It's a no fuss, fast, straight to the point performance test with the most common methods in GM I have used.

The source is included so if you have other tests you want to add, It should be easy for you to do so. Please share your results and your test ideas/mods if you have any.

And you don't need a screen shot, it's just a window with test sprites, nothing to impress visually, just performance tests, it will take you longer to ask for a screen shot than try out the gm6 file.

% is the game stress... When it reaches below 30FPS (Above 100% stressed), the result is sent to the clipboard along with the instance count

You can press F4 to perform the tests in full screen. Just be quick about pressing it when the test starts.

Also, you could add 3D performance testing. I made a simple benchmark where it creates an object with a simple 3D model. Maybe that would be good.

EDIT: Another good thing about the performance app, its not a executable so i can download it in a second. Maybe all gm things should be like this.

That is interesting...During the test the % values hung around 60% and now it shows them all around 120%


it was 60% "CPU Usage" (roughly described) until it finaly gave in, that's when I stop and log. You do not get the chance to see the step when the increase in CPU goes beyond 100%. Since I add 100 instances per step, I can break the cammel's back in one step.

Holy crap, just looked at that laptop, the alienware m17, that's... More room than I thought could fit inside a laptop... Full terabyte man... I could store so many movies... Now I want one! Anyway enough ranting.

Hmm seems like my computer doesn't compare too badly. I should run the test again with my oc'ing settings.
OS: Windows 7 Pre Beta 6801
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66ghz
Gfx: Gigabyte/Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT Pre-OC'd to 700Mhz (1GB GDDR3) ( I get it to a bit over 800Mhz with my own non factory OC'ing)

It is interesting to see the comparison with the first few sets of tests on slower machines vs the last few sets on faster machines. I would have assumed that a faster PC would do better in more areas, however I seem to only do well in the last few sets of tests.

Not many drastic changes (if any) have been made to graphic cards regarding the functions GM uses. So the main speed increases will be related the CPU...

Some of you guys seem to have quite high percentages. That could be a sign that the system is struggling to keep the fps even, but lower percentages mean that the fps has been steady and just under the 30 limit.

Well maybe thats just the benefits of quad core. Other programs aren't suddenly taking the processor time out of the benchmark program or something...

Oddly enough, I have no difference with Balance and High Performance (Laptop). But from power saver to balance, it's another story. It may be your settings for balance in your video card properties is set to less than optimal.

On my laptop, High Perf and Balance is the same... But I would venture a guess that for desktops, things should be different
My assumptions on these power settings
Power saver... Slow (for minimal work I can watch movies on this setting and browse the web or play old games) Computer cools down, cooler than normal temp without much help from cooling fans
Balanced... Fast (for work, decent games), stays in normal temperature without much help from the cooling fans (on low)
High Perf... Fastest (for hard core games), work at the limit of speed, and the upper limit for temp. Overheats without cooling fans (on high)...

Mine was jumping around alot. It would flutter between 45-93%, and not in that range, between those two numbers. Never saw a 50, 60, 70, or 80. And for the most part it just hovered at approx. 92%

From what I see from other users here I'm not disappointed. My machine is 5-6 years old: 2.4GHZ P4, 1.5GB ram. Although I did inherit an ATI Radeon 9550 that wasn't compatible with a friends machine, so that might be helping a bit.

It's because your PC has difficulty keeping up from the start. Every time I add 10 instance it hics up, like swallowing a big piece of food. However, once swallowed, it recuperates... If you get my analogy.

The percent represents more the cpu stuggle than percent done... at 100% it's running at 30 FPS. the limit of the test. So My guess is that your PC cant run a blank room game at say 4000 FPS... at 1% it would be running close to 9000 FPS....

Your memory is possibly low (used by other prcesses maybe)...

*shrug* I'd point the finger more at my MBoard/CPU speed. But memory is a possibility. Like I said I closed down all other programs, so there should have been few-no other non-necessary processes running.

And yeah, I dont think I can even run an empty room at 1K, let alone 9.

I feel for you, my old system was very similar spec to this. 2.0Ghz AMD Athlon, 2.5GB DDR 400. It did well for its time, but upgrading was a godsend ^_^

I just thought that I would take a look at my power settings in Windows 7 just to see if it makes much difference. I wasn't expecting much to change as everything basically runs how I want it to anyway, I thought I may have missed something in my Custom settings. I retested to see the results.

As you can see there was not a great deal of change, I assume that there is little that is changed in Windows 7 Balanced and Windows 7 High Performance Mode. Not to mention this is a desktop and not a Laptop.

This test took so long during the tiles in and out of view that i eventually just let it run in the background for a while...

Hmm... i seem to be able to draw 5 times more tiles then most other people. i guess that would make sense since i have fairly new parts. This worries me a little that no one will be able to run any games i make on my computer : ( i better test on some other machines...

Before i built my computer i also had an alienware laptop (its fours years old now, and slowly dying) and for a long time i couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run games at a smooth 60 fps anymore. I was getting 20-30 where i should have got a seamless 60. it turned out that the power save settings were on, and after i turned them off, i was able to play again. long story short, on platforms with a limited powersupply, it makes a huge difference whether power-save is on or off. unplugged, my laptop cannot run for more then 30 minutes while idling... i thought that was bad until i saw my friends laptop.... it can barely bootup and and log on before running out of batteries. I wish batteries didn't wear out over the years ;)

(aslo, the settings on my graphics driver made a big difference too. if you have them all on super high quality, and then in game have them all high quality it will run slow. My solution to this was to set all my driver settings at medium, and then leave the in-game settings on high. I couldn't tell the graphical difference, but it ran smoothly once again.)

Yeah, power saver mode really kills... Fortunaly for me power saver mode is equivalent to a semi-decent mid range PC (ALienware lap top as well) and High perf rocks...

TIP: when you program and test your game, run it in power saver mode so you have an idea if it will run on most PCs

ANyways, I was wondering why the CPU usage would jump between around 42% and 93%. It would do this as soon as the instances were above 1000. But I thought it was strange that the usage would go back down. Perhaps the instance_creation code itself uses enough cpu to make it jump that much?

edit: yeah. forgot my other core.. uhh. fail =P

There seems to be limit to the amount of resources a GM program can actually use and/or this program does not sufficiently test PC performance. CPU never went above 12% usage, and only on a single thread. RAM peaked at less than 25 MB.

You got 4 cores, at worst CPU would be 25%. But I think the raw amount of memory does help... 8 thread... emulating 8 cores... so yeah 12% does make sense

See if you can update your video driver. This should be greater than instances in view


Maybe thats because I was using the Intel i7 SB IGP, which has the latest drivers but I think you meant the Nvidia one, which also has the latest drivers :).
I'll try again tomorrow using the Nvidia card.
