Introduction

I am sure that many of you have witnessed the accumulation of games with useless screenshots at YoYo. Not only do they unnecessarily take up large amounts of server space, but they also clutter visual space and set bad examples. Many stuck around under the generous tolerance of YoYo moderators. Until now.

While browsing the main YoYo forums, I noticed this topic by A saurus1, a YoYo moderator. He is mobilizing the YoYo community to help tag these games on July 24-25. So far, the number of volunteers from YoYo is too few to process the 2500+ pages of games in such a short amount of time.

Now that the YoYo moderators have finally decided to crack down on "bad" screenshots, I think it is about time that we lend a hand. This is an excellent opportunity for us to return a favour to YoYo administrators, who have recently taken time to upgrade the GMC. Furthermore, as many of us have our games hosted on YoYo, removing the clutter helps bring them to light.

Will any of us raise our hands and answer the call?

---------------------------------------------------

How the event works

• You, the YoYoGames community, scour the games pages looking for games that need to be removed. You can search for tags that your own games have and find any junk games that those searches return.
• When you find a game that needs handling, go to the game's page and post a comment like "CYG Removal Tagged" This is to let other members know that you've tagged the game for cleanup, so that they don’t report the same game.
• Then, copy and paste the URL of the game into a text file. Please do not report the game through the report system.
• Once you're through, copy and paste the entire contents of the URL text file into a PM, put the number of URL's that you collected in the subject line, and send it to one of the participating mods listed below.
• That's all. You're done, and you can feel good that those games will be cleaned up shortly.

---------------------------------------------------

Regulations

• Before you report a game (I.E. add a CYG removal tagged comment), please refresh the page to make sure someone else hasn't already reported the game while you were waiting.
• You put the number of links you have in the subject line of the PM.
• You must have over 8 links to PM, do not PM only one or two links.
You must report ONLY games with bad screenshots (Please report other offenses through the YoYoGames Report System).
• You must not attack, flame at, or otherwise disturb the creators of the games you report.
• If you wish, you may continue you help clean up YYG after the clean-up day is over.

I would hope if this was supported by YYGs there would be a glog entry.

I'm ambiguous about if this is a good idea or not.

Where is the line drawn between good and poor games, what's to stop malicious marking of moderate or even good games and then accidental deletion. Given the potential for accidental or malicious deletions, something like this needs to be supported from the top.

Yes, this is a potential problem, but I guess that the power to choose will only be given to those that the admin staff have faith in... Which will probably mean that they will be scrutinising all posts made on these forums (as well as any other sources) to see what type of person is applying for the job!

Personally, I think this is a great idea and much needed as currently Yoyo is drowning in sh*t...

So I for one would love to help out!

Sounds like fun. I have already deleted all my games except The Temple and Paraglow 3.

Didn't post the whole process of how to tag a game, but based off of this

Here's how it will work:

Here's what we'll do with your reports:

We'll take the URL's you sent us and go through them as soon as we can, immediately removing any blatantly bad games, and removing the screenshots on the rest, replacing them with our warning screenshot.
• By the next week, we should be able to go back in and remove any that haven't been fixed.

It seems like they'll actually be looking through the requests and not just skimming and deleting.

Yes, this sort of refuse is what they're looking for.

@icicle.flame:

Is this just for games or can we tag forums too?

The purpose of this cleanup targets just the games. Junk at the main YoYo games forum is best dealt with by YoYo moderators and senior members themselves.

Thank you all for your offers to help the YoYo moderators in this cleanup effort. Based on current statistics, approximately 2500 pages of games need to be sorted through by the time the cleanup event starts, which means that at least 50 volunteers are needed. 100 is preferable, but more is better. So spread the word!

The original post will be updated shortly with an excerpt from A saurus1's topic regarding the workings of the cleanup event, as well as userbar codes for those of you who also want to help advertise this event...

Oh man. This isn't going to work. There are so many crappy games that we couldn't possibly get rid of even half of them even if the whole GMC was helping. We are extremely lucky if we can get any games removed faster than new junk is added.

This will also probably cause much dismay among the people whose games will be considered junk. And I can imagine it only takes bad screenshots to get someone consider your game junk. This is so hopeless that I think the only way to clean it up by a considerable amount is to just wipe all the current games and add mod preview for the ones added after that, which itself is a horribly bad idea.

YoYo is 1/2 of pure junk... im not sure wheter this is a good or a crappy idea since the creators of the junky games will complain about their game being removed, and im pretty sure they will upload them again once removed. thus the basic idea is pretty cool... somehow YoYo needs to be cleaned.

What I'm wondering...is this somehow officially supported? It's not on the Glog, to start with. Is there a reason for wanting to "spread the word" yet at the same time not post there? Or even an official topic on the GMC if the Glog has the wrong target audience. I have not seen YoYo officials posting here.

There are so many crappy games

That's the whole reason of the cleanup :P

YoYo is 1/2 of pure junk...

Which means the number of games is halved afterwards (provided the cleanup works out well), which would hopefully give YYG a bit more breathing space. Yep... they do everything to save money (and probably for a good reason).

Anyhow, I sort of agree with Tepi that this is only going to work if afterwards they will have some sort of quality control. Otherwise they'll have to do this every year or so.... However, the lack of a quality control was exactly what made the YYG website have such an "game creation is for everyone" nature.

And I guess now they have to deal with the consequences of this nature...

This will also probably cause much dismay among the people whose games will be considered junk

Yes, people may decide to stop using GM if even the official website doesn't accept their first games...

That's hardly a loss for the quality of games there, but it might mean a loss of future Game Maker sales.

That's an excellent observation. And a wise note of caution.

I could see wanting to clean up the junk that people upload that is just like test games and things that shouldn't be there, but I don't think anyone, especially regular old users, should be trying to distinguish between what is a bad game and what isn't. Besides, how can you be the "YouTube of games" without a bunch of junk? You can't run a website dependent on user-created content and not expect there to be some bad stuff.

I also think the support banners are a bit over the top. If you're going to do that job, then do it. We don't need to create some ridiculous support banner for everything.

If you want to help YYG clean up junk, go through your own games and delete the things that you aren't proud of. After that, just use the rating system to help the good stuff float to the top. Telling other users they aren't good enough is just a bad idea

Not really, it might be a good solution, but that means every single game uploaded must be tested by someone and that someone says wheter the game can be posted... who the hell is someone to tell wheter my game isnt good enough? isnt that the whole point of posting my games? getting feedback from users?

hopefully that little bit of twisted humor makes my point...

I suspect a lot of the targeted content is games uploaded a year or longer ago by people who posted their first tutorial with the tutorial sprites replaced by other resource pack sprites, and then never came back again. They won't come here to remove their own games.

Also, asking people to remove their own games only works with mature people. And it's usually not those people who have posted the really bad games. Asking people to voluntarily delete their least quality games will probably make the average game quality drop, rather than raise.

just use the rating system to help the good stuff float to the top.

I don't think this is a visibility issue - they take a lot of measures already to show the visitor looking for a game, only the best they have. I assume this is more of a storage space problem. Up-rating good games won't help that.

Why not have a passing judgement stage?

Saves a lot of time...

They have 40,000 games over there. Divided by about three years now this is 40 games each day. How is judging 40 games each day, no matter how quickly, going to save time?

Edit: I mean 50,000... but the three years was a guess anyway.

How about two sections to Yoyo? One for games and one for crap. Of course, the issue of sorting still remains. We could ask every user to self-rate a game, but then we would have 'What? But Click the Ghost is an awesome game! What's wrong with you?!' or 'Hell, I'm not proud of it. It may be a super-massive RPG epic with 3D ragdoll physics and ultra-high resolution graphics, but I just don't think it's up to the standard of games like Click the Ghost!' because most of the people on Yoyo are immature, uncourteous, selfish 12-year olds who simply don't have any regard or respect for people who put time and effort into their games, and don't submit until they're confident their game will be well-recieved.

Maybe we could separate it on ratings somehow, like ≥3 stars = game, <3 stars = crap, although then we would have problems with downraters (and upraters). Obviously the crap section wouldn't be called crap, just something like 'Novice Games'.
