?

You asked me why I said that tattoos are associated with violence. I didnt say that everyone with a tattoo is a prisoner but that is one reason that people make the association.

I have tattoos and am not a criminal. Unless it is against the law to look this good.

On June 25, 2003, two American step brothers...

In December 2007, 17-year-old Lamar Roberts and 16-year-old Heather Trujillo...

In June 2008, four teens allegedly...

On April 14, 2009, 9-year-old Damori Miles...

The Grand Theft Auto series alone sold 120 million copies. Probably twice that number play it. Even if there was a "cause and effect", wouldn't you expect more violence?

4-5 cases out of 120 million sales isn't statistically significant. Your own numbers prove you're wrong.

If Video Games are so bad, than i guess Watching TV is bad too.

They actually really used to say TV was EXTEMELY BAD FOR TODAYS YOUTH AND ITS A BIG MASSIVE DISTRACTION AND ITS SOOOO TERRIBLE. But then.... Gaming happened.

And then the big fat soccer moms in charge of the "YOUTHS TODAY" industry went "OH MY GOD WE CAN'T BLAME TV ANYMORE!!!" and just started blaming games instead.

Those were funny days. I love Soccer Mom's. Just can't get there fact's correct. =p

twelveways: Of course they blamed something else. All humans do that. No human wants to feel that it was their own fault. If I had killed someone, I would've blamed the Saw movies, Grand Theft Auto, and the song Piggies by The Beatles(like Charles Manson did), just to deemed physically ill, and get a milder sentence.

I just realized that I play games, watch violent movies and pornography, have experimented with drugs, drink alcohol... Brb, I gotta kill someone.

One important question, at least here on the GMC... Making games as opposed to playing them. Do you get violent if you make games? (Well, I don't expect you to say "yes" on this :P)

This topic makes me wonder if any mental activity can raise, or lower, intelligence. Mental activity can improve functions like visual processing and reflexes. And it can reinforce one's ability to recognize patterns.

But are any of these related to our innate intelligence?

I'd say that the FF2 rule goes here: if you do something, you get better at that thing. If you don't do something, you slowly decay on doing it.

Playing video games makes you better at playing video games; all sub-"playing" stuff as hand-to-eye coordination and cause-n-effect planning simply gets experience and training. So different games have different effects. And casual games has no effect.

I think you mean casual gaming has no effect, casual games can still be as involved as othe games.

I think you mean casual gaming has no effect, casual games can still be as involved as other games.

Not sure I understand either statement.

What exactly are "casual" games? And "casual gaming"?

I play lots of Flash games -- mostly physics-based puzzle games. Are those considered casual games?

Don't say that. Both the PS3 and the 360 have excellent games that make them worth it.

I only read the first page; but if video games dropped your intelligence; why do they make educational games? Would that balance it? Or are they wasting their time?

Obviously, not. A game won't make you anymore stupid. It'll shape your personality. If you play nothing but WoW or RS, day in, day out. Your life will start to revolve around (not to mention you'll probably never get a bf/gf).

If you play Halo or CoD day in, day out. You'll generally become more violent, simply because your brain is accepting what you see as the normal.

However, how games affect the brain depends on your age. If you play games like GTA from a young age (8-16), you'll be more inclined to do illegal actions. Simply because your brain is still developing. As an adult, it's less likely to take notice.

Overall, a game doesn't make you stupid. It makes you who you are.
