There are too much topics in this forum that are sought to be garbage. Good games are what matters before all; since this forum isn't much of a societal community but of programmers and a community, sharing programming knowledge.

That doesn't make much sense as a sentence in English, but if you're suggesting that we stop discussing something about the community here in the community forum, then I'd have to disagree with you...

True, a ranking system can lead to useless posts or pointless pride. This Community is good as it is. I don't say that it is a bad idea. Just saying that it can possibly lead to something wrong.

I'd say that about sums up everything. Who's up for some cake? :P

You've proven me: wrong. excuse me, I meant 'social' instead of 'societal'.

I was being sarcastic with the quoting...Apparently smilies are needed. If any of you have read the quoting topic, then you'd have known what I was referring too. I was simply stating that some systems, like postcount aren't really needed, and could be removed. I don't want it to be or am suggesting it, I am simply saying there are other things that could be removed from the forum, instead of added. Like member ranks.

I agree with what was suggested a few pages back:

Have the staff individually choose members they feel worthy and they can have a rank of something like "Advanced User" or something along those lines. Oh, and if members ask for that rank, they should get some warning percentage added on. :medieval:

What if we (The Staff) don't think anyone is worthy enough?

Oh, and if members ask for that rank, they should get some warning percentage added on. :medieval:

A little harsh don't you think? Increasing a users WARN by 20% each time they ask to become some user rank isn't a practical idea, I wouldn't have a problem doing it, but too many people would be punished over something that can be ignored very easily. I think a more fair punishment would be to never let them become an "Advance User". By saying that, I'm not agreeing to change/implement member ranks, I'm just saying, that if you want to come up with punishments/suggestions, maybe try to think of something other then "Ban them!!".

I still stick with what I said before, having member ranks could be a bad idea, it would just create another way for members to feel superior to others.

This Community is good as it is.

Ah that made me laugh, we have our share of problems :) (no offense intended).

And yes, this could lead to a bunch of pointless duplicate accounts, members only pretending to be helpful so they could get the rank, so on so forth. Basically it sounds like a load of trouble :medieval: .

A terrible idea. Moderators can't follow thousands of active members, and decide case-by-case who's "advanced". It's impractical. And unless we consider all members, it's not fair.

What does "advanced" even mean? Understands all areas of GML? Or very skilled in some areas? Capable of posting in the Advanced forum? Anybody can do that if they try just a little.

I'm willing to bet people wouldn't agree on a definition when applied to members. And moderators wouldn't either.

Or is this just for special members the moderators like? If so, what's the benefit for regular members? Just something else to complain about?

So no.

That would be a waste of time... they already have to choose the next moderators and admins from the members they think are most active/helpful/whatever.

I don't think it would be a waste of time. This way every single person will get their well deserved ranking underneath their username. How can you say that's a waste of time? :)

We have 86176 registered members

And 25 active Staff Members, to top all of that off, not every Staff members comes to the GMC Daily. OK, so maybe the helpful members are really noticeable, but if we were to consider every member (like you said) and judge them if they are worthy or not seems a little pointless, not to mention impractical, especially when all they are getting is a little title below there name.

What would the benefits be from having the title "Advance user", bragging rights?

From KC LC a few posts above this one:

Might I add to that: I am sure you (someone in the community) has accused the staff of favoritism at some point, how would this not be favoritism?

I also think that ranks are quite pointless for this forum too. These forums are to provide users with help and support for working in Game Maker and to distribute art and games. There are other related forums that have this system besides this one. The only one thing I never liked about this forum is not being allowed to discuss other programming languages besides GML (specifically in a GM community environment) which means lack of extension developers, but that's another topic.

I usually figure out if a person is knowledgeable at GM by their signature portfolio. I don't have one because I naturally do not work for long periods of time constantly so my games are "near finished" or not at all. But I know how to make a video game like many people here, so I don't judge this way. But if I see someone with nice game examples, I know if they are "advanced" or not.

Ranks based on post count will just encourage spamming.

Why not have a reputation system added instead, so you can tell who contributes to the community and who just trolls the forums?

Why do you need a reputation system?

Read peoples posts.

It doesn't take long before you know who's got it going and who doesn't.

Exactly. I like to use the classroom analogy. Remember when a new semester starts, and you have a class full of total strangers? But after a few weeks of classroom discussion, everybody knows who's smart, who's funny, and who's an idiot. EVERYBODY knows.

And nobody needs to wear a "sign" on their head announcing it.

Did you really think anyone would think viewing 86k members individually was practical?!

I just wished this topic was closed. The original post was already answered and all this is doing is sparking interest for useless ideas.

Well, it's hard to convey sarcasm, without risk of someone taking you literally. Maybe you should have used the "tongue in cheek" smiley instead: :) Smiley choice is critical here. ;)

Sorry. I'm afraid members will just have to control themselves, instead of relying on moderators to do it for them. If members have no good ideas, then they should restrain themselves from posting just because the topic is open.

Besides, someone might still come up with useful ideas. I have a few ideas myself, for custom titles granted for "extraordinary" behavior. Such titles might be given temporarily to certain members, to acknowledge that behavior. But I'm still mulling over the idea.

Great, here's some suggestions:

  • Went two posts in a row, without saying something idiotic.
  • Is finally able to contain the puddle of drool under their keyboard.
  • Finally, gets the concept that socks are supposed to match.
  • Member since April 5, 2008, and finally said something useful.
  • Proof that even morons can use Game Maker.
  • Member rank: Member RANK!
  • If only this member's Mother had said "No", at prom night.

Let me know when I can start nominating people.

I've got....most of them down. My socks never match. :)

Really, so many members in the community already act superior to everyone else; why rank them and give them an extra reason to do so? A rewards system *might* work but then you've got complaints from the other end of the spectrum.
