but when I script, I can use " normally, so it must know what I mean when I use it.
How are you using '' in your scripts? Explain?
I had this problem yesterday on my new vista machine.
Right click Gamemaker and click "Run as administrator"

Check the "Run this application in as administrator" checkbox, In the compatibility tab.
The " symbol is used to mark a string in gml, but the error doesn't have anything with that to do.

To clarify, it's using the " character as quotes. It's like saying:I can use " normally

And of course, you can't set data for nothing. No wonder it failed

In case anyone is still having this issue...no, FORCE gm to ALWAYS run as administrator, I forget how, but thats what I did, and I havn't had a problem since.

Also, I do believe I seen somewhere on this forum another way around this issue. Although, that was ages ago.

You really have no clue what UAC's purpose is, do you?Or turn of UAC which was probably added by microsoft as a cursory annoyance to vista.

It monitors any program or other file that is run and makes you confirm every action you take, even simple ones like opening a settings menu. It is completely unnecessary unless your computer is being used by a clueless child; and as long as you scan downloaded files with anti-virus there's no reason to have it on at all.You really have no clue what UAC's purpose is, do you?
You even have to confirm something as simple as deleting a file after you have already confirmed you want through the normal dialog box!

Install Ubuntu. Go to one of the settings panels (for example, Administration -> Synaptic) and see what happens - it asks you for your password to elevate the user's rights. Doesn't this sound familiar compared to Vista? It monitors any program or other file that is run and makes you confirm every action you take, even simple ones like opening a settings menu.
You're just far too used to running as Windows's equivalent of root to realize why UAC exists.
Just because your AV thinks that the file is OK doesn't mean that it can't be malicious.and as long as you scan downloaded files with anti-virus there's no reason to have it on at all.
While Vista's implementation of UAC is, IMO, far too strict, you still fail to see the purpose. You even have to confirm something as simple as deleting a file after you have already confirmed you want through the normal dialog box!

Moderator Edit: I've removed six posts that had NOTHING to do with GM or the GMC. If you want to discuss the merits of the UAC, do it on a Vista forum.

that's all it says, then starts fine... As far as I can tell It is not effecting anything, but is rather odd. Any help on why this happens or how to solve it?
