At first I didn't find the game very exciting, but after a few levels I adapted to the minor flaws in gameplay and found the game to be increasingly more interesting. I played through the whole thing, and I must say I loved the storyline and characters and especially the dialouge, which was very well written, quite a lot more decent than any other I've seen, especially in a gamemaker game.

The boss fights were somewhat fun, although sometimes seemed to drag on a little, and I felt that some were a tad too easy. You may need to work on that a little. The graphic style was nice though, I especially liked the way Red was sprited.

I don't want to drag on with a very detailed review, but overall I'd say this game was short and sweet. There were small flaws in gameplay, and I feel the game is lacking a little, but it was a great experience nonetheless.

I hope to see more from you!

Just found this through Bytejacker. Really well made, with great music and writing. I love the little speech bubbles in combat.

I wish some of the coins/targets (I forget what they're called in the game) were a little harder to get, but that's my only complaint.

Great job!

I posted this in the Cage Match and it mini-reviewed both Assassin Blue and EcoRush, so I am going to repost it here.

I really enjoyed Assassin Blue, but really only for the story and bosses, as I am not a fan of fighting platformers. But, the real reason I didn't vote AB was (let the nasty replies begin...) the graphics. I realize what he was going for. A unique, hand-drawn visual style that was original. Well...I don't think it was pulled off well. The bricks were purposly very poorly drawn, but not in a way that made them fun or good. They just were...bad. And, also, the characters, though they had good personality (well...at least Blue and Red did) drawn into them, just looked very bad. It looked quite cheap, in my opinion. I would love to see them with a little more gloss and finish to them. Maybe get a pixel artists to make some for you. However, though I felt the graphics (most of them) lacked, the sound was top notch. I do not remember background music while playing (I don't think I was really paying attention to it, but that means that it did not take away from the experience, which is very good), but the sound effects were wonderful. On another note, the enemies were really boring, repetetive, and it took to long to defeat the average enemy. So, in section 2 (the jungle stages) and after I found myself just avoiding them. But now, onto the pros. The levels themselves were very well designed, especially with the placement of the targets. The bosses were wonderful and I found them to be quite a challenge, but nothing that I couldn't beat in three tries or less. And, even when i did die, I was taken to a sort of half-way mark if I had gotten far enough, making it so that I did not what to give up. And, the best part of the game, the story. I loved it. It was very well thought out and was well told. I will be anxiously awaiting for the story in Yellow Goo Love. Just be aware, Banov, that you have a very good story to live up to, so I would spend some quality time with a pencil and a notepad thinking up good twists and turns, because average is NOT going to cut it. Also, please note that I hope you are not affended by anything I have said, Banov, as I try to be as nice as possible when giving reviews and critiques, unlike some people whom I have heard on this forum. Also, I commend you on your wonderful work.

Now, on to EcoRush, the game I voted for. The reason I voted for EcoRush was, mainly, because it had a cleaner feel, mainly with the graphics and sound. I found no flaws in the what-so-ever. They were A+ in my book, and deffinitally matched that of a commercial game, surpassing some of them. As, for the gameplay, it is about a C+, maybe a B-. It was an extremally fun concept but I feel that if they make it less of a random "dice-roll" that it will be great. I am anxiously awaiting the update, because it sounds like it will be great, especially the different species with DIFFERENT STATS. That is wonderful news, and might make the random roll OK, because it will require more strategic thinking.

Now, I commend you both for your hard work in creating two glorious games and I can not wait to see what is coming next. We need more of you guys on the forum, that is, people who are really dedicated to their work, as I can tell you both are.

This game is getting so much attention... I've never seen it disappear from the first page! Very nice job, banov.
Now, if you don't mind, I will supply you with yet another honest, unbiased review...
Graphics: 5/5 -- quite flavorful. These graphics remind me of An Untitled Story. They gave the game most of its charm. Also, animations were very smooth.
Sound: 5/5 -- the sounds all seemed to fit together nicely. They were, for the most part, satisfying. The music was somewhat bland in some areas, but I really loved the music in the last area, the red castle.
Concept: 4/5 -- it wasn't such an original style. Just another well-made swordfighting game. But an assassin whose main focus is bringing peace? The storyline upped the grade.
Gameplay: 4/5 -- the game sometimes seemed somewhat slow. Running through levels, fighting off ubiquitous enemies... I kind of wished for a faster-paced fighting system. Or at least more variety.
Programming: 4/5 -- I encountered the dreaded bug that many platformers suffer from: the corner glitch. You get stuck when you land on the corner of a platform... Also, there is a glitch that I encountered and took a screeny of. Check it out below.
Bonus: 5/5 -- combos to buy, a movie, a boss run... many goodies!
Overall: 5/5 -- Excellent! I would really like to commend you for making such a great GM game.
Trophies:
  • Charm award -- for charming graphics and story.
  • Concrete award -- for solid gameplay and programming, almost or entirely seamless.
  • Afterthought award -- for a storyline that promotes thought, even after the player exits the game.
  • Replay award -- for replay value.
Now, for the two specific minuses I spotted. First, the glitch:
Posted Image
I was stuck in the floor that can be switched on/off. In that particular spot, you can reach the button with your sword, and the floors solidify on top of you. You can't swipe again to undo the switch, but instead have to restart the level.
Next is a typo I found in the movie about Blue's past.
Posted Image
The "the" that is circled in red shouldn't be there. The "the" circled in green is correct. Sorry if this is at all a spoiler to anyone who reads this without having first played the game, I'm just trying to help banov...
And I'll leave it at that. This is very well done. Assassin Blue!

Excellent game. Great storyline, great gameplay, great graphics, great music... I can't fault it, really. A bit short, perhaps. Maybe the fighting system could be faster, or less monotonous, as Benjamus said. Other than that, a really, really great Game Maker game. Shows that you don't need to go all minimalist and arty, or have an amazingly unique idea, to make an awesome game!

Graphics- 4/5- I liked the way the graphics were drawn. The only graphic I would complain about were the red circles for blood.

Music- 4/5- Some were a little empty-ish (the last boss battle music I found to be not so epic as I had expected from the previous music) but overall, the music was definitely a strong point.

Gameplay- 5/5- Asides the corner glitch, the gameplay was fluid and I found it to be very enjoyable, especially with the extra attacks you could do.

Story- 4/5- somewhat cliched, but whenever he turned good, and along with the extra cinematic on his past, it certainly raised the score for this area.

Replayability- 5/5- I did certainly find myself going back through levels to try and get all the targets (I've got 36 out of 40) and I did replay the final battle several times over.

Overall- 4/5- A very fluid game, with a good storyline, excellent replayability and a very nice soundtrack, along with some nice graphics. However, there were just a few things which detracted from the gameplay (the corner glitch, for example). But overall, it's a superb game. Nice one (:

It'd be fun to play, but it'd kind of ruin the story.

I agree; no sequel. It'd be like how Disney makes sequels to all the classic movies and ends up ruining it...
Not that I'm saying a sequel to AB would be a bad game, I just mean that it would ruin it kinda. Best to leave it where it is.

I have a small bug to report. During boss rush mode, right after the end of the cutscene where Riley shows off his blue wave attack, I accidentally paused. After I unpaused Riley was frozen in one place. I couldn't hurt him, and he didn't move. Interestingly enough, it also appeared like he had two swords.

I disagree. There's a lot of interesting possibilities for a sequel here.

SPOILER and stuff: (Does this forum have spoiler tags?)

The story is nice enough, but it seems more like a prologue than a complete piece. I find myself wondering what happens next.

Blue has now wowed to not kill anyone ever again. What happens now? What happens if he will yet again have to fight? Does he even know anything other than fighting? Heck, what happens with Red? Does he become a different person? Maybe he'll just end up starting his own assassination organization, which Blue would naturally have to stop (without killing anyone). This allows for not only an interesting expansion to the story, but for the gameplay as well. With Blue's wov, he'd either have to resort to fistfighting/gauntlets, making the combat more fast-paced and blocking more difficult, or there'd be a different way to avoid killing your foes without simply running past them, Perhaps by sneaking past them (like an actual assassin), or using weaker combos using your blade backwards.

Heck, maybe the brothers unite against a common foe making for co-op action. Co-op action is always welcome.

SPOILER ENDED A WHILE AGO.

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like any fun at all.
For one, who would team up with someone who cut their arm off?
After having all the fun of fighting the enemies with crazy sword techniques, would want to resort to skipping every enemy?
Using the blade backwards? Who would think of that?
How would Blue stop an assassination organization without killing anyone?

I seriously don't see the need to make a sequel. Naturally, I'd play it, but I don't like the idea. Blue's story is good enough as it is, and I'd rather see Banov spend his time on a different game with a different story.

I agree with AndrewAP. Blue is awesome as-is. We don't really need co-op stuff. His story's been told, and now it's time for someone else's story to begin... *Creepy music fades in*

The thing is that the story in Assassin Blue isn't, in fact, a masterpiece. Its story is very much akin to trashy shonen-manga. Come on, I mean:

*Spoilers go here*
-Red and blue brothers?
-A civilian who was just told to go into an ancient, egyptian, heavily-guarded pyramid with a ghost guarding the door he's behind?
-How did that civilian even get there?
-I guess our boss placed the guards there after that civilian had gotten there with the help of someone, iono.
-Swords that shoot blastwaves.
-Goblins with modern grenades in a time where everyone appear to use swords.
-Those drawings in the bonus story were hilarious.

I am not mocking the story of Assassin Blue, I'm just calling it for what it is, which is good times with sword-action (except for the QTEs, those are lame times). When I say 'trashy', I don't mean it's crud, just that it's not something to be taken seriously, like Ranma, Naruto and One Piece just to name a few, I won't mind what's going on as long as there are battles and flashy action.

On the topic of Shonen Manga, the protagonist in Rurouni Kenshin is an assassin who sworn of killing and started to use his blade backwards, and it's hardly the only example of backwards-blade usage. I can also mention the sword in Metal Gear Solid 2 which could be flipped backwards to knock out the enemy and Zoro in One Piece used his swords backwards when he didn't want to kill the enemy.
It's ridiculously implausable, of course, but it's not unusual in fiction.

As for this:

How would Blue stop an assassination organization without killing anyone?

That would kind of be the point of the story. It's the same struggle Batman has, and he seems to be doing okay.

Important though: I'd like to see an Assassin Blue 2, but Banov should only make it if that is, in fact, what he would like to.

Great game, i really liked the gameplay and the graphics. The story also fits the game well. Also the last levels are the most funny, the first one are a bit boring. Also make differen t diffuclties (cant spell). Also maybe do the game a little more assassin like, you know like stealth. Also, did you ever played assassins creed? Because this game reminds me a bit of it. But good job, and i really hope you make a sequel.

Seriously, though, it's awsome. The simple graphical style, the music, the engine, the story. Everything about it is great. Only problem was that it ended too soon. I especially loved that twist you threw in with the unlockable cutscene. Epic...

This is so worthy of a 10/10.

Story: 6/10
Sound: 3/10 (no sound effects, only music)
Overall (not an average): 8/10

However, Assesin's Creed is more fun ;) .

If there is a sequel, I think it should cover Red's story in a more in-depth way.

Now thereĀ“s a golden idea, kinda just a remake with red instwead of blue in the title, kinda pokemon-ish thing

Nice game, oldschool gameplay with original stuff included, i really liked the anime-samurai-couter-thingy that was really fun

The only thing its it was all too easy, i only died when i was tryin to get the targets, and when tryin to counter every-single samurai, and the unlimited lives thing made me play like a crazy monkey, jumping through every hole to see if there were targets there :P

Some people like games that dont only give you 3 chances to beat the game.

Like me... :P
Unlimited chances, tough challenge, my motto.
A game that is hard and does not limit the amount of times you can die is a game I will like better than one where you cannot.

ok, im down with that, but was not the case of this game, thats what im sayin. It was easy AND had unlimited lives, i mean, none of the bosses would even hit me if i wasnt tryin to counter their crazy slashin moves every time you know?

Im not sayin to put 3 lives at this game, it would be meaningless in a ame where you can save you progress and has shorts stages like this, all im sayin is to tune up the difficulty a bit

Regardless of the fact that I could play through the game in one short sitting, this game was fantastic, 10/10.
A more lengthy sequel would be fantastic. I know he's never going to kill again, but you could maybe make it a prelude.
