Well, I played the new version, and I was utterly amazed at how smooth and... well... NICE it was! Graphics stunning, gameplay was pretty nice too... the only problem I could find was when I shot the little metal things on the first level, the ricochet sound was so loud I had to turn the speakers down so quietly I couldn't hear the music. Anyway, I was just about to go on here to comment, when I missed one of the aliens on level 2, and hit a large crumpled metal thingy... Anyway, even with my speakers on minimum, the buzzing sound it made was deafening, AND it looped it for a full 14 minutes 47 seconds while the computer hung unresponsive... eventually I gave up and restarted. Personally I think it's a great game beside the glitches, so simply fix those and you'll have a game well worth the 18 Mb filesize!

EDIT: Final gripe: you STILL haven't fixed the intro texture =P. Textures need to be powers of 2 in width and height to be fully compatible, what you have currently is a little wedge-shaped planet:

Thanks for the feedback. I'm probably going to romove the metal things entirely, so it shouldn't be too big a problem in the future. The thing on level two is probably related to the glitch clystron talked about - what weapon were you using?

I've redone the weapon system in preparation for pickups and ammo limits, the latter of which complete. I've added an ionic laser weapon, and am planning on an ionic tactical-nuclear laser too, in addition to the shotgun none of you have seen.

I'm going to end this update (on what's going on) with a good note for once. I've fixed my desktop PC, which is great, because I won't have to be driving my brother insane asking him if I can work on WIO. Woot. Now all that's left to do is get him to let me get WIO onto this PC... hmm. lol, So for now I'll be working on the new logo in blender. I'll be able to fix that missing apostrophe in it's. lol.

Great to hear you got your computer working again!

I was using the assault rifle; it actually probably was a similar or the same glitch.

Okay, it's been a while, and this topic is dying.

I've got a lot done, so I guess the next update doesn't need a new level. I'll upload it as soon as I get access to my computer again, maybe with a mock-level showing off the jeep, shotgun, laser, and ally AI.

I just played this. It's very nice, I liked the graphics a lot! However, I hated the movement, it almost made it unplayable. I much prefer S always making you go down, D always going right, etc... The strange control scheme made trying to run away or dodge hard, and I kept running into walls. Also the text box seems a little small. Other then that, very nice!

W00T, UPDATE! FINALLY!

While this update lacks the absolute movement, cutscenes, a third level and other features I've been... Uhh... talking about, optimizations and getting rid of things that the game would be better off without have made it run significantly faster. Also, ammo limits and reloading have been implemented and the ranged enemies now have a melee attack and behave more like those wasp things.

Filefront link.

I went into a lot more detail in the Message from MMORPGguy menu thingy. So... Uhh... In summary:
- New ranged enemy AI
- Removed placeholder cutscene
- Optimizations
- Menu navigable with mouse
- Ammo limits and reloading
- The new logo took a long time to render because of the high resolution. Here's the full wallpaper sized one, if anyone's interested.

W00T, UPDATE! FINALLY!

Hell yeah "finally" :)

While this update lacks the absolute movement [...]

NOOOOOOoooo... Bad MMORPGguy! Bad MMORPGguy!

Filefront link.

Just thought I'd mention that the link in that post does not send me to the download page, but the "join" page instead. Don't know about everyone else.
The link in the first post works, though, and I'm downloading the new version now.

Edit:

I like the new version of the big red aliens.
The game performs much better now.
Loading the 2nd level is quicker, too. And I haven't had any crashes yet. Well done :D

Suggestions:

- It's great that you can now navigate the menu with the mouse, but you still have to use the keyboard to change the options. May I suggest that you use mouse buttons 1 & 2 to decrease & increase the values? (Also assigning the mousewheel to this would be a nice touch). And of course add a "back" button on each page.

- He still strafes in the wrong direction when backstepping. This won't be an issue when you enable the player to switch to absolute movement, but for those who prefer relative movement it might be frustrating that he strafes like that.

- Show the controls in-game or include a text file with each release so people don't have to rely on your thread for that kind of info. Besides, the controls in the first post are only for the newest version ;)

- I couldn't find a health indicator anywhere on the HUD. Will there be one?

- The laser weapon is pretty cool. Although, it's a bit too powerful maybe. By the way, when you get to level 2 you no longer have it. Why not? Was it available in the first level for testing purposes only?

- It would be nice if you could make the music on the 2nd level loop seamlessly.

- Prompt before ending current game and before exiting to Windows.

Please, for the love of [insert something here that you cherish], add absolute movement to the next version. Thanks.

Keep up the good work.

This kind of strafe is uncomfortable and moving is not fine. You should make WSAD for moving forward, back, left, right not moving in mouse direction.

Wait, the laser's still in there? I meant to take it out. I guess that's okay for now. Glad to hear it's running faster. Now, responses to your suggestions. In order:

- I should do this. Yeah.

- Oops.

- Can't believe I hadn't done this already. Lol.

- It's because you don't have health. In the next level, you have a generic awesome looking forcefield thing that gets a bar though.

- Don't feel like quoting myself. Lol.

- It would. I might do that.

- Yeah, uhh, good idea. Maybe a whole pause menu would be nice.

- Right... uhh... ASAP.

This kind of strafe is uncomfortable and moving is not fine. You should make WSAD for moving forward, back, left, right not moving in mouse direction.

Here we go again, primary source of constructive criticism: movement.

Lol, I might even enter this to comp04. I doubt it'd be finished, though. And OMGWTFBBQLAGG? Well... Okay. What are your specs? I might be able to get some recommended requirements or something up.

Okay, uhh, I might release a small update with absolute movement and fixed strafing. Maybe I'll take the laser out too, who knows.

Okay, another update. 0.5.0.0. Link.

What's new?
- More optimizations.
- Option for absolute movement in options - FINALLY! took less than an hour too. I can't believe I hadn't done it before.

Some of the following may not make complete sense at the current point of the story. Hmm. Work it out when level 4/5 rolls out.
- Laser weapon, not a leak this time.
- An energy sheildy thing.
- Chapter 3: Rapture. Probably the shortest level I'll make. Has an awesome new enemy.
- A cutscene.

Right now what I'm most concerned about is whether the little girl in chapter three looks like she's 6 years old, and if she actually looks like a girl. lol.

So... enjoy. Now that controls are the way they are, I see no need for complainants. Hopefully another issue will crop up, so I can make this game better.

Yaay, absolute movement! Well, I'd really like to play this, but the filefront link won't work for me :)
Any chance you could post a mirror?

Works for me, but sure, I'll try. It takes about 10 minutes to upload though, so... Uhh... Patience.

edit: Gah, internet disconnected mid-upload. Gonna take longer than anticipated.

edt2: 48%...

edit3: Here it is.

Complaints? I'm good at complaining. You can count on me!

Good to hear that you've updated the game.
I have to wait till I get home from college before I can play it, though.

Looking forward to it.

OK, played it. It's a lot better! Good job. The amount of lag was massively reduced. I just got it a little in the second level, but it definitely wasn't a big deal.
The third level was a little weird though. I wasn't quite sure what was going on with the energy shield. And I thought the girl was an adult heh. I could tell it was a she at least.
Also I noticed you can't access the absolute movement option with the arrow keys, you have to use the mouse, which confused me a little.
Again, good job!

Whatever.

Heh, yeah, the storyline's a little sketchy right now, with the whole sudden gain of the laser and that shield. Level design, in my opinion, is pretty bad too, except for the second level. I should fix this, and the terrible dialouge.

Maybe there'll be cutscenes in the next update. I'll do them like the one in level three... Yeah.

Got a long long series of glitches. I beat the game, so I decided to try playing it again(after I figured out how to turn on absolute movement, which was a lifesaver literally) and, when I got to the chopper on the first level I got a bunch of errors that seemed to all be related to variable IDs. Maybe you neglected to re-add a certain object when starting the game over again...?

I don't know what's wrong there, it works fine for me and everyone else. Try playing it again or something.

edit: maybe try extracting everything?

when starting the game over again...?

Wait, what? When I started it over again (over a year ago now) It was 100% from scratch. So... lol.

Well, there doesn't seem to be a problem. It's probably related to that assault rifle problem or something, which you can solve with a simple game restart.

But yeah, I'm going to have to fix this eventually.
