Bleh. I hate all these modern area shooters, especially the ones with the \'abstract graphics\' that seem to think good graphics mean just random shapes with glowy crap going on all over the place thinking they\'re being clever or \'retro\' or something. Anything with mouse aiming can go to hell too...
For me nothing beats the ORIGINAL arcade version of Robotron. None of the ports or conversions or remakes or similar games ever gave me the same sense of satisfaction as getting to a high level on that game (and no other game has made me swear as much at it\'s enemies). It\'s fast, uncomplicated and gets quite tricky fairly early on. Is the reason I have the Dual X-Arcade sticks (the best way to control Robotron using one stick for movement, and one for firing) in front of my large TV and a TV-Out cable from my video card to the TV to run the arcade rom on MAME on the PC.
I\'ve also recently downloaded the PSP version of MAME which runs Robotron beautifully too using the D-Pad for movement and the similarly structured action buttons (square, x, triangle, circle) for the firing which means I can now carry it about with me and play it whenever the hell I like. And yeah I still swear out loud at the enemies even in a public place and people around me probably think I got tourette syndrome or something.
b]Hurrican[/b] (awesome tribute to the classic game turrican /freeware)
I love Turrican games (especially Turrican II on Amiga, one of the best game soundtracks ever too) but I thought Hurrican was crap. Ugly and just simply no fun. Music was ok in places though.
Cave Story (best freeware game hands down...more than a run n gun....metroid/castlevania style with perfect controls, graphics,gameplay...simply the best freeware game)
Yeah it's decent and been ported now to a couple other systems. I'm currently playing through it on PSP and I think I'm enjoying it more than I did on PC just because I get to play it outside where I can focus better on it in peace.
beside that also check out if you dont know them already:
Contra series (nes,snes,ps2,ds / the 4th installment on the ds is great)
I thought the DS game was poor to be honest. Contra III on SNES or Contra Hardcorps on Genesis are the best ones. The NES games were pretty good too. PS2 ones average but playable enough.
Metal Slug series (arcade, ps2)
Metal Slug 3 is pretty much the only one anyone ever needs. The first two and X are good, but 4 and 5 were terrible. All of them up to 5 are easily emulated too. The GBA game was pretty decent. The upcoming DS Metal Slug 7 is looking really, really awful. What is up with those backgrounds?
Gunstar Heroes (for genesis and gba)
Genesis version is great especially in 2 player, GBA is ok. Fun but lacking.
