!

I've been following your examples (which are fantastic by the way - very easy to follow + clear).

I just had a question about large masses of data that need to be transferred from the server to the client [ie - loading a map]

The maps I have are broken down into an array ( chunk[x,y] = material ), and are generally about 1000x1000 big.

What would be the best way of transferring this many (about 10,000) values to the client?

Do I send each value via an individual packet, crunch 15 or so values into a packet, or send them all in one big packet? ..or can you even do that?
I'm totally stumped here, and help would be much appreciated! :D

Designate a grid of cells to be your view radius. Say 16*16 cells (256 cells), and then split your gameworld up into grid sections that size. Load the 9 grid areas around the player's current area, and whenever he moves into a new grid section just load the next relevant ones.

Much in the way MineCraft would. Once loaded, store the cells in memory and when a player re-enters a zone make sure the server updates any cells in the relevant grid sections that have change (will require a timestamped list on the server).

You should send each grid section of cells in one packet.

256 cells in their own packets with 4 bytes of data: 11264 bytes total
256 cells in one packet with 4 bytes of data: 1064 bytes total

I have a bit of an issue regarding what is otherwise an extremely good example that I am seriously on board with. I've been looking for simple online functionality for years - I know once I get down the basics of connecting to a server I'll be fine.

I have GM7 and I don't really want to spend $40 I don't have on GM8. Therefore, I wasn't able to use the example files. I manually installed 39dll, which was easy enough since it was presented as a GM6 file, but after putting in the scripts I got errors because of the missing MyINI. I've searched the internet up and down for MyINI and it's nowhere to be found. Would you happen to have an old version of MyINI sitting around that I could use, or be kind enough to direct me to one? I love your tutorial and want to keep using it really bad, but I've hit this road block and I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks,
saintsalive

Thank you so much! Iv'e been tinkering with C++ for years and love my GM lite! soon I'll have pro, and this will be MY FIRST project! But a few Q's: How does the top down shooter example work, and how do you create your own packets? Also, do you mind if I distribute my own game using the shooting example with my own touches? How does the top down example work? Sorry I can't really answer that in a post - the examples are built so they are heavily commented. If you have gone through the tutorials, you should be able to follow them. How to create your own packets? Read the tutorial, it's in there :)

You may distribute games made with the shooting example, however not as source code. Please read the distribution policies on every page of the examples.

Thanks!
