Edit: More Features described in later posts (this one's a bit old)

finally after several months, I've finally finished the first release of my latest gamemaker project. The physics of the game are slightly different from 2D Mario as everything was coded entirely from scratch.
Continuing from the Mario constructor Demo, this program will enable anyone to quickly create and customize their own levels, (without having to use ROMs or emulators).

Level Editor Features:
  • Instance placement made easy: Just click on the relevant panel than on the screen where you want to place the instance.
  • Area selection and filling: The editor gives you the ability to select areas, to fill with patterns of tiles and certain objects. Thus drastically decreasing the time taken to build levels.
Posted Image
  • Instance Customization: You can change the properties of instances once their created such as warp passages and bowser's attacks patterns. This feature is also available:
    • for rotodisks (radius, direction,speed)
    • bullet bill cannons(fire delay and fire chance),
    • travelling platforms (horizontal and vertical speed)...
Just middle click on object marked with a #.
  • Sectioning: Each level is divided into 3 sections for which you can customize the background, music and water level.
  • Over 100 objects to choose from
  • A wide selection of background and foreground tiles: Including pipe connectors, blocks, land terrain and much more. The placement of solid markers and jump through blocks is also done automatically whenever you place down a tile or pattern of tiles (you can change this if you wish).
  • and much more!

Gamemplay Features:
  • A water level system which is adjustable with crystals
  • A wide array of enemies including multiple varietys of goombas, koopa troopas, buzy beetles.
Other enemies include bullet bill cannons, lakitus, enemy bros (fire, hammer and boomerang)...
  • Mario is equiped with a range of abilities: climbing, swimming, grabing and throwing objects. Powerups include fireflower, beetroot and starman and various types of mushrooms.
  • Bowser is equipped with 4 deadly abilities including hammer throwing and tripple flame
  • There is a wide array of platforms and obstacles including flip blocks, travelling platforms and note blocks...
  • Checkpoint and inventory box systems
  • Various graphics, sounds and music, that were modified from freeware sources (see credits section) + some I made myself -_- .
  • Careful use of instance deactivation code in order to reduce lag time.

Well I hope you enjoy using this utility, as much as I enjoy making it (minus the sleepless nights and programming frustrations).
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

This is great - even for a clone, most physics are great, level editor is nice etc. I suggest a few screenies in the first post.

Nice work!

Thank you all for your support. :GM072:

I've recently made some updates to the game:

  • Water appears in front of tiles when you create a new level
  • Fixed glitch with linking pipe passages between sections (link to existing transport)
  • Reduced time the program pauses, after Mario dies
  • Filling areas with objects, is still applicable when automatic placement of solid markers and platforms is off.
If you want the slightly newer version, please
Go to the webpage
and click refresh.

I'll be uploading some sample levels soon.

Have Fun!

Thank you, I tried posting including screenshots in the first post, but they wouldn\'t appear as they were to large (640 *580 pixels), and for some strange reason 110mb.com, will only people to view pictures unless they are part of a web page.

So I scaled them down this time and used image shack:

BTW I\'m currently working on an update for the game, which will include more varietys of toggle blocks (and there corresponding switches), maybe full screen mode and the removal of a glitch that occurs from pressing cancel when loading a game... .
It so far appears to be fully compatible with levels made with earlier versions, stay tuned...
:P

New Release 1.3:

  • 4 new varietys of toggle blocks and the ability to alter their related block sprites.
  • Fade blocks, that increase in opacity as mario approach them (and fade as he moves away).
  • Playtest mode
    • You can create temporary save points.
    • activate invincibility at any time during playtesting
    • You can levitate (by pressing 1)
    • Other than that physics remain the same and you can return to the level editor at any time.
  • Fixed a glitch with deactivating toggle blocks, thus saving memory.
  • You can change the window resolution: resizable, fullscreen or the standard (650*580)
  • You can alter the horizontal speed of koopa pogo troopers and koopa paratroopers.
  • Full compatibility with levels (*.mcl)/ level templates (*.mct) made with older editors.

Does this require Pro Edition of Game Maker to use?

No, it's a self contained program not a gamemaker engine, so it will run under any xp/vista computer regaurdless of whether or not gamemaker is installed.
In fact this level editor was made using the lite version of gamemaker.
I hope to expand the game even further if I can ever get the advanced version...

Glitch fixed:
In the earliest release of version 1.3 there was a glitch that caused all toggle blocks onscreen to change into green toggle blocks if the user saved the level as a .mct template file.
Sorry about that I fixed it and increased the area for which instances are active during playtest mode and gameplay mode (You can download the fix from the website).

If you don't experience this glitch don't worry :D

If you have any glitches to report, ideas for a new version, constructive criticism please feel free to post, especially if you have levels you want to share. :D

Video Tutorial How to make a quality Mario Level in under 10 minutes

I've uploaded a video tutorial to youtube on making levels with mario constructor forever (in under 10 minutes due to Youtube's video length policy).

The address is:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=brLyToDX0XE

Have a look and feel free to comment

NOTE: The actual game has much better graphics than the video but I recorded to AVI format and scaled it down, resulting in a loss in video quality.

It was interesting. Not something I think I will keep at the moment though.

Good user interface, easy to use, and was fun. The physics need to be tweaked a bit so it feels more like a Mario game. I didn't find any glitches though.

I'd like to see where this will go.

Its really well made. Much better than Mario Worker. I am gonna use it sure...
I thought the interface could have been more appealing. I am talking professional.

I hope you do get PRO. You can use it better than most of the users here.

Keep it up! ^_^

I really don't see a better way to have the GUI considering how many different things there are in Mario games.

The bolded part struck me as an insult. Perhaps I just misunderstood but that way it was worded...

I don't pretend to be better than anyone here especially as I'm still lacking the pro version of gamemaker.

Good user interface, easy to use, and was fun. The physics need to be tweaked a bit so it feels more like a Mario game. I didn't find any glitches though.

I know the physics of the player aren't perfect, perhaps I could look at djrellik's engine to fix the problem...

interesting.

The same file extension as windows media library (.mcl) was a coincidence, its hard to create a good 3 letter acronym that hasn't already been used.

I really should be getting back to using gamemaker soon, it's been about 12 days since I've used it, (I got distracted by xbox games + preparing for uni)

"Most of the users" doesn't mean you, or anybody specific. I wonder how it cold feel like an insult.
And the GUI COULD be better, not the layout though.

95% of all programming was done by me (hence why the physics of when Mario runs and jumps are not perfect.)

However I did get some help from DJrellik's engine (mostly sprites which I later resized).

I also used some sounds and sprites from Mario Forever (a freeware game developed by Buziol/Banesoft).

Sorry but I'm not ready to release the source file yet.

I've released a new version 1.5.2
Which features:
  • Fixing of multiple gameplay glitches.
  • Inertia plays a larger part in player movement, and changing direction in midair is not as jerky (hopefully making the player easier to control).
  • All walking enemies are effected by jump through blocks.
  • You can now turn the liquid level into toxic water or deadly magma!
  • You can have upto 3 levels per levelset!
  • World and level names are now kept seperate
  • New enemies of chain chomps (2 different sprites) and Banzai bullet bills have been added
  • Compatibility with levels made with older versions
  • Much more

Version 1.6 is now available:

Featuring:
  • Compatibility and features of 1.5.2 (toxic water, chain chomp etc.)
  • Fixes of several more gameplay glitches
  • Dry bones (2 types)
  • Vines grow gradually from blocks SMW style
  • A way of swapping individual levels between mct levelsets using a new text based .MCE (Mario Constructor Export) format (which I spent hours inventing).
It can be utilized using the IMPORT and EXPORT functions in the menu (NOT load and save).

Note that the old methods of saving/loading entire levelsets still exists
