UPDATED!

The Power is a platform/adventure game with the focus on exploration and action,no puzzles.It has 5 different locations on one planet,many weapons,items and upgrades.There are also plenty of boss fights and 2 different endings depending if you get all items or not.The graphics style and the game overall is simplistic but still i hope you have a good time.

Here is the updates list :

- All room speeds changed from 30 to 60 , as a result nearly every object had to be edited , all speeds had to be reduced , all alarm timers had to be increased , all sprite speeds had to be increased , many animations needed additional images . A room speed of 60 makes the game run smoother and everything looks way better because of this .
- The controls have been greatly improved , first we had : one button for every selection on the main menu and in game options , now we just select options with arrows up and down and enter .We also had one button for every weapon and item on the game weirdly placed in the middle of the keyboard ( C V B N ) now we have one primary fire button and one secondary fire button and you just press down to select secondary weapons .
- I cleaned trough the code of almost every object eliminating unnecessary actions and variables .
- Reduced the annoyance level of some enemies .
- First weapon now has automatic fire .
- Added variable jump height .
- Room transition objects reduced from over a hundred to just 4 .
- Minor sprite edits and additions .
- Minor sound edits and additions .
- Minor bug corrections .
- Minor text edits .

I like the graphics style of this game. I'll edit when played.

If this wasn't inspired by Metroid, I'm an idiot.

I'll rate it when I get further, I found the mines and I can't beat this boss.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot about replying.

This game was awesome way back when I played it. 10/10

The graphics are really cool, and the gameplay reminds me of metroid. This is a fun game, but I found it kind of hard, maybe its just me though. Great game.

Maybe you rather play this kind of games with a controller.Ever heard of Joy to Key?

I had a realy nice time playing thru this game, spend some hours for 2 nights and finished it, the simple style is just eyecandy, lovely to watch and play ..

There was once that I managed to get stuck while using the rope, but I wasn't able to get stuck again the same way. Anyway, it's just to Esc and relead last save, so it didn't bother me mutch (the rope line was too close to a block, so I got stuck in it as it tried to pull me thru it)..

I'm sure I could have saved myself some hours if I had gone back to last save and carefully tried to reach the boss .. but yeah, seems that I love to reach them with low health, forced to kill foe by stratergy ^^

Mt:I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the game so much.About that key_map code,seems like i will have to learn GML sooner or later.i'm going to try but i don't promise anything.

FoxInABox:Thanks for the good feedback.I thought I got rid of the hook problem,you do have the latest version of the game right?Looks like i'm going to have to update this game.Oh,well,i'm still learning,my next game will be at least a month on testing.

I loved the look of this game. The transparency works really really well.

If there was one thing that put me off (but only a little) was......

"The instructions were short sentences.Is this intentional.There seemed to be no spaces after the punctuation.It proved hard to read."

I loved the design though. The trees, baddies etc.

Ha, I'm glad to hear you like my games! They don't seem to be as popular here as in non-gm communities.

Anyway, if you want some tips for improving the game (or your future games) I'd say that you've pinned down one out of three important things; your game's got a rather unique style. There are obviously a few technical flaws, although I didn't think they affected the experience too much for me. However, those aren't as important. Anyone can polish a game.

What's more important is that your game seems to lack a unique atmosphere/story/setting (or whatever you want to call it). It doesn't give me much of a reason to play the game through, aside from looking at the pretty graphics and battling all them bosses. If you actually thought of an interesting intrigue that would keep the player wondering what'll happen next, then I think the game would've pulled in a lot more players.

Finally, the gameplay mechanics were pretty standard. There were no "Wow, I haven't seen any game do this before!" moments, I didn't really see anything that was new even for a platform explorer.

Anyways, one of three is more than enough for me. This is definitely among (if not) the best GM game I've played so far this year.

10to2:Thanks for giving my game a try.I think the problem with the text is that i used "impact" fonts which are drawn very close together.Sorry about that,but i will keep this in mind if i do an update to the game.

cactus:Thanks for telling me about this 3 very important things.Well,at least i got style,jeje,i guess thats good.I most admit that making graphics and animations is what i enjoy the most of game making I specially like making tilesets.

About the technical aspect,yes,I know the game is very minimal on the technical aspect.In part is because i'm still using D&D i guess and i kept the game minimal to make sure i will be able to finish it.But i am aware that "unique" and "original" are important things to make my games stand out from the rest.I will try some of my own inventions in the future and as i get more experienced.

I thought my little story was at least passable.I thought people were going to like to go on so they could learn what is this "The Power" that everyone keeps talking about.Well,i guess is not the best story,I'm really not a good story teller, I'm aware of that.I will try harder the next time i do a game with a story.

Thank you very much cactus for taking the time to share this important aspects of game making with me.This is the kind of feedback that truly helps one to grow as a game maker and one can only get better,right?Thanks a lot!

Glad to see more people appreciating this game.
One more small comment from me:
I believe what is causing the text to be awkward to read is you tendency to *not include a space after a fulls stop*.
Some people are confused when sentences "run together" like that.

It is standard practice to do it

"like this. You see?"

Rather than
"like this.You see?"

always put a "space" after a full stop.

(Funnily enough your habit is something I used to do myself smile.gif it can can be hard to change!

redvein:to beat those guys just put 4 missiles in each ones head,thats all it takes.If you stand on a higher platform than them and just keep shooting chances are you will hit them almost all the time.If you have at least 160 hp and 25 missiles you should be able to beat all those guardians with little problems.if you think the keyboard is the problem try Joy to Key.
