What is Lord of the Smash?

Lord of the Smash is a PC game based off two entirely different worlds. Lord of the Rings and Super Smash Brothers. It is made in the program Game Maker as a solo project with graphics based off a DragonballZ gameboy game. The Website is coming soon that will tell you all the characters and their special abilities.

What is the Beta?

The Beta is testing for Balance, Gameplay, and Bugs. It is also for getting ideas. The Beta has all the characters (including the 6 unlockables) so if you like surprises then please wait to play the full version in a month or so. The Beta right now is missing Single Player where you fight against Evil Enemies from the Lord of the Rings Series. The Beta will be updated over the next few weeks with whatever I do, including CPU difficulty, many more stages, and more.

How can I help?

Well i need many things. I need you to list all bugs that you run into.
Some known bugs are:
-Oddly Falling through the level and not being able to respawn. (If this happens press \'P\' and Backspace to end the match)
-CPUs walking in place and acting funny.
-Not being able to rush attack up slopes.

The other big thing I need help with is balance. If you have a friend around sometime, give the game a whirl with 1v1s and Free-for-alls with the computer and make a tier list explaining your placement.

Also for the entire development process I will be giving credit to people in the game for making a tier list in a special tier list part of the in-game credits. A tier list is a list of the characters in the order they are good at this game haha.
Here are the requirements.

1.) The Tier list should take into account both 1v1 and Free-for-Alls(FFAs) as Lord of the Smash is a party game.
2.) If you make the same exact order as mine then you better have damn good reasoning or it won\'t count.
3.) If you don\'t give atleast one sentence per each character it won\'t count.
4.) It must include all 12 characters.

I hope I get to see some of you in the credits!



Example Tier List for Beta v3.0

Top Tier

Legolas
Legolas is the Metaknight of the Lord of the Smash right now. He is fast, has good hit boxes, and has more options then most players. His air combos do low damage but are very repeatable, making him a force in 1v1s. His charged Arrows and Down shooting ability also make him one of the best in FFAs.

High Elf
High Elf absolutely destroys on some levels. His up attack is probably the best in the game. His standing attack has 0 start up or ending lag and he combos on the ground very well. That being said, the High Elf cannot kill easily on levels like Helms Deep and the Shire and he matches up with the rest of the cast much more on those levels. His boomerang Spear is good, but not overpowered.

Gimli
Gimli is the Range monster in Lord of the Smash. He can get to you relatively quick right now and his axe stretches further than almost every attack. All his moves are good and he should only receive a slight nerf before the end. However, if you keep him at a far range, his usability fades.

Ent Child
Ent Child is possibly overpowered right now in 1v1s. His wrap to standing attack combo make him too good especially against CPUs. His leaves also help out his FFA ability. However, he is big and his aerial hit boxes are not as good as many characters placing him at the bottom of top tier.

Mid Tier

Aragorn
Aragorn is so close to top tier. His Up attack is the best vs CPUs and really makes him a force in FFAs. His charge attack hits behind him and in front of him for solid mind games. He also has a decent rush attack. However, he can be beaten 1v1 by a smart player. He is middle of the cast material.

Gandalf
Gandalf is a great fun character. Put him in the hands of a good player and he is easily top tier. However, his air hit boxes aren\'t the best, and his range is slightly lacking. Gandalf is fun to play and a little difficult to get used to, but he is definitely at a good balance state right now.

Gondor Warrior
Gondor Warrior is as middle of the pack as you can get. He has good air combos, great range on all attacks, and decent damage. His range attack is lacking to balance this and he can be beaten by tricking characters. He is well balanced as of now.

Hobbit
Hobbit is a fun character as well. All his moves have low range and high damage with the exception of his up attack. His special can change the game if used well and his size makes him a hard target to hit. This character can easily destroy FFAs simply with his up attack.

Low Tier

Gondor Ranger
Gondor Ranger might be Top Tier in 1v1s, especially on certain levels like Weathertop. His special ability to avoid range is pretty beastly. However, his terrible standing and up attack need to be redone to make him enjoyable. This character could easily be overpowered if done incorrectly.

Eowyn
Eowyn is probably the most annoying FFA character. She can attack and then run away and heal. Against CPUs she is unbeatable, but in a 4 person battle (BUY USB CONTROLLERS!!!) she is fairly balanced. She needs something else special about her to be mid tier.

Rohirrim
Rohirrim could be very good, I\'m not too sure haha. His shield makes projectiles do 8+ damage back and it is lagless. However, he can not kill near edges due to his lack of a projectile. He has great range on his attacks and good damage. He also needs something else special to be Mid/High Tier.

Lothlorien Elf
Loth Elf can aim his spears. Awesome. However they are still hard to get to hit. He also has the worst aerials in the game. His standing attack is beastly but he needs some kind of unique attack to make him a fun playable character.

What are you working on now?

Well other than the specials, there are alot of character things that need to be tweaked.
Some Animations / Moves I am reworking
1.) Gandalf Air Attack - Changing it to be a teleport like Zelda\'s where there is an explosion at the end that does damage.
2.) Lothlorien Elf - Standing Attack. New Animation with alot more range.
3.) Lothlorien Elf - Up Air attack. New Animation
4.) Gondor Ranger - Up and Down Air Animations (Maybe even whole character redone / changed into something else haha)
5.) Legolas - Down Air attack - Needs some tweaking.
6.) Eowyn - Rush Attack needs to be more interesting haha
7.) Rohirrim - Up or Down attack changed to give the character some more playability.
Let me know if you absolutely hate any animations.

How do i play?

Well there are 4 availabe slots where all of them can be CPUs so its fun just to fight as yourself. But the game really shines with friends. If you have a USB controller go dig it out of your basement or closet and plug it in because with the Joy2Key application that comes in the Zip file you can have 4 people playing at once (with two controllers.) I even including a controller scheme so you can jump right in. Plug in the controller first, then load up JoyToKey.

Player 1
Move: Arrow Keys
Attack: Control
Shoot: Shift

Player 2
Move: WASD
Attack: F
Shoot: R

Player 3 (Use JoytoKey)
Move: Y(Up) G(LEft)H(Right) B(Down)
Attack: U
Shoot: T

Player 4 (Use JoytoKey)
Move: I(Up) J(LEft)K(Right) M(Down)
Attack: L
Shoot: O

i like the idea of lord of the rings and smash bros.
there are a few bugs the enemy cant go up the stairs on stage one , you might want to think of people that have stick keys when pressing shift , nice graphics 4/5 , gameplay 3/5 ,story n/a.

Haha, yep, i see you have been around here for a while too =). The game is pretty much recoded (some similar ideas/movement codes)

I'm actually working on getting the next Beta out in a few days. It will have
Sound Effects - Done
Music - Done
CPU Levls - Done
A couple more stages
A few new animations
A Front Menu Screen

Okai,some ideas:
Sauron:Unlockable,you decide how
Powah Movez:Normal Attack:He uses his mace to deal Devastating damage with Devastating comboes
Up+B:Rising Darkness:Sauron Spins his devastating mace while rising up in air,and then he can make a devastating smash with his Down+B
Down+B:Dark Healing:Sauron makes a little powerup thingy to heal himself,AS LONG as there are victims to suck souls of..
Normal B[Charge Attack]:Soul Collector:Sauron charges up and concentrates his power in order to deal TRULY DEVASTATING DAMAGE on one foe,and eventually the foe might lose his soul..
Up+A:Uppercut:Sauron uses his mace to send his foes in air to make more comboes..Uhhh,just your standard uppercut!
Down+A:Power Smash:Sauron smashes ground and pushes foes away
A Smash:Soul Dash:Sauron uses his soul to create a fake Sauron and sends him forward and pushes foes away

Really liked the idea of this game as i am a fan of both LOTR and SB.

You could also include a single player mode (like in Smash Bros Melee).

I will try to come up with some special move ideas, and post here when I have some.

I was thinking about making one or two OP characters that you could only use against CPUs in multiplayer. After I sprite Sauron as an enemy, he could very well be an option haha. And maybe Gandalf the White / Galadriel for the other option.

But then again, i have a long way to go before i can think of adding more characters.

Haha yes its a Game Maker game. GM7 Pro to be exact while the first engine was Game Maker 5.

Somebody please make me a tier list (list of characters in order of power) of all the characters, i need some testers that are outside of my influence. Just play 1v1 vs your friend or brother or something, use WASD for player 2!

It was a fun game, but there isn't much to balance, since everythings the same. I'd suggest making it so all the attacks arent the same. Maybe for like legolas, you could do double arrows for the forward attack.etc Just different things, so its not just forward dash, slice down, spin up, and slash + a projectile. Gandalf has something a bit different, but it does pretty much the same thing.

Ahh sorry if I didn't make it more clear:

All the characters with the exception of 3-
Gimli
Gondor Warrior
High Elf

All have special abilities, ranging from gandalf's specials which are the up and down air attacks to legolas who can charge his arrow to increase damage and speed.
Some characters have specials that are harder to find, try pressing down+shoot with

Eowyn
Hobbit
Gondor Ranger


Let me know if you can't find the other characters'
Also, try playing high elf and then try playing lothlorien elf and you can tell the difference between the hitboxes and balance haha.

Also, I've been pretty busy finishing up some projects for my summer term at school, but I am still working on getting Beta v3 around the end of August.

Beta v3 hopes to be a pretty big addition featuring:

--Stages--
The Shire
The Tower of Orthanc (Done)
Amon Hen

Also the beginning of Single Player will be added (with the option for a friend to join for Co-Op arcade mode.) In the Single Player mode you will be facing evil enemies from the Lord of the Rings Series.

--Single Player Matches---
Farmer Maggot (Sprites Done) - The Shire
Ringwraiths (Sprites Done for now, need to be redone later) - Weathertop
Moria Orc Team - Moria Stairs
Lurtz (Sprites Done) - Amon Hen
Uruk Hai (Sprites Done) - Helm's Deep
Saruman (Sprites Done) - Tower of Orthanc
Haradrim (Sprites Done) and Easterling (Not Done) - Pelennor Fields

More Single Player matches will be added in later Betas including matches against the Cave Troll, Gollum, The Witch King, and even Sauron (as the final match).

Also Beta v3 will be fixing some animations

I still need ideas for specials for Gondor Warrior and Gimli so if you have any let me know. High Elf will stay special less because he rocks so hard.

I had high hopes for this game, being a large fan of both lord of the rings and super smash brothers, but i was dissapointed in the lack of ability that was granted to the player whilst playing the game. Could be great but just keep trying and with alot of hard work and some polish i could see myself playing this again.

I have some ideas for this game,
The first is probably easier to do. Remember the giant Eagle that Gandolf rides(I don't know the name of it) well you could enter it into the game in the same way they had the Dragoon glider in SMBB. Make three items drop one after the other something like the beak, the tail feather's, and a wing or something. Then when you get all three you pick a height on the screen then the bird moves horizontally across the screen at that height hurting all it hits.

Second idea which is harder, this is the deadliest item the the game, and a double edge sword. The one ring makes the user invunerable to other players attacks but summons wringwraiths on the the stag, that go barreling after the ring holder hurting him badly, and hurts(not as badly) any other player they collide with.

What do you guys think? Keep in mind that was just a rough explanation.

Not really a very useful reply actually. Rating a WIP out of 5 isn't that great as it is a WIP and many of the features are not available yet. Also "the lack of ability that was granted to the player whilst playing the game" doesn't really tell me why you didn't like it or how I could make it better. If you do play again then I would love to see your comments if you could keep them a lot less vague and more constructive.

Not too sure about the Eagle idea as originally I did not want to have items in this game, but the Ring idea is definitely one of the best I have heard on the GMC. I originally was going to make a ring that floats around and activates each character's special but then Brawl was announced and Smash Balls were introduced and I decided that the idea wouldn't be as good if it had been done before. However, making a ring that could be turned on or off could make multiplayer really fun and interesting. How would the ringwraiths respond to attacks? Could they be killed or would they go away after a certain time? Also when would the invulnerability go away? Cool idea though. Keep them coming!

This looks like it's going to be a really good game. Great idea using lord of the rings! I hope to see more of this and maybe an online mode.
