Bite The Bullet
Genre : Bullet Curtain Shoot Them Up

Bite the bullet is a great shoot them up game. It has taken the control away from the player, no longer can one person take on thousands of enemies easily. No. They must duck and weave through the curtain of spiraling bullets that change direction mid-flight in order to survive. The player has two abilities to help them with this task. The player slowly charges up an energy that they can use to fire bigger and bigger shots to damage the current enemy and a slow-motion ability.
The object of this arcade game is to rack up the highest score possible. While at first this seems as though it would be relatively easy, this is not the case. The first 3 levels are easy enough where the bullet patterns can be avoided by staying in 1 spot and only slightly adjusting your position now and again. However starting from the 4th level the game gets challenging. You need to save up your shots rather than constantly firing like in many shooter games and make your self smaller using the “S” key. From level 20 onwards you are faced with two enemies, when these bullet patterns are combined they are virtually impossible to avoid. Below is me unleashing a powerful attack on an enemy with a quite challenging bullet pattern.

The points you earn for completing a level can range from 0 upwards and depends on how many levels you have been able to complete in a row without being killed. If you are unfortunate enough to be killed the game is not kind about it. Abuse is hurled at the player ranging from the rather mild “Dodge the bullets” to the slightly harsher “Idiot”. Most people can take this with a pinch of salt and take the abuse in the way it is intended. Upon death you are then awarded with a rank(and an achievement relating to that rank if you play the Rocket Game version) which is often insulting on the lower ranks. These ranks can be something such as “Retarded Monkey” or “Awesome Player” if you are good at the game. This can be compared to the Rag-doll Avalanche flash games where the game will often tell you not to play the game with your eyes closed or the developer's granny can play better than you. In both cases this is not actual abuse but a motivational force that encourages you to try harder to get better. In Bite the Bullet this is rewarded by praising ranks.
Bite the Bullet also allows you to map the keys used though I see no reason to change them from the defaults if you are using a QWERTY keyboard but if your not or you don't like the default keys you are able to change them.
The graphical style of Bite the Bullet is nothing particular special it uses maybe 8 colours at most to bring you some rather nice effects and please your eye. In my view this is better than the alternative of having flashy graphics as they would detract from the game-play a little too much unlike the current style which really only shows off the massively entertaining game-play.
If you, by some miracle, get far in the game or get an amazing score you are able to create a replay video. That you can show to friends or just people on the internet. The game comes with a rather mediocre attempt from the games creator but it is a great representation of just how hard the game is. For those of us that are quite competitive there are also high-scores both local and on-line.
In conclusion Bite the Bullet is a stunningly hard game that is able to keep your attention for several days. I first tried it months ago when Rocket Games first came on the scene and played it for a couple days then. I've now rediscovered it and will be playing it for a while again. I suggest you give it a try.
