Mobile Suit Grunt Wars is a fast-paced Top Down shooter based on the Japanese series Mobile suit Gundam Seed. Although many of the game's features have been removed for this gameplay test demo, the game will feature:
  • story mode
  • A selection of pilotable mobile suits (mechs)
  • A wide array of weapons
  • Cooperative AI team mates
  • will allow the option switching of current control scheme to wasd directional control scheme
  • online play


I am not finished crediting people...

General Notes:

  • Before you play please read the Read_Me
  • press F1 in the game to see controls
  • game uses surfaces

Il get the first post. I tell you the truth. You will not get any downloads until that filesize comes down atleast 15-20 mbs. A lot of people have regular internet or 5x faster. Not DSL. Take out all the unused sprites room or codes not used and if you get it down to 15 mb you might get a download.

slowing down the enemy units by a tad would help because it's really hard to keep up with them the way they are now.
(enemy units in gundam were never that fast anyways)

having a longer view distance would help a lot too , the way it is now you can only see about 5 gundams width wise(yes I'm measuring in gundams)

the way things are now you only get to see the enemies on the battlefield for a second if lucky, they usually zoom off before you can take aim

I'd also suggest going full screen

it's pretty impressive the way it is, you got the fundamentals down pretty well, just needs a few minor tweaks for playability

Hmm this seems pretty good... but it was hard to move...

There's another game based off of Gundam Seed, its called Gundam Seed Mobile Fighter, its in korean (too bad for me...) but the videos show fast paced 3d killing action..., but it is a commercial game anyway...

Ok then how could I fix the movement?

In the next build the screen is going to be a bigger so you can see more and track your enemies bigger.
Btw I think your talking about capsule fighter right?

I think besides movement, the biggest problem is not being able to see much normally, You can see enough if you use Q and extend your mouse, but if you don't you can't do much...

From what you said I think you must h ave been pressing 'E' which is breaks
boost is 'space bar'

but yeah i think I fixed the view problem

Ill post that version today as soon as I finish tweaking it

Very nice use of graphics and special effects. Because this is a performance test, i think you'd be happy to know that i had a strong FPS the whole time. However game wise, i couldn't play it well. Movement was too hard, enemies came on the screen for a split second and were gone before you knew it.

* Make the view size bigger, like twice the size. Maybe even have it the size of the screen and in fullscreen mode?
* Movement was weird, i couldn't control it. Make WASD move the machine up, left, fown right.

If you could fix those 2 things it would be an incredible game :P

I thought about switching to wasd but I realized that if your going at full speed the game will become difficult to control and you wont be able to dodge efficiently anymore. In order to combat that setback I am going to make a training level where you will get used to piloting the machines.

I think you'll find that many MANY people are very used to WASD for topdown games, and it is not hard to manouver quickly if needed. Could you please at least make a setting that you can choose from WASD or the current setting? This will satisfy all players :P PLEASE!

Thanks and i guarentee to you that if you make the view size larger and have that option you will get many more replies. Lots of people only reply if they like what they've played, they don't bother with games they couldn't play.

Another issue i realized was that my keyboard sometimes freezes if you press more then two keys...
Does anyone else's do that?

This will become an issue if your trying to go diagonal, use target, and boost at the same time.

Ok I updated the file and now the game (I hope) should be more playable.
I am still in the middle of programming the wasd thing so that it works right so its not in the game yet

Btw I wasn't pressing the brake button, I was just normally walking, and sometimes boost wouldn't turn a direction, so I'd have to stop and redo it.

Make the basic view, just normal view, bigger. It still gets confusing if you your mouse is going all over the place, because the screen moves a lot, and it's hard to see.

I have no idea of how to get more people to comment...

Honestly Ive been trying to make it work and the game is not as fun. However I will still make t an option. Also I realized that in making the game have wasd controls I will be making it play like every other game which I'm really not trying to do. You are supposed to feel like you are piloting a mech not playing as a foot soldier. Also different vehicles in the game will have different controls.

The main reason that wasd wont work is that the controls are like this


Q target W up E brakes
A left S down D right

Like this players will have a tough time using Q and E which are also essential to gameplay.

Also other vehicles will have different controls. Tanks will control kind of like they do in The Tank Game

Planes will also be different and so will 4 legged mechs

Wow... very very nice engine u have there. The targeting system is cool with the little view on top. The weapons are cool too. The movement controls are great too although I'm not sure how I'm supposed to switch weapons. But i pressed the number keys and got some sweet weapons. I guess those are for testing only but the weapon u get with the 4-key is LETHAL man.. :medieval:

The effects and graphics are great but they are harsh on my CPU tho. Maybe an option to reduce these particle effects or something? If the gameplay is as lag free as the battle in the title screen (in the background), this game will kick ass. :medieval:

I think that the reason you are not getting enough comments is that what you have right now is a great (tho still buggy) game engine but not much of a game yet. (Or maybe they just look at the file size and the huge 'Known Bugs' list and run away.. :D) The HUD should be improved i think. The dots in the radar should be bigger and the radar itself shouldn't get smaller when ur zooming out and targeting by using the Q-key. And I still can't figure out what the 3 bars at the bottom of the screen are. Which one's armor and what are the other two?

I don't really know much about the Gundam series (altho I've played a Gundam game once on PS3 at a friend's) but I know that it's similar to Armored Core, one of my favorite game series. It's exactly like this. u have a weapon for the right arm, left arm, shoulder mounted guns, u got thrusters, extension equipment, customizable in the garage/hangar, etc. There's even an energy sword-like weapon there. So this is definitely my type of game and I look forward to future updates. ;) Just keep working on the game, don't worry too much about the comments. Once u release something quite solid with not a lot of bugs/lagging issues, the comments will come.... i think.

wow... thanks for such a lengthy response. I have been working on a lot of the things you mentioned. I think that I am going to try and make a display that is on the side or bottom kind of the way yours is except it will represent the cocpit of the machine your piloting.
I have already started making mission scenerios. I actually did get a lot of my inspiration from armored core and the missions are going to be a little similar to that game.

the 3 bars on the bottom of the screen are:
1)fuel (for boosting)

2)speed

3)armor
in that order.

Funny you mention the graphics because i have just started working on a way to fix them and allow settings to adjust to certain computers. The computer i have been working on all of a sudden won't allow me to use surfaces so your issue is a legitament one which I will definitly have to solve.

Hopefully we will see many of the issues solved in the next release. And thanks for letting me know what you thought about the errors log... i will have it removed from the 1st page.

wow... thanks for such a lengthy response. I have been working on a lot of the things you mentioned. I think that I am going to try and make a display that is on the side or bottom kind of the way yours is except it will represent the cocpit of the machine your piloting.
I have already started making mission scenerios. I actually did get a lot of my inspiration from armored core and the missions are going to be a little similar to that game.


Funny, meanwhile I'm trying to make the camera in my game zoom in/out smoothly like yours. <_< My game is also semi-inspired by Armored Core too.. lol.

But I digress.
I think the music is ok. It's fitting for a fast-paced action game. But what you need to focus on mainly is the lagging/performance issues. Once u've finished fixing that u should quickly upload it.

btw, are u gonna make the enemy's armor display on the screen (like in Armored Core)? Because it's kinda hard to tell how much you've damaged the enemy without it.

Im not really sure...
should I?

If I do I will make it so that you only see the health of mechs your targeting and it will be a 2d simplified version of the mech in green and red.

As for the lag issue...
I had a couple ideas on how to solve it.
First: I will finish what i said before with the options and effects
Second: I will try and make the game animate the sprites in realtime so that it no longer requires the big ass gif files which take up a lot of ram. This will take a lot of time and care programming to do so...

BTW be careful with the camera thing. some of the people who played my game said that it was kind of annoying. Make it an option.

U mean the game lags really slow when recording it, is it? I only know AutoScreenRecorder but I don't know if it's better. I used to use that a long time ago to record my GM games in my old PC but that too didn't record my screen well. It was kinda laggy (although still watchable). Also the free version doesn't record sound although there is no logo displayed. I think HyperCam is better since more people recommend it but I haven't tried it honestly.

I've seen some youtube GM gameplay vids that are really smooth tho. I don't know what program they use.

I just tried recording my game on multiple computers... They all make my game look really bad. I don't think it is recordable. I feel like the particle systems are what is making the game look so bad

I will probably still post the video I recorded

I am about to release an update. A lot of people told me that I should make the controls more simplistic like other TDSs so I added the option to make controls not relative to mouse. When that option is selected you will go up when you press W, go down when you press S, go right when you presss D, and go left when you press A. Just keep in mind that the game becomes significantly harder when this mode is selected. This is because the players mech moves less fluid while the enemies remain quick and agile and the player now has to really think about the direction they are pressing in order to dodge lasers and missiles.

Still I urge players to adapt to the games original control system or at least give it a chance. The game should be thought of more as a top down combat flight sim than a top down mech shooter because in the game the player must make quick maneuvers and turns to dodge laser, missiles, mechs speeding at you with beam swords and other hazards.

Another thing that you will find in the next release is a system which Ikind of got from cod4 which allows you to call in different types of airstrikes from your home base or mother ship. For example if you damage 5 mobile suits (mechs) siginificantly you will be able to call in a bombardment from support aircraft or an artillery barrage. If you get five more enemy kills or damages you will be able to call in a beam barrage or particle beam shot from a ally ship at your enemy. There will be other attacks like a driveby/flyby attack from another mech.

Although it will not be in the next release i am work hard to develope a multiplayer system. If it works it should be a lot of fun.

I downloaded the most recent version and one of the previous versions. I'm mostly interested in this because it's robots fighting and it's Gundam :)

I especially like the sound effects and the explosions. Very nice.

The little intro for the Hangar with the Alliance officer is pretty cool too but could definitely use some work. I was not sure how to choose a suit in the Hangar for instance. I walked the little guy in the orange pilot suit down to the bottom of the suits and while a GINN did show up on the right about twice before flickering away, the guy got stuck at the bottom and while he could turn, he couldn't move. The same thing happens when I walk him to the top.

I eventually decided to press the 'Space' bar when I saw the GINN appear and sure enough the animation began to roll out a MS.

Maybe a simpler selection process is needed.

Also note that the explosion and smoke effects from the background battle on the startup screen are taken over to the Hangar intro and can mess with the reading of what the officer is telling you.

I don't think I'm getting the opportunity to enjoy the game. Everything is moving super-quick and by the time you start to get a handle on it, you explode.
I think a BIG problem is the initial level of zoom. Please try to make the game full-screen or at least bigger.

Please label the bars indicating the armour, thrusters.
This may need an easy/tutorial mode where targeting should be easier and enemies should be less lethal i.e. one beam saber hit shouldn't kill you.

The piloting controls isn't such a big deal to me but the usefulness of the radar and the difficulty to target players is not appealing.

Otherwise, great job! I'm inspired to try making a game one day.
