Exo is a Top Down Shooter - you're a soldier running around a city with your squad, shooting aliens. The aliens are normally small, weak and vulnerable, however, they fight their battles in huge, heavily armoured exoskeletons.

If you play, don't forget to comment - give ideas and critisisms to improve the game!

Comments:
"This is easily the best TDS I have ever played and its still getting better!"
"definately the best TDS I have ever played"
"an amazing game and one of the best top down shooters I have ever seen"
"This was probably the most enjoyable top down shooter I've played from the GMC"
"Game is awesome. *goes and plays a bit more*"
"Great work, ND4SPD!"

Sorry, the .gif filetype makes the screenies look a little off terrible :/ haha

Features:
-Tonnes of effects - muzzle flash, spent bullets, bullet trails, bullet ricochet, blood, parts, explosions, flames, scorch marks, screen shake when taking damage and shooting, weather, shadows, etc
-16 Awesome weapons - 8 primary, 4 secondary and 4 heavy weapons. Secondary weapons are weak, but have infinite ammo. Primary weapons are much stronger, but are limited. Some weapons have a silenced variant - enemies attempt to dodge unsilenced bullets, but silenced ones have reduced damage. You have 2 primary weapons (starts as Assault Rifle and Shotgun) and 1 secondary (starts as Pistol). AND there are heavy weapons - Gatling Gun, Cannon, Heavy Shotgun and Rocket Launcher at your service :P And theres also the vehicles...
-Unique accuracy system - each weapon has 3 accuracy levels. The most accurate is when you are still and aiming, the least when you are moving and not aiming (running), and normal accuracy when not moving and not aiming (standing) or when moving and aiming (walking).
-Enemies/cannon fodder  - 7 types - tiny (small, fast, weak and annoying, with SMG equivalents), bombers (similiar to tiny enemies but they explode when they get to you), drones (normal, with shotgun, rifle or assault rifle equivalents), drone leaders (stronger than drones and dual wield), snipers (weaker drone variant with a sniper rifle), scorchers (another drone variant with a flame thrower), huge (large, turret Exos - can't move but they're very strong)
-Advanced AI - enemies/allies support each other, take cover and dodge bullets! (thanks to turgon's awesome AI engine, heavily modified though, click here (after testing my game haha).
-Achievements - now 3! Executioner (kill 10 downed enemies), Cliff Hanger (recover from near death), Vandal (destroy 10 cars)

Controls:
WASD - Move
R/SHIFT - Roadie run/sprint (hold, you can't perform actions while sprinting)
SPACE - Contextual action (pick up, drop, use, etc)
Q - Switch to left weapon (see below for more info)
E - Switch to right weapon (see below for more info)
Left Mouse Button - Fire your currently armed weapon
Right Mouse Button - Aim (see Features for more info)
ESCAPE - Pause
CONTROL - Take a screenshot

In vehicles, you only need to aim with the mouse and shoot with the Left Mouse Button.
In the menu, you click buttons with the Left Mouse Button.

The currently armed weapon is larger, and its ammo is displayed to the right (as a percentage and as a bar). Your other two weapons are displayed just below - the left one is selected with Q, the right with E.

Note: There is a much more detailed help in the .zip!

Please answer these questions in your post:
  • Any ideas for story and the campaign missions? The basics are there, but I need a full story.
  • Achievement ideas? Names and what you have to do to unlock them.
  • In Survival Mode, there are Air Drops - every 2 waves, a gunship comes in and drops a random something. I need ideas for the somethings - like airstrike, support weapons, new primary/secondary weapons, EMP (deactivates all the Exos in the level temporarily), sentry guns, anti-personnel mines, allies, etc.

OK, enjoy the game!

Awesome game, great stuff.

Decent sprites, decent AI.

Cons: Move a bit slow...I find that a bit annoying. Bullets move a bit slow too. Oh and the maps are a teeny bit plain.

Otherwise, great game!

Great work, ND4SPD!

Comments:
- The special effects were very impressive!
- The enemy variations were good.
- The missions were well laid out.
- I liked the menu set-up.

Suggestions:
- Sound effects!
- The text is kind of hard to read.
- More scenery and terrain types.
- The ability to reload.
- The ability to run/ sprint.

Bugs:
- Something seems glitchy with the weapon cycling.
- Mission 6 doesn't work for some reason; it loads, but there are no enemies.
- You move faster if you go diagonally; the speed should be equal in all directions. (Try using the lengthdir... functions for movement)

Nice job so far! Keep up the good work!

Very nice! It's fun, has great effects, decent sprites, and smooth gameplay. What more could you want? Other than the finished version, of course... It's just a bit hard and I can't seem to find out how much hp I have...

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!

Awesome game, great stuff.
Decent sprites, decent AI.
Cons: Move a bit slow...I find that a bit annoying. Bullets move a bit slow too. Oh and the maps are a teeny bit plain.
Otherwise, great game!

Thanks P00PS! I increased move speed. The bullets are so you have a chance of dodging them. Yeah, I need suggestions for terrains and scenery so it isn't so bland.

Awsome !!!!!

Haha, thanks :P

Nice review  thankyou. Which text was hard to read, and do you have any ideas for terrain/scenery? What was glitchy with the weapon cycling? In the interest of simplicity, I didn't put in reload. And for running, I didn't put that in either otherwise people would always sprint (and it would be more controls to remember) HOWEVER how about you press a button and you can roadie run (like in GOW - you run really fast but you can't shoot)? Anyway, I upped the movement speed a bit in this update. Thanks for spotting those bugs - both were fixed in the update. Thanks again turgon!

Thanks for the positives. Haha :P your HP is displayed as redness on the screen. But I suppose I could make a health bar if people want.

Thanks Jakyl, I downloaded that about an hour ago haha :( It now works on Vista!

How was gameplay? Graphics? Should I include grenades, vehicles and support weapons? Have ideas for achievements? Enemies? Bosses? Mission types? Ideas for scenery/terrain to make the city less bland? Can you help with sounds?
And how should I structure the mission menu? I was thinking of a map of the world, with all the missions dotted across...

I love the HUD and the special effects. They were very nice. The only things is the different weapons and gfx. When I had a SMG I shot three bullets at a time like it was a shot-gun. The gfx need to be spruced up a little, but overall it was awesome. Definitely a crowd pleaser.

You want suggestions? I'm not entirely sure of what you mean by support weapons, but I think this'd be a great game to make in Counter Strike: Condition Zero (Deleted Scenes) style. Like, you've got the basic kill-anything-that-moves levels, but also have slightly different kill-anything-that moves levels. For example, on CS CZ DS, there is a level where you are on the back of a truck with a moutned gatling gun and have to take out lots of baddies. For sounds, I'd reccomend findsounds.com, then edit them with Audacity. Grenades would be cool, especially if you made them useful for throwing around corners etc., so you aren't forced to engage enemies directly when they have massive weapons and you're stuck with a pistol. Achievments? Umm, things like getting 20 kills in 10 seconds, completeing the game on "hard" or something... I'm sure I'll come up with more later on :P

And how should I structure the mission menu? I was thinking of a map of the world, with all the missions dotted across...

Yeah, that's exactly what I had in mind when I saw the menu. I'd like to see this...

Anyways, now I've gotta test your new release!

EDIT: Alrighty then, i think i see what you meant by health. So, when your screen is noermal again your health is back to full? If so, then keep it the way it is, you don't need a healthbar. Umm... forgot what else I was gonna say... Oh yeah! I think there should be a mission description when you select the mission, and make it a bit more obvious that you've selected it (say, a beeping noise).

Thanks for the positive review. I dunno what's happening with the SMG. It fires REALLY fast. Maybe you were using the Rapid-fire Shotgun?

Sweet. I love all the ideas. By support weapons, big ones you pick up (contextual action button strikes back haha), like Chain Guns (rapid fire, rips enemies apart), RPG Launcher (for explosions muahahahahahahaa) and a Heavy Rifle (fires a single extremely high damage round that penetrates multiple enemies).

Grenades would be explosive, but maybe other types? I dunno. Having just explosive grenades would be simpler.

Yeah, that's a mad idea. On a truck. I have a tank set up. There could be missions where you just roll through town on a tank and blow s*** up, and others with a fast moving Rapid Assault Vehicle (TM haha :( a jeep with mounted machine gun pretty much). And a mission with a helicopter gunship :P. I already have graphics for the tank and gunship.

Good ideas for achievements!

Ah, support weapons sound great, you seem to have your ideas pretty sussed. How about grenade launchers (so it's liek a rocket launcher, but bounces and has a fuse rather than explodes on contact with a wall), maybe a laser of some description? And a flamethrower! Have them rare, and like, make the pick-ups all shiny so you know they're special OR I JUST HAD A BRAINWAVE! Make it you can unlock them by gaining acheivments? Like, you'd get 10 points for an easy acheivment, 20 for a moderately difficult, and 40 for a hard one? THen you could spend the points in a shop for perks and new weapons... I think that'd be pretty cool!

Oh, be sure to read the edit in my last post...

i like it, nice feel to it
only things i could suggest are
  • alien weapons, used by the aliens, droppable by aliens, pick-upable by player
  • bug fixes, take a relook at your gun swapping, i think something wrong happens there
  • sound, i didnt hear any...
  • a slightly higher moving speed
  • polishing of the graphics(shading, detail, variation)
  • finish up the menu, improve the HUD
  • faster bullets
  • tweaked ai
  • better alien placement system(not have them always standing guard at room creation, maybe make some come from a place)
  • other places to take cover besides cars
  • and larger, more diverse levels

You said "Great graphics + sound!" Which is praising the graphics and the sound. There is no sound. Hence it sounds sarcastic.
