Chara-Maker v3 Free!

This is the product of hundreds of hours of researching, brainstorming, programming, and sleeping on my keyboard. I took this project very seriously, and I'm now ready to release it to the community for free. Although there are popup ads..they are displayed every 2 minutes. This is the alternative to charging for the program. So, if you hate the ads..buy the program.

Free W/ Ads - Download!
Purchase No Ads - Buy It!

Credits:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chumbucket for his great sprite sheet, and hotshotscott for his support on this project. While I'm at it I should also thank Mark Overmars for creating GM, and everyone in the GMC who supported this project.

Create platform characters for your games. There are 44 different animations. Check out the screenshots in the demo for more information.

If you're gonna charge people for it, you should at least add variations in clothes, hair, height, weight, gender, etc.
But I got it, and it is pretty helpful in creating games. Keep up the good work.

I've not used the program, but looking at the screenshots on the purchase page, I am surprised that you didn't take more care in producing a nice GUI. If you really expect to sell the program for $16, you need to show people something nice and sharp, even if the functionality of the program isn't vastly improved by it.

FF is right. $16 is too much, not enough variation, horrible GUI simple everything, for the full version 1/10. I will not buy.

@FredFredrickson - Is the look of the GUI so important? Is it not functionality and end product over image?

Obviously, the functionality of the end product is king, but you have to look at it from a buyer's perspective. Someone who is looking for a program like yours is going to view screenshots, and make a decision right there - they either download and try it out or not. If the program looks like it was just thrown together (no matter the functionality), people aren't going to bother.

I think the idea you have here is good, and that with a little work on the GUI (and maybe a price drop to $9.99 or even $4.99), you really could sell the program.

Thanks to the insane replies I got within the first 24 hours of releasing this ... which I've been working with off and on for around 2 years now ... I'm going to have this topic closed, and C-M will never be available to the GMC. Sorry about the GUI, but I am seriously offended with some of your replies.

I hope that you don't think my comments rude - I'm just being honest and trying to help. I don't think you should close your topic too quickly here either. Wait for more responses. Even if you have to sort through a bunch of garbage, you might find some good advice for improvements here and there. You're the only one who suffers from the topic closing, after all - everyone else just moves on to the next thing.

And don't forget to take people's comments (including mine) at the GMC with a (big) grain of salt. I'm not saying that anyone above fits this description, but there are a lot of people here who love to bash games that go for sale, and a good deal of immature / jealous people as well. It builds some good character to just deal with their comments and take it in stride. :rambo

I appreciate both of your replies. You two were of the few that didn't really offend me. I'll drop the price some as I wasn't sure where to set it, but I still think I'm going to have this topic closed. It will most likely do more damage than it could ever help. I know that I personally wouldn't buy anything that someone labeled as "absolutely horrible" and suggests that the mouse is off(which is a flat out lie...i didn't do anything to the mouse) or if someone has pointed out that there are countless problems.

Oh sorry long sleeved

IrfanView is provided as FREEWARE, but only for private, no-commercial use (that means at home)
IrfanView is free for educational use (schoold and universities) and for use in charity or humanitarian organisations.

1. You use it for commercial stuff.
2. I don't think this is charity
3. Humanitarian? Nah, you ask money for it.

You should watch out what you're selling, because not everything is allowed. The program is nice, however, a bit limited to sell it for $16.00
As Fred said on the previous page, you shoul drop you price.
You even might earn more and get more customers if your price is more reasonable. And, indead, I'd rather buy the same program with a nicer GUI than this one... So you might think of that in next version you'd sell...

OK. Forgive and forget. I really think you need more than animations and hair. Have different shirts. I'd use it if you had a vest, or a jacket, or simple a long-sleeve. maybe shorts, or different pants, and sandals, maybe heels and flip-flops. If you add all that and more hair, maybe a better GUI (at least plain gradients, you can do that in GM's Image Editor) then I'd reconsider.

@photocopier - Yes, some are eligible for a free copy. The problem is most of the contributions were unusable, but I was kind enough to go ahead and give them a point towards the free copy. Contact me via MSN for your copy.
@samscam - You can buy a license for $10 or $12.
@NightStorm13 - Thank you.
@hiro-niro - What most of you had said was not criticism..it was disrespectful and impertinent.
@thetimo - Yes, contact me via MSN for your copy.

As I stated in the first post more hair and clothing will continue to be released in updates of C-M. I actually have 2 more hairstyles ready to be added. Before anyone starts complaining about me releasing an unfinished project...that's not the case at all. Just about all games/programs receive updates..some major some minor, and a content update is a logical plan of action for a program like this. Also because it seems to be the biggest issue someone is helping me redo the GUI.

It's better than anything I could make, I'll give you that.

I think it's a nice little program for someone who wants some quick sprites.

Only thing I don't like is that you can only have one style, maybe change that in an updated version?

I'll give it a 7/10

1. Not much of a customizable program; all CMv3 did was change the colors of various garments is a variety of animations.
2. The advertisements were most likely not paid for, and just copied images to give an "incentive" to users to bump the program to a paid version.
3. Perspective, shading, painting, etc. should be added if there is a price on a full version, and the free CMv3 should have more limited features so there's more reason to buy it, other than unauthorized advertisements randomly flashing.

7/10

Some of the animations were basic and a few were only 1 frame. Needs more features.

For a program that costs 16 bucks, you aren't giving us a whole lot. Then again, I don't see what the difference would be between the full version and this so-called 'demo' other than a few popups.

All in all I still believe I've developed an excellent program. Thanks to the insane replies I got within the first 24 hours of releasing this ... which I've been working with off and on for around 2 years now ... I'm going to have this topic closed, and C-M will never be available to the GMC. Sorry about the GUI, but I am seriously offended with some of your replies. Honestly, aside from Fred you can all kiss my ass.

There are a couple of problems with what you're saying here... for one, why would you work on a project like this for two years for the sole purpose of making a quick buck? What does this program offer that would make someone pay 16 bucks for it instead of going to the graphics section of this forum and asking a kind spriter who doesn't ask for anything more than to be credited for their work?

I understand you're going to want some kind of compensation for what you've created, and I understand what it feels like to be working on something a long time- my own game has taken me four years to make and I've only recently come close to finishing it. But really. The amount of time you spend working on something should not determine the price. It's more or less the quality of the work, and as far as quality goes, there are far better (may I add FREE) alternatives to the program you've created.

I think you're missing the point of GameMaker. Money shouldn't be the incentive behind an application you make with it.

Good idea, but i'm not going to buy another game-maker priced product.
The most i'll pay for anything game-maker made (or even sell) is half that price.

The ads can be considered as spam, be carfull where you go with them (it's a better idea to have limited functionality, like - only to save a maximum of one charset per month or sumpthin). :)

it's not meant to be a demo version now. it was made quite clear that none of you were willing to pay for the full version. i don't even want to argue with that anymore. the point is that i'm out a lot of money, and this program can save you MANY HOURS of sprite editing. I will continue to add more things as i've promised.. but so long as the program is free i'm not going to rush to get them out.

the ads are not spam..they are directly affiliated with my website, and with the programs that i develop. i am however considering changing the refresh rate from 2 to 3 minutes.

EDIT: oh and at whoever related this to porno popper...there are absolutely no porn ads that will ever pop up from this program. they are mostly game/computer related.

it's not meant to be a demo version now.

Not what it says on your site.

Download Demo:
http://download.pcga...-Maker-Demo.zip

Since you don't provide a site claimed to be yours, I'll have to assume http://pcgamesnow.net is your site. I didn't see anything about "Gametap" or "Hate gas prices?" on that site, so you can't say they're directly affiliated.

I still don't think pop ups are cool, even if every two or three minutes. Say I was trying out the demo when I had an emergeny to attend to and didn't think to close your program. I come back four hours later with 120 pop ups open. I know the situation would be rare, but still not cool.

"Porno popper" can be said metaphorically as well.

i understand the metaphor, but i felt the need to express that there are absolutely no affiliations with pornography in any way.

the ads are not spam

Then what do you cal the 1000 windows of Internet Explorer that froze my computer? <_< So your like, bribing us then? Gimme $16 and I won't crash your computer? If the full version is just the free version with no ads, that's a rip off. It has less stuff than in V2!! Just more crappy animations. Come on, V2 was way better than this! Add! Add! That is what you have to do. I have seen Character Makers with like 1000 hairs shoes shirts pants FACES animations, and it's free. It'd be sad if the only reason you where making this is because of money...

Rather Dissapointing, there should really be more to it. As previously suggested, perhaps more hairstyles, clothes, etc.
