I have a sprite that has a white background to it, because I used paint to make it, any ideas on how to remove the white, or make it where the white just isn't showing would be great.

There should be a transparency option in the sprite editor...

Also, keep in mind, Game Maker chooses the RGB color in the bottom left corner of the sprite as the background color, so make sure you use a background color that won't make anything on the actual sprite disappear.

Everytime I change the background color, it goes back to grey and I make sure I hit the green checkmark, and not the red x on the corner.

Grey in the preview? The preset backround for the preview is grey. Try checking the backround of the sprite in a room, or try testing the game.
