I don't know of any reliable way to get into contact with them -- they don't seem too responsive to emails about activation concerns, so I doubt they'd respond to emails about copyright concerns either. Besides, since it's a prize that's already been awarded to someone, what can they do now, ask for the money back? If you have a reliable way of contacting them I'll consider it, though.

Cop out.

Earlier you specifically said you did nothing because "you didn't want to get the previous winners in trouble". Now you say you might consider it, but you can't reliably contact them. That's just lame.

Assuming the cheque has been cut and cashed, then no, YYGs can't get the money back. At least not cost effectively. However, they can ensure that the previous violators don't benefit again. They can also use the violation as an example, to reduce future abuses. Maybe even impliment better checks and balances.

You're the guy who made the accusation, first against YoYoGames for having rules and not enforcing them, even though you have not shown any evidence that they knew about your alleged copyright violation. Now you're in a position of doing something about it, but you won't.

Now you're making allegations that past contest winners cheated. Not naming them casts doubt on all past winners.

It's more important that you be a nice guy, who cares that you've just put all past contest winners into the same dark shadow.

I'm still investigating the issue. The musician in question is a friend of a friend so I'm contacting him first to investigate before doing anything about it. I didn't mean to cast doubt on all past winners.

And, by saying that they aren't enforcing the rules, I obviously didn't mean that they knew about it and did nothing, that'd make no sense. Try to give others the benefit of the doubt sometimes, instead of assuming weird interpretations of what they say.

Oh, so now you're investigating.

Just so I don't get accused of a weird interpretation, should I interpret that to mean, that you think there may have been a copyright violation, but you're not convinced yet.

Even the winners of previous contests have sometimes used copyrighted material without consequence (I could name a few but I don't want to get them in trouble, it's usually just the music, since copyrighted sprites are more obvious)

And should I also interpret that to mean, you think there might have been a copyright violation, but you're not convinced yet, and are still investigating.

Nope, no matter how hard I try, I just can't interpret that any other way then; you know copyright violations have happened multiple times, but don't want to get involved.

Of course, please explain what you really meant, if my interpretation is just to weird.

I wouldn't say your interpretation there is totally incorrect, but there are complexities in the issue. If you like, I can PM you the details, but I don't want to hijack this thread with something irrelevant to it.

Complexities, I understand and accept.

There is no need to PM me the details.

Which game(s) is it that you suspect broke the rules, Rinku? What particular assets of those games are in question?

You can PM me about it if you don't want to expose anything yet... I'm just a bit curious now.

So let me get this clear: For our games to do the best in the compo, it has to be playable by the obese football-fan and the 8-year-old kid...

I guess so. Thanks for clearing this up. I've got the perfect game in mind. :D It's called "GMC Members Save the Earth".

Please make this game

Oh, also 'or even a real concern' - same can be said about the 'environmental crisis,' oddly enough. So if I'm making something for a contest whose primary theme I don't agree with, I feel free to make an entry whose primary theme you don't agree with.

it's just asking you to develop a game where saving the planet from an environmental disaster is the goal.

I hope you're wrong on this one... I mean... making a game which has "saving our* planet from an environmental disaster" as its goal, seems way too narrowing. I have an idea about a game in which the game is about saving some planet from some "disaster", and it will not have the "message" the competition talks about, but I'm going to try to enter anyways (provided I can work out the idea of the game) but I just don't feel like making a game with a message and my opinion is that YYG cannot enforce us to make the game be about our planet.

*: whenever I read "save the planet" it feels like it is saying "save our planet". I don't say you're saying that, but I read it that way.

Well, they've said it doesn't have to be this planet, but that they want to see an environmental focus on the catastrophe. Read YoYoJim's post a few down into this topic for a better explanation of the rules.

Of course, YYG can't force you to make a game about anything... but they can make the rules of their contest however they want, so if it really doesn't fit what you want, why bother entering? Granted, they've yet to turn down anyone's games on grounds of not sticking to the theme, to my knowledge, but still... If you can't get into the theme, just wait for the next competition.

Don't make me play every winning game just to find an obscure copyright infringement, please tell us?

I haven't entered in a competition before, so this should be interesting... :)

My first thought when I saw this theme was: TONS of games feature a storyline in which you (the player) save the world from something all by yourself.

I'm know that isn't what they meant by "save the world", but it does in fact fit perfectly in that category. Just a thought.

Okay, I gave this a lot more thought than I did before. Frankly I think the competition is going to have great games submitted to it.
I am looking forward to the results of this competition. I do recommend making your rules more strict and demanding. (not that they aren't already).

I am making a game I was going to submit into the competition. But reading the entire thing I don't think I will. Instead it'll just be a normal game! :)

In keeping with the forum's tradition with the previous competitions, I've got some screens to show of what I've made so far:

All I'm saying right now is that the game will have a focus on driving, and that aside from collisions, my driving engine is basically finished. I've got a few more screens at my blog, as well as a little bit more of an explanation too. Check it out, if you like.

Great screenshots Fred, although i had seen them at your blog* before you posted. I think this competition is great IMO because there are so many different ways to "Save the Planet", and more original ideas will get produced.

Haha, well, I've yet to program much of the core gameplay yet, so whether or not the game will be fun enough to win anything remains to be seen. I do appreciate the compliment, though.
