I've been at the GMC for awhile, though I just started logging on again. I decided to go ahead and upgrade GM7 to the pro version instead of staying with 6.1, primarily in case I decided to upgrade to Vista.
I've been looking at Vista's 64-bit editions and I'm seriously considering upgrading, so I've been checking compatibility issues for programs I use often or relatively often. That being said, I couldn't find very much at all in regards to GM7's compatibility with Vista's 64-bit edition, other than a few posts which from June that touted issues between GM7 and Vista in general. So, is GM7 compatible with Vista x64? Thanks for any and all help |

The text on the object tabs don't show up on XP and Vista 64 bit editions. For both GM 6.x and 7.

I also found the code editor does odd things as well with the syntax highlighting, and sometimes it will use the totally wrong font.
It's not unusable but is has some annoying quirks. |

So there aren't any absolutely hampering problems then? I only have one row of tabs (no libs installed) so I could probably find everything with random clicks.
Destron, how bad have you noticed the syntax highlighting and fonts to be? Are you using gm on vista x64 now, or have you just seen/tried it before? |

No, my laptop has Vista premium, that's what I mostly use, but I have a desktop box with vista x64 on it. I have used GM on it quite a bit and have not found anything absolutely hampering. The tab labels is a consistent flaw, they are never there. The main thing with the syntax highlighting is that everything will turn one color, usually blue or green, mainly just annoying if you make a lot of typos and rely on it to catch them, it only happens once in a while and it will usually go away for a while if I close and open it. The different fonts will usually fix themselves if I close the code window and open it again, not a big deal but it seems to pick one at random and I have a lot of odd fonts installed |

Thanks for the info. That's definitely bearable, so I'll probably upgrade in the near future.

hmm well I've had a few problems myself most of them just being annoying. I'm not exactly sure whats causing it but it seems to be vista as thats the only thing ive changed. There are three things I've had problems with
1) when i try to open GM it gives a waring that says: cannot read data for " then it opens normaly and everything is fine. 2) it hasnt happened in a while but at first when i tried to save changes to a sprite itd say "you do not have permission to do this", so id have to reclick "save changes" and itd work fine. 3) when ever i try to load a game it loads fast but then gets stuck near the end when it says its loading sounds.. even if i dont have any sounds also what he said above on the object tabs is true.. but thats not really a problem, ive never seen the text change though. |

@syth184
make sure you run Gamemaker 7 as administrator (Right click > Run as administrator) Or Turn vista's UAC off |

Ah, yes i did eventualy figure this out as i foudn this thread by searching. It worked when i turned the UAC off, but if i ran GM as an administrator, I was unable to test any of my games.
However that loading bar problem is all that seems to remain, and thats getting really annoying, it probably takes 30 second to load each time, when it could clearly not take anytime at all if it didnt load the sounds, which arent even there.. i wonder whatd happen if i added a sound for it to load? lol. i dunno |

I've noticed the blank tabs thing, which is actually very annoying for my son who doesn't really know the GML yet and needs the actions -- it doesn't bother me because I do all my games in GML.
But the thing that makes it pretty much unusable for me is the the games take an incredibly long time to load. If I make a simple game with just an empty room and that's it, it still takes minutes. And this is with quad-core computer, gaming graphics card, 4GB memory, etc. I have a crappy laptop (with WinXP) and the same game loads almost instantly. The slow loading affects both the play button while editing as well as any saved executables. It makes it unusable because when I'm programming I like to check each change as I make it, but can't afford to wait minutes for every code edit. Sounds like a few others have this problem too? It sucks because I really wanted to get back into programming games, and this has pretty much quashed any will to do so. Please fix this YoYo! It's all about how many resources the game needs to load at launch, jabelar. As for the no text tab error, it's been around since January 2007 when Vista was released. Unfortunately, it has yet to be fixed, so all we can hope is that it does get repaired for GM8 (and with that, Windows 7 64 bit compatibility too).

I run Windows 7 x64 and games load just fine, and my computer has lower specs than yours. |

Oh hey this is back. Well as an update if any of you are still having trouble. update your sound card(s). That did it for me.. sort of. it now takes about 10 seconds to load anygame regardless of size, but that is manageable

You can always run programs in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2.

I don't have the changing font or wrong syntax coloring problem, just no text being drawn on the tabs. Not a big problem, you memorize which tab has the code action pretty quickly anyway.

I used the work-around for the Failed to set data for " problem (reinstalling GM by r-clicking on the install exe and Running it as an Admin), but I still don't have the tabs showing up in 64 bit Vista, and more annoyingly I can't use the Play or Debug buttons (I have to just compile and go open the program manually). The Play button always gives me a message about how the program failed. (I've tried running GM7 in XP compatibility mode too btw).
Are they ever going to fix this? This post has been edited by angryempath: Apr 3 2009, 06:11 PM |

I have the same problems... the tabs text dont appear, a few graphical glitches in the code editor, long load times on my quad core, and it won't test games with the UAC on... most of the time. When i contacted the hlepdesk, they simply said "Game Maker 7 is not compatable with 64 bit Operating systems"....... I cant wait for GM 8, and watch, that wont be compatable with Windows 7

Hi,
I've installed GM7 in my PC (Windows Vista Enterprise 64bits) and notice an strange behavior. All default libs (move, objects, score, etc...) are appearing in blank in their respective captions tab. (look at the picture below) ![]() Has this happened with anybody else before ? Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance. Fred P.s: I already tried to reinstall GM7 several times. |
