Adventure Apes and The Mayan Mystery, when described with the utmost simplicity, is an exploration platform game starring a monkey who is equipped with a gun. This review is based on the first part of an on-going series (currently still in development). Yes, technically it's just one level, but this level offers a whole lot of platforming goodness. In the series, you take on the role of Mitch Monkey, and your objective is to recover a stolen artifact from the Mayan Temple. In part one, Mitch must fight his way through hordes of enemies, collect treasures, and gain new abilities to vanquish the Skull Demon (the boss).
The basic gameplay is simple, and plays very clean. You move Mitch by using the arrow keys: right and left keys for side to side movement, up key (or (X) key) to jump, down key (or (Z) key) to compress into a ball (used to access tight spaces). When you acquire a gun, fire it at enemies by pressing the (S) key. If you're running low on ammo, collect some of the colored orbs scattered throughout the game. No ammo left, and you can't seem to find any orbs? No problem, just pick up the nearest miniature block by pressing the (A) key, and hurdle it at the enemy. If you're running low on health, find some green colored orbs to boost your health back up. If you lose all your lives, you are forced to play a fairly useless minigame, and (after completion of the minigame) restart the game.

The game's retro graphics are some of the best I have seen from the game maker world. The graphics are very comfortable, bright, and light-hearted. The percussion driven music gives the game a cheerful beat that you will soon be bobbing your head to. The sound effects are decent, and they definitely give off a retro feel, but I found that some of the sounds contrast negatively with the music. Luckily, music volume can be increased by using the (+) and (-) keys.
