So far, its got a few of the actual rooms and a sneak peek at some of the weapons. I will keep uploading major updates until the first boss, then you have to wait for the game to come out.
Controls:
Left and right to move
Down to read signs or open doors
Z to jump/advance text
X to shoot
A and S to switch weapons

Seems good enough. Didn't encounter any bugs, except once a coin bounced up into a wall and seemed to be stuck until I collected it.

Just gotta say that I love the graphics; especially that little smoke effect when your bullet hits a wall. The sounds were nice too.

:unsure: Good start! Keep it up. :rolleyes:

I like it, the physics and sound effects feel good, and the graphics have a nice simple style that I like. Nice parallax background too. I would say work on a better HUD, and more graphics for the environment, like plants, water dripping, etc. Different enemies and obstacles as well, although I understand youre still in development. Whats done so far is flawless in my opinion though.

Edit: Im actually in my first run through cave story at the moment lol. I can see the influence now that I read that part of your topic title. Some advice I can give is, don't be too influenced by Cave Story, try to throw in an original idea or something different from Cavestory if you plan on making a game of its own taste.

@wis3on3:
Yeah, I'll have to fix that.
Thanks!

@guitarman4545:
The HUD is a beta right now.
I will add more variety to the tiles.
I'm adding more useful items than Cavestory has, like a grapplehook, pickaxe, etc.

Update: Dec 7, 2009
-Fixed coin bug (pretty sure)
-Added some tiles
-Coins and hearts disappear after a while
-Shake effect when hit

Update: Dec 8, 2009
-Added a sign that you read

Cool but if im using arrow keys to move, not using the up arrow key to move is a crime.

@razourik:
I'm saving the up arrow key for something else.

First and foremost suggestion from me is to make the background tiles less noisy so they don't attract so much of my attention. Making them darker or less saturated might help with that.

I'm gonna try this out.
I'll edit or post later.

:D

Edit: Its hard! 0_0
Edit2: The main reason it was hard was because its hard to avoid those red things that shoot bullets.. but its much easier to kill the green ones and sometimes you can get health from them.
Good start!

@orange08:
Yeah, it's supposed to be hard. The red enemies won't be this early on in the actual game.

Nice game. I like the graphic style and sound effects. I just didn't really like the music

Pros:
-Fluent controls.
-Good graphic style.
-No hurting-my-eyes colors.
-Sound effects are used quite nicely.
-Nice background
-Creative name
-Runs very smoothly.

Cons:
-Reds are too hard to kill.
-Music gets a little annoying, even tho I don't like it allready :/
-Pretty much the same thing: Walk, kill enemy, walk more... but it's fine I guess.

Total = 7/10 for a WIP.

@Samuka97:
I'm sad that you don't like the music. :huh:
In the real game you will do more than just walk and shoot enemies.

I thought the shooting was too slow at times, and it felt a bit unwieldy. I sort of want to be able to shoot faster if I hit the fire button faster. This combined with the jump mechanic limits where, vertically, I can actually shoot. Also I noticed the bullets don't always travel entirely to the other side of the screen and that felt a bit like a cheat when I was trying to shoot one of those blue things and the bullet just disappeared a couple of pixels away from hitting it. Good game though. I think like a few people I kept trying to jump with the up key too... one of those things you just sort of expect in GM games I guess.
