ND4SPD, what part of a turn based strategy needs the Pro edition?

And also, do the draw functions in GM8 (like draw_circle) draw anti-aliased/transparent shapes like the circle tool in its sprite editor?

It's not an issue of pro/lite - I only have GM6.1. I can't run GM7 on my computer (it's that old :P) and I assume GM8 would be no different.

Seeing as how there's already a thread, I'm not going to make another one, I'll just Hi-jack this thread.

Since the game's buttons will be limited, I'm going to assume that the game should be playable or doable on a cell-phone. And turning to this, how long do you guys think a cell-phone game would last. Like, how long would you spend on an adventure game, or an arcade game (ping-pong, brick breaker, tetris, etc) using a phone?

@rasudoken: I don't think that's quite an accurate comparison, I mean most phone games are extremely low res and are intended to be played as something to pass the time on a train or something. A handheld console game on the other hand can be as big as the creator wants it to be really, just take Legend of Zelda on the original gameboy for instance, I didn't even finish that game it was so long but I'm sure there were many people who spent great hours finishing that game.

EDIT: @Anyone: What is the deal with GM7/8 only? Do they just hate people like me who don't have an internet connection on their computer or just want to stick to the old versions? I can see no logical reason to place this restriction on the competition.

As stated by NPT:

One of Sandy's intentions is porting to handhelds.

And

I'm guessing if that's the intention then the handheld runner would only support GM7 and GM8 rundatas.

Citation.

Well seeing the limit in controls, most games will either be platformers, puzzles, or adventure games. RTS and RPG games will be difficult but not impossible. The game I'm working happens to be an RPG with a tint of turn-based quality(kinda hard to explain) and the only problems I see are the lack of sound effects, music, and length of the game. The real ideas of this competition are not going to be the genre/type of the game, but how you place what little keys you have available and how far you stretch the space of your resources. The game that uses the best control scheme will be the victor I think.

-Off Topic-
(I have two questions for the competition if anyone can answer them please)
1. I heard that esc can be used to open up a menu from a previous post, does that mean a full menu or just to save/quit?
2. Do the resources have to be fully yours? Or can you use free sound effects found on the internet...

I'm looking to do something that takes the focus away from the limited controls by using some unique graphics and a really atmospheric gameworld. I am heading platformer though (for 1 of my 2 planned games). I think even though there will be lots of platformers, there won't be many good ones, and hopefully I'll stand out =)

My biggest concern is lack of space...music is something I love using, but with an 10MB limit and no dlls to allow for .ogg I'll only be able to fit one or two tracks in.

Either way, I like a challenge and I'm hoping that I am now skilled enough to have a chance (looking back on my entry for comp04, I have progressed so much; I'm looking forward to seeing if it shows ).

1. I'm assuming that Sandy means you can use ESC like it's normally used - to go back to the main menu or to quit. Of course, you may want to have some sort of prompt ("do you want to go back to the main menu?"). As far as I can tell, that is also allowed.
2. You should have rights to the resources you are using, not because they will disqualify you if you don't, but for legal issues. You can use free sound effects on the internet if they are in fact (royalty) free. However, they're not probably not going to disqualify you even if you use copyrighted sounds.

Hey guys, check out all the simple platformers that have been made so far... I'm betting we will get a ton of submissions like this.

I've had a few ideas for special sorts of platformers, but I'm gonna have to keep them secret for now ;)

Well, I've thought of a way, but it would involve so much pausing it couldn't be considered 'real time' at all.

Thank you for your answers. Of course I was going to have the "Do you really want to exit?" prompt and I'm not going to use other peoples sprites, I just don't know how to make my own sounds and music and I can't have a game without any noise...

Google up sfxr, it generates .wav files. (You'll need to convert.) It's perfect for sound effects, but does not do music.

Why are we limited to one other button? I mean, the GameBoy had two buttons didn't it?

The gameboy had four buttons and modern handhelds have like eight or so buttons. We are limited to one because they wanted it so. Deal with it.

Presumably because it is the bare minimum that any handheld is going to have, meaning the game could be universally ported. And I assume it is much easier to add button functions to a game with only one button than it is to start removing buttons etc.

I have an idea already and my game is well underway.
But I don't know if we are allowed to use message boxes. They can be be ended with space,or any other key and the mouse.
If not it will be easy to work around.I'll just use custom message boxes or something like when you press escape the game will pause, and some text will show telling you to press escape again to quit or spacebar to cancel.
My game has a menu and two modes so far.I dunno if it will stand much of a chance though.

Seems that people are more worried about platformers in the competition than I thought.
I've got a pretty unique platformer idea under my sleeve and I've pretty much planned the whole thing.
It'll be a breeze to turn it into a game (got a base engine down already).

Your double tapping is no match for my quadruple tapping.
