Another public outcry would be a distinct possibility.

Sure, whenever anything changes people are bound to complain about it, but unless the name is changed to "Happy Fun-Time Games Factory" or "Baby's first software development studio" I don't think we'll have the same problem as last time.

They feel threatened by the possibility of change, that's all it takes. Besides, there's no harm discussing peoples thoughts on the name "Game Maker", there's nothing else more interesting going on around here so why the heck not.

Although your point is tongue in cheek, it has a lot of validity.

There are a lot of parallels that can be made between a change in name and a change in logo.

A lot of people didn't like the old logo, thinking it unprofessional, not representative of the product, childish, whatever. But, you can be sure that whatever replaces it will be heavily scrutinised. Another public outcry would be a distinct possibility.

Not entirely parallel. I don't recall anyone but Sandy ever disliking the old logo. It was only after he started making communist references and other random criticisms people started to say anything. But people have always complained about the name Game Maker. Besides, before we were going from a meaningless logo to the single most childish thing I have ever seen. Now we're debating on wanting to go from a supposedly childish name to a more 'mature' one. People just want what they think is the best image for their tools.

Even so, I like the name Game Maker. My Computer Science teacher made fun of it once when I told her I used it until I asked her to make some of the things I could. She shut up pretty quickly. ;)

I think it's more an issue of self-image than the image of Game Maker.

This is the internet. If people were worried about that, they would never change anything.

Even so, I like the name Game Maker.

This is all about habits. If the game had been called "Easy Game Creation Tool" in the early days of its development, you would've liked that and would disagree in changing it to "Game Maker".
Anyways, I think "Game Maker" is fine as well - but for those who oppose, I would like to hear your suggestions for a new name :)

I think the Game Maker 8 icon is just fine - though I think the Game Maker 7 icon was a bit more cosy. The GM8 icon looks as something you open "just because I have to" in my opinion. Anyways, when I first started using Game Maker (which was version 7 Lite) 2 years ago - I got a good impression. I was just another teenager who wanted to make games - luckily, I found the easy way. Game Maker was incredibly easy to make games with. After the first 2 weeks, I had already made 2 games. I thought they were the best games ever made back then and they were made with pure D&D.

Aren't that really what Game Maker is all about?
-- Giving people the chance to amuse themselves with their own games, for free.
-- And if you want to get a little more serious with it, you have the opportunity to upgrade to Pro version and get plenty of new features such as 3D.

@NPT I wasn't the only person who didn't like the logo. Funny thing was it was the "professional" people (outside of GMC) who saw it who didn't like it (I hated it too)...so that's why I wanted to make the change. I like the name though, but the problem with it is we tried and failed to get it trademarked. Regardless I don't think we'll ever change the name.

I vote for "Naked Game Toast 9.0" !

Not for self-images reasons, it's just that I like naked. And toast, but naked better.

I like naked and toast too....so I'm inclined to go with NPT's vote, sorry scream. I still think shortening the name would be good

BUT

I would rather the program be fixed first, it is still far too slow, the accessibility to inner functions are impossible, and missing many possibly more useful functions like (just off the top of my head):

angle difference
network protocols
threads

obviously you can have a dll or scripts to it, but having them built-in would be so much better. And don't forget compiling...gotta have that working fully too! (heck, just make it cross-compile into a C++/delphi/whatever language and I'll be happy)

Speed is my only problem as well. If they ever decide to make a compiler, Gamemaker will become much more viable for commercial projects.

Seriously, instead of all this PSP hassle (im pretty sure they're making a compiler for PSP, cant imagine any GM games running on the poor thing with interpretation), they could've made a compiler for the real thing... I'm sure a LOT more people would benefit from that.

But I guess there is an economical issue here.

They already took away the hammer-and-sickle-esque icon, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?! D:<

In all seriousness though, I think the GM name has gotten too big to change: if you change it now, it'll confuse too many people and affect sales (simply because people will have trouble finding/recognizing the program by name alone).

They'd be pretty stupid to first try optimizing GM for usage on the PSP - which is probably needed as you correctly point out - and then not trying to let those optimizations benefit the PC/Mac versions of GM as well. I know YYG has done some questionable things in the past, but they're not stupid.

YYG want GM9 to be unified. So any optimizations done for the PSP will automatically be used for PC and MAC.

Anyway, I don't think they'll be making a GML compiler, but rather use a Java-like form of bytecode (not the primitive kind that GM apperently uses now). This allows for a possible InstantPlay that works on both PC and MAC (as long as the game uses no OS-specific stuff like DLLs and the registry), it is less work than an actual compiler and there will be a considerable speed gain. There are so many other things where speed can be gained than just compiling.

Zeond: Does that little detail really matter? Also you might want to take a look at your own signature before bashing other people's spelling of it.
