Hi everyone, me and a friend are thinking of making an RPG game, but we are not sure what view to make the game in, we want to make it 2d for now and so are thinking of just three different views we could use

Top down view - Zelda

Platform - side view

Isometric view

So, my question is, what game view would you prefer, would you rather play a rpg with the graphics top down, or side view?

I myself would prefer a side view, platform rpg, but i want to know what everyone else thinks

Thanks

By top down, you mean like Zelda? If so thats the one i prefer . Altho side view is pretty good (like Castlevania) but things can get real complicating. :). That my oppinion =D

To me it doesn't matter, what matters more is whether the game is well-made.

But platform view is a strange choice for an rpg, and I think might be rather limiting. I'd say go top-down.

Why not make it isometric? That's a combination of the two .

Isometric would be good, though it is not what we were told to suggest..

Isometric is probably the best alternative to 3D, but it is quite hard to program if you aren't that good with GM. Zelda/Pokemon view is also a valid option, this let you combine top-down and platformer but still keep the programming and spriting fairly simple. Else than that: top-down.

The side-view thing is very interesting, but seems very hard to pull off compared to top-down.

I would do it Zelda style. It would be easier than side view.

Good luck if you're going to make a Platform view RPG.

You need to make AI that knows when, where, and how to jump, smooth platforming, and a way to shoot things at angles and have gravity act on it and such. All doing that in a simple and smoother manner, plus all the other RPG concepts. That is, unless you decide to use the greatly overused turn based battle system.

i say 3/4ths perspective, which is the zelda style top down. it works well for RPG. platform is cool but you have to be in the right mood for it.. and castlevania is the noly game iv seen do a platformm RPG well

Thanks for all your comments so far, to be honest i didn't think of the isometric view, and that could be an option as well, as it would give for better graphics, if there well designed, and like a few of you have been saying, maybe easier to code, so i think i will add isometric view to the list of possible choices, so

Top down - Zelda view

Platform - side view

Isometric view

That list should be more like:
Top down (directly above)

Zelda view

Platform

Isometric

BTW: you should check out my topic Replacement for 3D linked to in my signature :P

thanks for the reply, your topic has helped alot, so now i ask what do you prefer out of the three(four) choices, not what you think would be best, but what would you like to see, also what would you like to see in an rpg game(or mmorpg) in the choice of view you have choosen

*Hey I finally logged in  *

Anyway allow me to give everyone more detail.
Its not a remake of any sort it has custom sprites, sounds origional ideas and aspects.
The engine is also beeing made from scratch.

Some unique aspects are battle engine, characters, weapons, experience levels and much much more.

Well basically we have 3 views we can`t decide on.

Zelda type topdown
Platform
Isometric

We want to know which view do you prefer concidering that this is a RPG.
We talked quite some time on the views and why we want them, but its just not good enough they all have good and weak aspects in them.

(They will not be mentioned since we want to know which do you prefer not why we want it.)

Also once this is done I will write the 3D game from scratch (again) with a 3rd person view.

OK so theres more info about this RPG maby you are more likely to post your opinion :P
