Character Base Templates
for Platformer Games

Chumbuckets has made a very nice, and complete sprite templates, that's one of the best contribution anyone could make for the community. We want Game Maker games to have good graphics... so here is my contribution. These are animated sprite sheets templates, I originally had plans on making from it a sprite generator program (all with clothings, hairstyles, skin color, etc.) but I didn't have much time and enough contributors. So use this as another resource aside from Chumbuckets.

I really don't require that you give me credits (Although I'll appreciate if you do), just finish a game with it. That's all I could ask.

But mainly, I want beginners of GM to use these template as a means of placeholder sprites through their GameMaker learnings, it's really a heart breaking to see a new comer give up on his game developing venture just because he/she has no animated sprites to use (other than those blocks, spheres, and stock sprites that came with GM).

Eventhough I'm currently working on my RPG, you can still suggest another animations you want to be added here, I'll make them if I have free time.

LIST OF ANIMATIONS/POSE:

Crawling (6 frames)
Jumping (4 frames)
Sneaking (6 frames)
Standing (1 frame)
Crouching (1 frame)
Running (6 frames)
Sprinting (8 frames)
Walking (6 frames)
Climbing (6 frames)
Standing with Handgun (2 frames)
Crouching with Handgun (1 frame)
Standing with Rifle (2 frames)
Crouching with Rifle (1 frame)
Running with Pistol (6 frames)
Running with Rifle (6 frames)
Kicking (6 frames)
Throwing (6 frames)
Melee Cut (6 frames)
Melee Thrust (6 frames)

SUGGESTIONS LIST:
1.
2.
3.

Just added new animations... (after long months of inactivity on graphics forum)

Please don't save as JPG. The artifacts ruin this.

The one on the download link is PNG. I'm just kind of interested to see how many will download this.

If I do you will be credited (and depending on sales probably paid)

Thses sprites just fit my game so perfectly

Agreed too but I think that it could use more variations (just saying). Chumbuckets has like a million.

Personally, I find it easier to make a sprite with all details, then animate that, compared to adding all the neccesary details in sereval outlines. I think that could make an interesting discussion - doesn't outlines make you having to draw sereval things more times than you need to? Of course there's copy-paste, but if the appearance of a body part changes too much (like hands usually do during a walk animation), that cannot be used.

But of course, if one can't simply make a animation look natural, an outline is the way to go to get all limbs to the right position. And as well, it might be hard to get the first sprite (the one you animate) to look just right, and then an outline might be extremely helpful. In fact, yesterday I had problems making a sprite for a game, and I had to paste two images to help me design the sprite into the worksheet: the character's face sprite, and a screenshot showing Celes of FF6. It took around 30 minutes to make it look properly... an outline like this would have been much helful.

No disrespect to CB. But......

Chumbuckets Template is....kinda....a little...well just a tad....gahhh....well idk..

In my personal opinion I believe majority of spriters with actual skill wont be using his template just because it wont fulfill their needs xP

His animation library is insane and it being free for the public to use? the man deserves a medal xD
The fact that it was his initial plan/goal to create this for the public makes me wanna give the dude a hug lol xD

But idk
Let's just say once again IMO, CB template could use some work xD

I personally look at teej's template and I'm very satisfied with it ;)
And as far as variation...I can easily make that myself ;D

like I said..."majority of spriters with skill" probably wont use CB template

It looks like the best template ever but I can't seem to download it, my firefox or explorer just freezes.

Anyone with the same problem-o?

EDIT: I just managed to download it.

It looks really awesome and so far one of the best platformer I've ever seen, and believe me, I've seen a lot.
The idea of the pistol and rifle is really cool too, bro. Keep making 'em!

Good, bumping this topic with useful replies is always nice... it gives me some encouragement to expand the animation set more.

I don't know... but I understand that it still require some work to fill details on the outlines, and so is editing an already detailed sprite... but then again its your own preference on how you want to construct the sprite... in analogy, at least when using outlines you got less structures to demolish and get ready for construction right away for the new details. But yeah outlines are mainly used there as guides to both animation and anatomy.

Awesome Teej! Thank you very much for sharing this.

I'd like to politely request a punching animation... Maybe a 3-hit combo if you have the time :P
