Description

ChimpVenture is a game for the fourth YYG competition. We have been working on it for about 3 months. In ChimpVenture, you play as a Chimpanzee through 20 levels, filled with platform puzzle and challenges, as well as a few enemies. The game contains 4 bosses, 3 different items, and lots more. Your goal in ChimpVenture is to stop the humans from polluting the world more than they already have.

Enjoy!

Great game, I gave a 5/5 rating on yoyo. I wouldnt be surprised to see this in the top 3.

Some minor things:
horrible repetitive music (nice disable music option)
the monkey "spazzes" out on a circular moving platform

Everything else was great. Very polished, nice graphics, decent programming skills.

Ok the music is pretty annoying indeed.
Now to some typos I found:
In the title where it says "art and design by" or something, there is something at the A which looks wrong. And then when you save that creature it says "Thank you Chimp...These creatures arnt exactly normal." where it sould be "aren't". Not nitpicking, just wanna help. :(

I think this is a great game so far. You'll definantly place. I'm only at the caves so far, but the graphics and gameplay went very smoothly. The music was good but it got kind of awkward after a while. This game sort of reminds me of Crash Bandicoot.

Alright, review time. Gave you the same review on yoyogames.

While there are quite a few really not so good games at the yoyogames comp04, ChimpVenture shows that even a competition entry here can stand on it's own.

ChimpVenture is a loveable game, from start to finish. You take control of a monkey trying to save the world. Yes, you all saved the world countless times already but doing that in form of a monkey armed with a wooden stick is no familiar experience and it is defintely fun. You walk and jump about levels, fight the occasional enemy and collect bonus bananas for the sake of "catching them all". Your mission is to destroy mankinds 4 power generators and they're guarded by all kinds of evil animals and malicious robots you can come up with.

The controls in ChimpVenture are passable. They don't do any fancy stuff and feel a bit robotic at times but they make do. You can control your monkey with pixel precision in jumps and that's what really couns for this game. The game does not value it's own battle sequences, not giving you any rewards for actually sticking it to the man (pun intended). If you jump over enemies, they'll chase you and eventually fall off a cliff.

What sets ChimpVenture apart from the competition are it's lovable graphics. They are cute, vibrant and fit the style of the game. The amount of polish that went into the game's graphical presentation is amazing, everything is animated, fades into view or does some other effects to show that the creators thought about what their games look like. There are occasional boring parts in some levels, for example 4 swinging blue platforms over a brown background that make the screen feel dull and empty but those are the exception. Most of the time, ChimpVenture is beautiful.

Sadly, the sound side of things isn't as good. The sound effects are basic to say the least. I couldn't help but wonder if they were ripped straight from one of the earliest Donkey Kong builds out there. The background music is repetitive MIDI and doesn't really fit. Thankfully you can turn that off.

Closing comments
ChimpVenture is a cute, adorable game that revolves around an unused plot but doesn't do anything new in the gameplay part. It is well executed, features 4 giant worlds with intriguing level design and some nice replay value with the banana-collection-bonus. As good as the graphics are, the sound is truly lacking and thus prevents this game from getting the 5 star rating it would otherwise have deserved. Still, play it. It's a great game.

The good: cute graphics, clever level-design, lots of replay value
The bad: truely annoying music, battles no fun (except bosses)

Graphics: 4/5
Sound: 2/5
Gameplay: 4/5
Story: 3/5
Interface: 3/5
Overall rating: 4/5

You presented this game very well, the graphics were nice and the collisions were smooth.
My only problem is the game play. I don't find it very fun.
Otherwise, great job.

The music is a bit repetitive. The Berryster hasn't really attempted much music before, and it was really rushed (he made 3 of the songs a few hours before we submitted the game).
Thanks for the rating.

Thanks for the typos. We'll try to get a fixed version up before the competition ends <_<

Glad you liked it! I've never played Crash Bandicoot before :P

Alright, review time. Gave you the same review on yoyogames.

Thank you for the great review. :( I'm really glad you liked all the graphics. The Berryster put a lot of time into them.

In the future, I'll try to improve my AI coding, to make more interesting enemies.
The music is a bit repetitive, but The Berryster really didn't have that much time to work on it. Perhaps, after the competition is done, we'll try to make some better music for it.

My only problem is the game play. I don't find it very fun.
Otherwise, great job.

Glad you (mostly) enjoyed it.

Thank you for all the replies! Really makes it feel like 3 months of work were for something :P

Sounds good. I look forward to playing, and competing against, your game. <_<

We updated the game. We fixed quite a few typos and spelling errors, changed one of the songs a little bit, and added a water bar (displaying how long you can stay underwater for).

Hey, I remember playing this when it was WIP.

Let me start off by saying that I thought this game was good. Definitely a solid comp04 contender. But there are a lot of small things about it that I had issues with. You're going to hear a lot of complaining, but know that when push comes to shove I did like it.

Now, to start, there were some things from my post in your WIP topic that I felt held true for this release...

-When you open the big metal door with your stick, the door's opening seems totally unrelated to the smack of your stick. It moves as soon as you so much as raise your weapon, and instead of falling or breaking it slides into the ground like it's mechanized.
-There's no pause button as far as I can tell, and if there is you should tell us...
-No air attack

There was another addition which I'm not sure was there before; messages from "The Signer." I oftentimes felt like this was a stretched attempt at mimicking "World of Goo," especially when the signs served no purpose with messages like "Tricky..." or "Down we go!" Rather than speed through the level, I'd feel obligated to stop and read the signs... but since often they didn't give any particularly useful advice, it felt very forced.

Combat felt a little unpolished, particularly in how enemies reacted to being hit. The smaller guys would go flying pretty far, but it felt a little off considering you had just smacked him with a tiny, slowish swing of your little stick. Other enemies, like B.O.B, would give little to no indication they'd been hit.

I think you also could have made a better transition from game to menu and back. The game would quickly fade to the level select once you hit the edge of the level; some kind of fanfare sound, perhaps a score screen, anything so that it doesn't feel so jumpy. The end of the boss level is a perfect example of what you should have in every level. Think the flags from Mario Bros.

The limited array of music, coupled with said music's short length, made for an early decision to turn off sound.

I noticed that the tree tiles looked really nice... I think they're new, right? But the problem was that their texture didn't fit in which any of the other graphics. Either make the entire game look like that, or make the trees look like the chimp/ground tiles.

COMPLAINTS ASIDE, this is a cool game. Playing as a chimp with a stick has its undeniable charm, the levels were fun, and the graphics were cute. One thing I particularly liked were the randomized messages when you died. I rated your game a 5/5 on yoyogames, to help combat against the downraters. Good luck in the competition!

Thanks Banov, for the great reply.

I added in the pause menu, in the end. But, I didn't change the doors, as you had originally suggested. I felt they they currently worked, and I needed to work on other things that were more important.
That aside, though, we should have added the air attacks. I still have time, so, I may look into programming at least one air attack in...

I don't think we originally planned on the signs being like that, but I guess they just ended up like that. I'm not sure if we will have time to go through all the levels and change that now, though.

I could probably add a simple ending to the levels too, if I have time... But, we are running out of time for the competition. We'll see what we can do.

The music was very rushed, but my brother was running out of time... We should have started work on the music right away, but we left it off until close to the end.

The trees are pretty new... They've been there for a while though. I have to disagree with you though, I feel they fit the rest of the graphics relatively well ^_^

Sorry we didn't get all of your original suggestions into the game... We'll try to give one final update to the game tonight or tomorrow morning, though.

Glad you liked it overall, though ^_^

I understand, I know working with a deadline is tough. I'm sure with more time you could make this game many times better, but I'm glad you're doing everything you can now. Again, good luck!

Just a word of warning: Keep your current version safely locked away in a backup spot. If you fix things, you also run a risk of destroying things and noticing to late. And it would be a real shame seeing this game go down the drain for comp04 only because of last minute fixes. Not saying you will destroy the game, just hoping you keep that in mind because the chance exists. (This has happens to commercial games a lot.)

Right now, you're definitely in my favorites for the comp04. Too bad I didn't have the time to come up with something myself. Now this may be off-topic but: Does anyone already know what the next comp will be about? And when?

Really good and polished game.
Here is what I saw(and what I think Johnsen was talking about)
http://e.imagehost.o...904/screen1.png
right before the "A" in Art there is some weird curve

same in this image:

exept after the "P"

Thanks ^_^ I added in two air attacks last night, and they seem to work. I need to test more, though.

That's a very good idea. I'll do that right away. Glad your also liking the game so much ^_^
Well, the competition usually starts a few weeks after the last one.. I don't think they release any information on what the theme will be until the 4th is judged. But, you could always start coding an engine, and once you find out what the theme is, stick a storyline on it and start making graphics accordingly. Although, I could see how that may not work, as the game may still not fit the theme all that well...

Yes, those seem to be the font. We may change the font to remove those weird little things....

Thanks for all the great comments everyone!

EDIT:
We updated the game. There are now two air attacks (swing the stick in the air, and use the boomerang in the air), a better endings to the levels, as well as a lot more trash and toxic waste stuff around all the levels (instead of just the first 5).
We also removed a few pointless signs, that didn't help the player at all.

Thanks,
Drazzke and The Berryster.

When I threw the boomerang and I was on top of a rotating platform I fell and an error appeared (probably due to the fact that the boomerang is trying to come back to the player object and you destroy the player object when it falls down). Pressing ignore allowed me to continue.

This game is amazing. It has a nice look, nice gameplay and it's overall fun. However, there's something I just don't like about it. I can't really put my finger on it. It may be my hatred for chimps and it may not. I'm not sure. Don't get me wrong though, it's an AMAZING game.

Ah, thanks. Yes, that was the boomerang not finding the player object. I'll fix that right away.
