I've started work on a game called "Song of Battle." It'll be mostly an MMO if I can figure out how to do that when I get Pro, being that Lite is t3h poo.
I'll try to have a large world with lots of leveling areas and PK rooms, and I also am going to try to implement an arena system, where one player can challenge another to fight no matter how far apart they are. A lot of my ideas are taken from other games I've played, namely Diablo II and Materia Magica(a MUD), but it's the fusion of the two that I think is original.
The skill system is all MUD. Practices(which you get per level-up based on how high your Wisdom stat is) will be used to increase your proficiency in skills(both physical and magical), as well as usage. You'll only be able to practice your skills up to 75% proficiency before you have to rely on usage to upgrade them. Most skills will only take place in battle, which will be text-based to account for the difference in warriors vs. mages(warriors get more attacks per round of battle, I don't know of a way to introduce that into a graphical battle system).
I have it all planned out in my head, but I think any of you have have played MUDs would agree with me that the character customization as far as skills and stats is pretty great and the PvP battle system requires a lot of skill and strategy, which is another reason I chose that.
Don't get me wrong, though, the game itself won't be a MUD, but when you enter into battle I want it to trigger a text window to pop up to display your fight.
The only bad thing with my idea is that I'm not the best at coding(far from even mediocre), but I'll overcome that. Eventually. I just wanted to know if anyone else thought it was a cool idea.
My Rpg Idea

Can we get elaboration on 'practices'? Could I envisage them, for example, as 'skill points'? I've played a few MUDs, and I have to say I still have little idea what you're talking about, so I can't imagine what it's like for people who don't even know what a MUD is.

Yeah, like skill points. Except, you can also increase your stats with them, though it costs more practices for stats than for skills.
This is my stat system..
Vitals:
HP(Hit Points)
Increases 1.5 points per vitality point per level(rounded)
END(Endurance)
Increases 1 point per vitality point per level.
Like movement points, they drain when you run, but they also drain when you perform some battle skills and when you successfully make contact with your weapon or successfully dodge.
DP(Draw Power)
Increases 1.5 points per knowledge point per level.
My magic points. Can't copy everything from something, so I renamed a stats.
Non Vitals:
WIS(Wisdom)
Dictates Practices per level.
KNO(Knowledge)
Dictates DP gain per level.
STR(Strength)
A factor in damage dealt both by skills and weapons.
VIT(Vitality)
Dictates HP and END gain per level. Maybe a factor in regeneration, dunno yet.
I'll have caps on all the stats so people don't train WIS a ton of times and become invincible. xD

I'm not so sure that if you don't know how to code that you should be trying an MMO. Also, I think that having a graphical game and then going to a purely text-based system for combat wouldn't be so cool. At least try to figure out how to make it final fantasy style where you choose your attacks and then the combat sequence is shown.
If you do figure out how to go MMO, then you will need a communication system between the two players so that one can say "brb i have 2 leak". This will keep people from getting mad at others taking too long to respond when something comes up on the other end. One last thing that I would suggest is to make a combat break system that can be used if so many seconds have passed since the other player's response. If the other player doesn't respond, you only have to hit the combat break button and you will automatically win. It's sort of like a forfeit for the other guy if he takes too long. Otherwise you will have tons of people that could potentially be stuck in a combat scene for a long time and have to quit the program and restart. This would lead to unhappy players.

Text-based combat is more active(you can cast spells while attacking physically and react in real-time by healing or casting something back)and if you aren't aware you're being attacked or aren't at the computer, you die. There's no waiting for people to come back from taking a leak.
It'll probably not appeal to everyone..but I hope that a lot of people will like it anyway.
