cause i dont like it when games are recommend by freeware sites when they are simply boring...i mean what are they thinking...
you know what i mean...so many sites with so much quantity and so less quality games...

say what you think of the other games when you have played them...

a new one:

Mechatron 2154

and here another very good shooter (its not a arena shooter, but its very fun)

Pteroglider

http://codeminion.co...ll-version-free
11 MB

graphics are pretty nice and fluid, classic 2d gameplay with 3d animated objects.
controls the glider with WASD and aim with your mouse 360°. shoot with Left Mouse Button and fire missiles with the Right Mouse Button.

This Title was a commercial title back in 2004 until the developers decided a few weeks ago to release it as freeware.
(the reasons were according to the article that it is
1) too hard (in my opinion the difficulty is ok...if your not a casual gamer who plays very seldom and no shooters then it would be difficult...but for a average talented gamer its not very hard to master the 4 levels...anyway you have 3 lives...when game over you can restart the last level with new 3 lives)
2) too high system requirements (...for casual gamers...direct x9 is required...i think today nearly every gamer have a graphics card who can handle direct x9)
3) no marketing (they made no marketing , so no one noticed this game)

Its a Zelda Dungeon Bullet Hell Shooter...its an arena shooter with lots of bullets and special abbilities....blasting enemies with various mag spells and items...first it was a commercial title but the developers released it now as freeware.
if you dont have a gamepad change first the controls into keyboard cause gamepad is set as default...on the above mentioned site, on which the game is mirrored cause of download difficulties on the original site, you will find a few infos about the game as well...on the original site all is in japanese...therefore hard to understand unless you understand japanese

Crimsonland 1.4
8 MB
Download and Review of the last Freeware Version 1.4 of Crimsonland

well...this is truly a masterpiece...as you know you will find here only full freeware versions and therefore i didnt mentioned this game earlier cause i thought it was commercial...but it was freeware untile version 1.4 which you can download on the above mentioned site...so whats great about this game?
the gameplay, the controls, the smooth graphics, the 17 weapons (shotgun rules) and the upgrades which you can get when you killed enough in exchange with your experience points (just click right mouse button to choose an upgrade when in the right corner appears the level up info)...
moreover you can play this game with your buddy on the 2 player coop mode...fun stuff...
the game offers fluid gameplay, good sound and a good amount of blood...
so try it out its really worth it...

maybe you want to get the 2.0 version which is distributed on the net in a trial version which offers 1 hour of full gameplay...costs about 20 bucks...it offers better graphics, more options, more game modes, more weapons, more enemies, more landscape options and levels...

Neocron Arcade - The N.M.E. Project
35 MB
http://ng.neocron.com/index.php?id=105

a well made top down shooter...action scrolls so its not limited to one single screen...
therefore not an arena shooter...but a top down shooter.
good controls and fluid gameplay...graphics are very good for a 2d top down shooter...if you hold your fire and keep moving you can walk and firing in the same direction...
you can also use a slow-motion effect....can be refilled by killing enemies...
plus you can throw grenades and get different weapons during the game...
the game contains 4 levels with storyline...

yeah soldat is a great game.
i would consider it as a sideview run n gun multiplayer action game.

an arena shooter does not require mulitplayer.
heres a short description of arena shooters as well as run n guns
http://en.wikipedia....ctional_shooter

http://en.wikipedia...._up#Run_and_gun

it seems that you also like the RUN AND GUN genre and therefore you will probably enjoy these games:

Hurrican (awesome tribute to the classic game turrican /freeware)
http://turrican.game.../hurrican_site/

TAGAP (run n gun game with good graphics but the movement is a bit slow...beside that good game /freeware)
http://www.tagap.net/

Streambolt Desero (very good run n gun but its very short.../ freeware)
http://indygamer.blo...olt-desero.html

Noitu Love 2 - Devolution (fantastic sidescrolling action with great graphics and smooth gameplay/demo available)
http://www.konjak.org/g_noitu2.html

Cave Story (best freeware game hands down...more than a run n gun....metroid/castlevania style with perfect controls, graphics,gameplay...simply the best freeware game)
http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/

beside that also check out if you dont know them already:

Contra series (nes,snes,ps2,ds / the 4th installment on the ds is great)
Metal Slug series (arcade, ps2)
Gunstar Heroes (for genesis and gba)

well well...a new fine addition in the arena shooter section:
GlobotWars (in the vein of geometry wars/grid wars)

GlobotWars Final Edition
1 MB
http://www.tphf.karoo.net/pc.htm

fun gameplay, smooth action and 40 levels...i made it to the 30 level with the second try)

with 40 levels (level save:you can start from every level which you have finished...)
with energy (if a enemy touches you you loose energy instead loosing a life)
with bosses every 10th level
with different powerups

controls:
with mouse (you right click on the screen and your ship moves toward this direction while you can shoot with left mouse button)

keyboard (moving with arrow keys and shooting with s,z,x,d + space for bomb)

or gamepad controls (moving with digital pad and shooting with buttons)

Yeah... Well it kinda is an area shooter if you think about it...

Depends on what mode you play though. Realistic Survival mode is more of like Counterstrike style, but deathmatch on a small map is basically an arena shooter...

And cave story is cool... Heh... It's a little odd at times to me because I'm not too into the strangeness that exists in Anime but a cool game nontheless... I just find the whole Bunny/Person thing a little weird or whatever goes on in this game... And how is Sue's brother a human and she is one of those things(forgot the name...)

LOL I really like Balrog though, he's like a toaster oven or something, it's funny...

Bleh. I hate all these modern area shooters, especially the ones with the \'abstract graphics\' that seem to think good graphics mean just random shapes with glowy crap going on all over the place thinking they\'re being clever or \'retro\' or something. Anything with mouse aiming can go to hell too...

For me nothing beats the ORIGINAL arcade version of Robotron. None of the ports or conversions or remakes or similar games ever gave me the same sense of satisfaction as getting to a high level on that game (and no other game has made me swear as much at it\'s enemies). It\'s fast, uncomplicated and gets quite tricky fairly early on. Is the reason I have the Dual X-Arcade sticks (the best way to control Robotron using one stick for movement, and one for firing) in front of my large TV and a TV-Out cable from my video card to the TV to run the arcade rom on MAME on the PC.

I\'ve also recently downloaded the PSP version of MAME which runs Robotron beautifully too using the D-Pad for movement and the similarly structured action buttons (square, x, triangle, circle) for the firing which means I can now carry it about with me and play it whenever the hell I like. And yeah I still swear out loud at the enemies even in a public place and people around me probably think I got tourette syndrome or something.

b]Hurrican (awesome tribute to the classic game turrican /freeware)
http://turrican.gamevoice.de/hurrican_site/

I love Turrican games (especially Turrican II on Amiga, one of the best game soundtracks ever too) but I thought Hurrican was crap. Ugly and just simply no fun. Music was ok in places though.

Cave Story (best freeware game hands down...more than a run n gun....metroid/castlevania style with perfect controls, graphics,gameplay...simply the best freeware game)
http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/

Yeah it's decent and been ported now to a couple other systems. I'm currently playing through it on PSP and I think I'm enjoying it more than I did on PC just because I get to play it outside where I can focus better on it in peace.

beside that also check out if you dont know them already:
Contra series (nes,snes,ps2,ds / the 4th installment on the ds is great)

I thought the DS game was poor to be honest. Contra III on SNES or Contra Hardcorps on Genesis are the best ones. The NES games were pretty good too. PS2 ones average but playable enough.

Metal Slug series (arcade, ps2)

Metal Slug 3 is pretty much the only one anyone ever needs. The first two and X are good, but 4 and 5 were terrible. All of them up to 5 are easily emulated too. The GBA game was pretty decent. The upcoming DS Metal Slug 7 is looking really, really awful. What is up with those backgrounds?

Gunstar Heroes (for genesis and gba)

Genesis version is great especially in 2 player, GBA is ok. Fun but lacking.

long post which reflects your opinion. good.
i myself love the dual analog gameplay or wasd with mouse. :rambo

im interested what you think about mechatron 2154.
give it a try and say what you think.
in my opinion its a good remake but maybe you also dislike it :GM122:

yeah contra 3 and the 2 nes versions are awesome.
contra hardcorps ...do you know the japan version is easier cause yo dont die after one hit...i think you have 3 energy bars :GM048:
also rented the ps2 contra shattered soldier and its also a good game (classic 2d gameplay with 3d graphics)
the other ps1 contras are crap.

metal slug x mixes metal slug games right?
when i remember right then metal slug 2 had it problems with slowdowns and stuff?

yeah cave story rocks :GM006:

I think metal slug X is just metal slug 2 but maybe with improvements of some sort... I saw no differences when playing them except for maybe the title screens and stuff. The game itself was the same...

Heh I already beat cave story in 1 day, but that was the bad ending. Good thing I can just say no to the professor dude and the game continues so I can keep playing... And I figured out that the mimigas are dogs not rabbits. LOL anime is SOOO weird...

---SPOILER---
OMFG no save after beating misery?!?!?!?! I had like 5 health left and had to fight the doctor!!!! BS!!!!
---SPOILER OVER---

OK today I beat it finally. I was able to beat the final bosses very easily after a couple retries... And I also remembered I had the life jar still... And the characters stopped seeming weird to me. It was kinda cool now that I think about it... Wow though, took me only 2 days. I really like those kinds of games like Soldexus, Untitled Story, Metroid, and now this game... Haven't gotten too into Castelvania. Well I did beat the 3rd on on SNES which was an awesome game, but not in the same style...

a little update :P

DOU
4 MB
http://www.binaryzoo...s/duo/index.htm

not an arena shooter but a great innovative shooter. (so ithought i make a little exception and list this game anyways)
you can move left and right while you are fixated on the middle of the screen (or on the bottom) , shoot the enemies and gain powerups while watching all the eye candy stuff.
while you shoot in both directions (with different ammo) at the same time you can turn your ship by presing the right mouse button.
(from the same team that made the excellent arena shooter echoes)

Posted Image

mono
5 MB
http://www.binaryzoo.../mono/index.htm

arena shooter with smooth controls and a special mission:
shoot the colored circles so they will left a paint mark.
color the whole screen that way and get powerups.
(from the same team that made the excellent arena shooter echoes)

Warning Forever
1 MB
http://www18.big.or.jp/~hikoza/Prod/

a great boss fighting shooter.
only you against a big boss.
movement with arrow keys.shoot with Z, move slowly with X and activate aiming with D.
when you pushed D you can now move around with arrow keys and set your fire direction.
when you now push fire you shoot fixated at this direction while you can move around the boss.

gamepad is also supported.

Gamma Bros
20 MB
http://pixeljam.com/gammabros/

(for the case that the original site is down heres a mirror)
http://www.tucows.com/preview/504034

well this is a great pixelated retro shooter. its not an arena shooter but it has some similarities with the movement and shooting scheme.

you can fire with wasd and move with arrow keys + space for pause and to see your currenty stats (or if you prefer it you can change it i the options menu)

i have beaten this game in about 30-40 minutes (havent looked exactly on the clock but i think this time i have needed).

so...it is a very funny game.

the game offers great playability through the good controls and variety through the different enemies (with cool and different movemen).

you collect coins to buy stuff like weapon upgrades and new ships and powerups...in the game itself you can also find weapon, speed upgrades, energy and bombs. so whats up with the bros? when your energy is empty your ship and you leav it with some jetpack now comes your bro' and you can take his ship. in the meanwhile its possible that you collect another ship so that your bro' has also a ship again. i was nearly destoryed by the last boss battle but managed to save the world and destroyed him.

this game is coded in flash and therefore it could

you can check alsothe info in the beginning to see which weapons and upgrades you can get.

also you can type in a password and hit enter to go to a specific level (if you were destroyed and dont want to start from the beginning)

for this case i have made a screenshot with the passwords (this screen will be shown when you have beaten the game)

HollowPoint
30 MB
(requires NET 2.0 or later + XNA 2.0 which is included in the installer)
http://www.digipen.e...t/download.html

you play as a turtle with a gun on your back and try to escape the laboratory where you were created....this game seems to be fun but unfortunately my machine cannot handle it....
the start screen appears and when i hit "quickplay" and hit continue the screen freezes.
a possible reason could be that my graphics card isnt shader 2.0 compatible...
however maybe this game runs on some of your machines...if thats the case report if this game is good.

anyways...the production values seems pretty good according to the screens and the 2 ingame videoclips which can be watched on the website...

3 new entrys:

2 remakes of the classic game thrust!
(no arena shooters...but hey the games are great, especially gravitron)

->gravitron
->thrust extreme

i prefer gravitron!

and 1 geometry wars clone.
->grid assault

Gravitron
6 MB
http://xout.blackene.../Gravitron.html

so whats going on here. classic gameplay and good controls combined with nice graphics. i configured it that way:
movement with left and right arrows and thrust with up arrow.
shoot with A and shield with S. but its up to you what controls you prefer.
the first levels are easy...the later levels becomes harder and harder, but not unfair.

so your mission is:
1.)collect the little people by landing carefully on the ground
2.)shoot the enemies.
3.)if you want you can fill up your fuel by thrusting carefully beside the fuel tank and activate shield. so the fuel wll be transfered to your ship. dont touch the tank.
3.)destroy the base (countdown begins) and thrust into space

Posted Image

Thrust Extreme
3 MB
http://wiebo.wordpre...om/my-pc-games/

this game is in the same vein but its not similar.
so...basically same as above but you have also to collect a pod by activating your shield when you are close enough. with the pod on your rope its extreme hard to control cause it swings and when it hits anything it explodes...and so you.

1.)shoot enemies
2.)maybe fill up your tank by thrusting carefully beside the fuel tank while you activate your shield. dont touch the tank.
3.)collect the pod by actating shield.
4.)destroy base. (countdown begins)
5.)escape into space

Posted Image

additionally heres - i think - the most exact geometry wars clone for pc

Grid Assault
5 MB
http://members.home.nl/wdw/grid.html

what to say. great game. geometry wars clone. offers good playability with the dual analog gamepad.
but theres one negative point: its timed and will stop after 6 miutes of gameplay.
i think its because to get not involved into copyright infringements.

Survival Crisis Z
8 MB
http://skasoftware.com/

wohooo...lean back guys i have probably found the best free bloody zombie killing survival game ...top down isometric graphics....hm is it fun to kill these zombies in this game you may ask....?
it is...! just move with wasd through the streets , aim with your mouse and kill in a splattertastic way...you will find different weapons to survive the zombie hordes and you will meet different zombies...slower and faster...
the movement was a bit awkward (for me) in the beginning cause of the iso perspective...pushing W let you move in the upper right direction...about 45 degree...but after a few minutes you get used to...
oh and i recommend in the control settings "absolute + mouse"

i have tested only the arcade mode so far ...which offers arcade action in real time...
but i think there is also a mode with more tactical and rpg elements.

this game was sold for about 10$ earlier but is now freeware.

so...enough talk her...watch the videoclip and check it out

(download info: scroll down then you see in the right a play offline headline, click "download this game now")

another enjoyable arena shooter with special movement:
control your constantly rotating and shooting ship with arrow keys and stop the shooting direction by hitting Z...so you can shoot straight. release the Z key for rotating again.

in the first 6 levels you have to survive for 30 seconds...then defeat the boss within 30 seconds...easy.
after you have finished them play the "hard levels" in which you also have to survive for 30 seconds...and they are more a challenge.

then there are 6 special modes(two minutes, waves, double fire, bombs, bullet hell, insane) to unlock.

and there is also a online hi score:

currently im place 6 in the world with 399.700 :)
