Description

Tactical Battlezone: Combat Commander is a Top Down Shooter/Real Time Strategy Hybrid. You are an All-purpose Command Unit (ACU) in a war against the Coalition.
The Coalition have the upper hand (to put it simply, control more systems) at the start of the campaign, and it will be up to you to help turn the tide of the war.
Your ACU is used to not only command your fleet, but also take part in any battle you wish to participate in. Current version features:

  • An extensive campaign with over 10 missions!
  • Two skirmish maps where you battle against one or two ai opponents!
  • A challenge mode where you attempt to survive as many waves of enemies as possible. How many can YOU survive.
  • 9 different units to create and use to win the battle!
  • 10 enemy craft to combat! (including the enemy commander)
  • Fully working base construction mechanism, with 8 different types of buildings to create

Known Bugs:
Small bug involving saving (extension keeps adding itself on. This does NOT prevent saving)
Occasionally the timeline for mission 2 freezes. (This has not happened to me yet so i can't tell what is causing it)
If anyone finds any bugs please notify me so i can attempt to fix it.

I am working extensively on this game, and i will attempt to put a new version out as frequently as possible, but I need your assistance in the forms
of commenting and rating my game. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
I should also point out that this is a fairly big game, so you might need a good computer to play it.

Additional programming and assistance by: Smarty, Kyle_Solo, Mark13673
Some ship designs based of ships from Babylon 5
Music from Freespace 2, Freelancer, Battlestar Galactica S3
Sounds from Freelancer, Counter-Strike Source
Most System names: Mass Effect, Freespace 2, Other Greek Mythology

Things implemented for next version:
Allied Dreadnought has been completed.
Damage multiplier has been added (i guess no-one commented on it so I added it)
-On this note: I also tweaked missions 5, 8 and 9, they now have less enemies that do more damage (should lead to the missions running a bit smoother)
Finally fixed the bug involving the save extension
Fixed the bug in mission 2 with the timeline freezing.
Tweaked the ai for the enemy units, should be a bit smoother when there are no stealth fighters in game

Dude, it took forever to download and when it finally finished, it took forever to load. So long did it take to load that I went and read some internet pages for a few minutes and when I came back to the game I got a 'not responding' message.

You need to trim the file size down, seriously.

how fast exactly is your computer? on mine it doesnt take 3-5 minutes like you seem to describe, its more like 30-90 seconds on mine

i will admit i probably have a few inefficiencies in my game, but the majority of the file size would come from background music

I'd say I have an average computer. I had a lot of things open at the time though.
You should realize that many users here have slower computers that won't be able to quickly download or load your game, yet alone play it.

New version out. A few major changes to the game have been made. Notably the music is now loaded externally and is downloaded via the music pack.

If anyone wants to use the music, give credit to the games/television series that are listed in 'artists'

It still won't work for me. The game takes forever to start up and eventually the loading image just went white. The file size is still a little large, even when split up. I used to have these same problems though, here's what you can do:

*Make sure every sprite/background/sound/etc. has Preload UNCHECKED. This adds to the loading time considerably.
*Wherever you can, replace sprite-based effects with particles. It may look different, but particles take up a lot less memory than a sprite animation.
*You may have too many background images. Delete some if you can and/or resize them to make them smaller.
*Like with backgrounds, size down any large sprites that don't need to be that big.
*Any where you can, size down a sprite on the game file, and make it scaled up X2 in the game. It may not look as good but it saves memory.
*The above can be used with 2 sprites of similar color. If the only thing separating a sprite from another is the color sheme, remember that you can use in-game image_blend functions to recolor them.

That's all I can think of for now.

Just found out that the campaign started at mission 1 instead of the training missions. That has been fixed now (executable link above)

I'm curious to what in my topic is repulsing everyone from downloading my game, let alone commenting?

Another quick upload is done. Several minor bugs have been fixed. There is also a new enemy (cruiser). You will encounter it on the 'Miner Famine' skirmish map.

i just encountered a major bug while testing and i am now unsure if this bug was in the version i uploaded.

To anyone who has downloaded my game i need to know if you encountered an error in the main menu, which stated an unknown variable or array index out of bounds, so i can re-upload if necessary.

thank you for the assist.

Uploaded new version:

As well as having 2 new missions there are some major changes made and some other new things added. Read the latest version info for more.

...where is the feedback. I've uploaded quite a few versions now and i haven't got a single rating from anyone yet.
Just letting anyone know that feedback is appreciated :)

A download option for the game with all resources already included in the game folder would be nice

The yellow boxes are ugly I would replace them with the same effect you use for shields or use a health bar instead

The overheating section of the tutorial was a little slow/dull you could speed up how fast it takes to overheat just for that small section

The changing shot type makes you shoot I don't like that

The game looks pretty ugly stretched over my screen

Aqua writing on "Mission Complete" screen has ugly green bits trapped inside a few as and es

When you come out of the first tutorial you're taught about movement a second time

Some of the waypoints are hidden by the hud on the second movement tutorial

And finally:

ERROR in
action number 1
of Collision Event with object mission_2_freighter
for object enemy_collision_circle:

Error in code at line 3:
if other.stealth=0 && owner.target_check=0 {owner.target_check=other.id}

at position 11: Unknown variable stealth

Other than that a pretty good game

I might do that, but it will take a lot of space and take a while to upload

The yellow boxes are ugly I would replace them with the same effect you use for shields or use a health bar instead

You might need to give me more information, do you mean the boxes around units when they're targeted?
EDIT: wait, i know what you mean now. I might use the same effect as i do with the shield.

The overheating section of the tutorial was a little slow/dull you could speed up how fast it takes to overheat just for that small section

I was planning on giving you a second weapon to speed up the process

The changing shot type makes you shoot I don't like that

i will attempt to fix that.

The game looks pretty ugly stretched over my screen

That might be a bit complicated for me to fix. I would have to change the views on all rooms (which is a lot) and scale everything in the hud, so it fits the 1024X768 (i've been a bit idiotic to round it off  )

Aqua writing on "Mission Complete" screen has ugly green bits trapped inside a few as and es

Do you mean in the drbriefing? I don't get that myself if thats the case.
EDIT: Oh, i can see them now. just a background problem easily fixed.

When you come out of the first tutorial you're taught about movement a second time

personally i thought that was sort of teaching the minimap (although i'm planning on making that shorter)

Some of the waypoints are hidden by the hud on the second movement tutorial

Will probably get rid of those

And finally:

ERROR in
action number 1
of Collision Event with object mission_2_freighter
for object enemy_collision_circle:

Error in code at line 3:
if other.stealth=0 && owner.target_check=0 {owner.target_check=other.id}

at position 11: Unknown variable stealth

That bug should be easy to fix, just need to add the variable.

Will load new version once i have fixed some of those things.
Thanks for the feedback :P

Y'know, that gets me thinking... I have "Treat uninitialised variables as 0" on in my demo. So, if push comes to shove, I can't tell if a variable is wrong or not. o.o; Guess I might when I find testers for the demo.

Downloading now, I'll edit this post when I'm done trying it. Also, I much preffered Battlezone 2. n.n;

that's that fairly old game your talking about isn't it? I got a little bit of inspiration from that

BTW you will be encountering an error for mission 2. I would wait until i have posted new version (will have fixed that.) just fixing certain things that were commented on previously (look at my topic starting post at the bottom to see what i ahve fixed.)

EDIT: Uploading in progress...

EDIT 2: upload should be done now.

my first impression of the game was pretty good. i liked the graphics and sound effects as well.

but i played no more than 2 minutes. the main reason is: the horrible controls!
i couldn't figure it out for a minute that you have to move relatively to where the ship's facing. i really would play more when you change the controls.

For the next version that i will be uploading i will have made it so you can change the controls to relative or fixed movement.

I completed mission 2 and then nothing happened

I'm not quite sure what you mean. What exactly happened? I have gotten word that the level freezes but i'm not sure what to do as it has never done this to me.

Was there by any chance in the talking text just "A". If that's the case i think i just found the problem.

BTW if that is the case the mission would have been failed anyway.

Will be uploading the new version ASAP, will edit post when done.

Yea i found what was causing the problem. It shouldn't do that anymore.
And you would have failed the mission then (not trying to sound harsh  ), the "A" was saying "Abort mission...".

New version uploaded. Along with that bug fix there are several new things (...which might of been in a previous upload i didn't mention.)
