As far as I know of I don't believe we can pick up any viruses from the GMC again, the patches have been installed so hopefully we shouldn't see another 1 soon.

That's right. Chronic has removed the IFrames, and Norton isn't showing up anymore. There's no chance on getting another virus from the board. |

QUOTE (KC_LC) Otherwise, just let it die. Why does every "completed" topic have to closed? Because otherwise people keeps on posting. |

It is one way to make sure the ones that left and didn't return like most who complained about getting viruses. I mean they get a warning about it then came on in then complain about getting something. This way the ones that was smart and that didn't have good AV protection stayed away so when they return they can see this but still I think all the people posting it will be puzzling to them to say the least. But hopefully they can weed trough all this and know the threat is gone.

Well, first off I'd like to say I appreciate the staff's quick resolving of the issue.
However... I've spent nearly all my free time the last 4 days trying to dig out all the crap that was downloaded onto my pc (including an extremely annoying trojan called Antivirus XP 2008). I sincerely hope the staff will take a lesson from this and take steps in the future to keep their customers (I did buy their software after all) out of harms way, including keeping up with all the most current software patches on the forums, the blog, and the site. It really isn't difficult for the team to patch the site on a regular basis, and I hope that they keep up with this in the future to help deter this problem from happening again. I'm not blaming the staff, but I am rather miffed they didn't do more. |

QUOTE (I did buy their software after all) No, you didn't. We are not paid, we are volunteers. You did not pay for this forum, you paid for the use of pro features in GM. QUOTE I'm not blaming the staff, but I am rather miffed they didn't do more. What more could we have done? |

I thought the staff acted as quickly as possible - they don't live on these forums.

QUOTE I'm not blaming the staff, but I am rather miffed they didn't do more. The patch that fixed the IPB vulnerability was released September 4th, The forums were exploited on September 7. This means there were only 2 business days, actually less if you take the UK time difference into account, for YYGs to become aware of the need of a patch and apply it. It would be nice if IT support people could apply patches for their OSes, Webservers, Web Services and all publicly exposed components. But that would involve shifting a large amount of technical peoples responsibility to just following the exploit sites. This involves reading volumes of information regularly. Daily, if they are to meet your unrealistic deadlines. Companies, especially small companies with limited IT, staff simply can't justify devoting large amount of budget and IT staff to constant exploit surveillance. You don't know anything about security, nor the budgetary concerns that are impacted by it. This post has been edited by NakedPaulToast: Sep 12 2008, 10:27 PM |

ya, why do all those programs try to say they are removing viruses? Antivirus XP 2008 is a virus by it'self!!!!! Firefox acts like a firewall and everything, so why do we need to download a virus like Antivirus?

Adding to NPT's, everyone entering here was warned.
This topic was kept top of the list nearly all of the time, plus several services including Chrome and Firefox warned users not to enter sites. Certain users on the other hand were intent on removing the warnings to (superficially) "fix" the problem. I don't see how YYG could be kept resposable for this. As probably you all know, all of them have their own private life, rather then being your own personal slaves as some people seem to think. It is your problem if you get infected, you are the user. Do you think you'll stay in this closed playground for ever? Learn to browse and learn the working part of the internet rather then the rubbish people themselves invent! Moreover, you are accusing them of not fixing their own servce being offered for free. You can't get more arrogant then that. This post has been edited by uuf6429: Sep 12 2008, 11:27 PM |

QUOTE @NPT: what makes you such an expert? One does not have to be an expert to see that someone else is not. Not to mention that he actually explained his reasoning entirely. You might as well be asking what makes your math teacher such an expert when they teach you something. They have knowledge and experience in the field. |

The question was more pointed to NPT (hence the '@NPT')
And the answer i was looking for wasn't philosophy, its actually pretty strait forward. |

An expert? Most of what he said just seemed like common sense to me.
But I guess if we don't agree with his points we need to attack his character somehow, right? |

QUOTE Do not try to read between the lines, there is nothing there: The questions simple. I am not attacking character in any way. I just want to know, i have observed that NPT rules quite a few points invalid with 'expert' knowledge in the field. I would simply like to know why that is. |

QUOTE I would simply like to know why that is. Because most points are irrational or illogical. It doesn't usually take an expert to invalidate those. |
