Paint.NET is owned by microsoft right...?

Why would Microsoft develop a free alternative to their own paint program?

The answer is in the name. Paint.net was created to promote and demonstrate the .net framework.

No, it wasn't. It was originally created as a project by a student at Washington University.

It is true that one of the lead developers also works for Microsoft, but Paint.NET is not affiliated with Microsoft in any way.
