Hey, I remember playing this when it was WIP.
Let me start off by saying that I thought this game was good. Definitely a solid comp04 contender. But there are a lot of small things about it that I had issues with. You're going to hear a lot of complaining, but know that when push comes to shove I
did like it.
Now, to start, there were some things from my post in your WIP topic that I felt held true for this release...
-When you open the big metal door with your stick, the door's opening seems totally unrelated to the smack of your stick. It moves as soon as you so much as raise your weapon, and instead of falling or breaking it slides into the ground like it's mechanized.
-There's no pause button as far as I can tell, and if there is you should tell us...
-No air attack
There was another addition which I'm not sure was there before; messages from "The Signer." I oftentimes felt like this was a stretched attempt at mimicking "World of Goo," especially when the signs served no purpose with messages like "Tricky..." or "Down we go!" Rather than speed through the level, I'd feel obligated to stop and read the signs... but since often they didn't give any particularly useful advice, it felt very forced.
Combat felt a little unpolished, particularly in how enemies reacted to being hit. The smaller guys would go flying pretty far, but it felt a little off considering you had just smacked him with a tiny, slowish swing of your little stick. Other enemies, like B.O.B, would give little to no indication they'd been hit.
I think you also could have made a better transition from game to menu and back. The game would quickly fade to the level select once you hit the edge of the level; some kind of fanfare sound, perhaps a score screen, anything so that it doesn't feel so jumpy. The end of the boss level is a perfect example of what you should have in every level. Think the flags from Mario Bros.
The limited array of music, coupled with said music's short length, made for an early decision to turn off sound.
I noticed that the tree tiles looked really nice... I think they're new, right? But the problem was that their texture didn't fit in which any of the other graphics. Either make the entire game look like that, or make the trees look like the chimp/ground tiles.
COMPLAINTS ASIDE, this is a cool game. Playing as a chimp with a stick has its undeniable charm, the levels were fun, and the graphics were cute. One thing I particularly liked were the randomized messages when you died. I rated your game a 5/5 on yoyogames, to help combat against the downraters. Good luck in the competition!
