Caveman Craig is a unique, humorous sim game in which you need to breed, train, and protect other cavemen, who perform various tasks to keep your cave alive and thriving. You need to protect your cave from various threats such as carnivores, opposing cavemen tribes, and ultimately, the Tyrannosaurus Rex. As your cave grows, you will receive bonuses, larger threats, and as a result the game will become more tense and fast-paced. The game was created in GM 7.0.

This game is excelent! I like the concept alot and the game mechanics are awesome put too.
The graphics are very well done, there could be more work done on polishing (the cavemen look lifeless when they gather/prepare) but it's ok.
I found the sounds very funny especially when the cavemen learn something new.
This is very addictive game and it's the best GM game I played.

This is really nice, but could still use some polish.

My main gripe is that you can quite easily get to a certain point, having fun along the way, and then suddenly you get attacked by about ten of the rival tribe who just decimate your entire clan, no matter how many hunters you have. At least, thats what happened each time i played. I played three times.

Also, it would be good if the dinosaurs (the triceratops and raptors in particular) made a different sound when they died than when they appeared. Because i kept rushin out to kill raptors, only to discover they were already dead!!

Apart from that, this game is excellent. As ever, it would be good if there was more to do and more features, but it is fine as it is.

Great game, didn't make it to meet anything aside from raptor, I always run out of hunter and then he gets me and I get killed <_<

Can't say a bad word about this game, it's in the top of the best amateurs games I've ever played, gratz dude!

5/5 ofc!

EDIT
ok I know about the tap now! Can survive those raptor attacks

Very nice polished game. The only flaw is that it tends to become a bit boring after a while.

I give it 8 out of 10

Not true. Staff members can't enter the contest. Mods aren't necessarily staff members. At least, I am not.

My main gripe is that you can quite easily get to a certain point, having fun along the way, and then suddenly you get attacked by about ten of the rival tribe who just decimate your entire clan, no matter how many hunters you have. At least, thats what happened each time i played. I played three times.

There are a few little tactics that make the game easier. Particularly, for growth, teaching some preparers and gatherers only some techniques will help distribute the preparing of carcasses and berries more, allowing you to get the most out of both food methods. I know many people who have managed to play a game for over an hour.

Thankyou all very very much for your support and comments. I've just released version 1.2, which attends to suggestions made by the community. Chickenfeed, I'm trying to get your suggestion about death sounds implemented for 1.3.

Cool. I've played it a couple more times since. The problem definitely lies with those rival tribesmen. I don't know if its just me!!!

I had 18 hunters, 5 gatherers and 4 preparers. A group of about eight of those b**stards came along, and all of a sudden i was left with only 4 hunters.

But its not enough to put me off!!!

It just looks so nice and is replayable even though i know i'm just going to get massacred by those evil cavemen.

I never rated it before, but I'll say......8/10

I love this game, and am going to tell my real-world friends about it.

My only complaint:

Why do all of your games take so much memory and processor speed?

I feel like, I download a game, and to play it, I have to turn off every cool effect. Even then, the cavemen slow down, and my fps goes to 29/60 in Conflict Arcade.

Best GMC game I've ever played! It's amazing! Maybe you could add saber-toothed cats, or a warrior class that can kill the rival tribe much better than normal, but can't gather or prepare or hunt.

The game is absolutely fantastic and I still maintain the belief that this is destined to be a classic. I believe it's a real contender for the 1st prize in the Competition; the formula is simple yet addictive, the graphics are fantastic (tip of the hat to Tim) and the sounds are very good also. The only gripe I have with the game is that once you begin to accumulate more cavemen the attacks seem to become more frequent, knocking you back again while the attacks subside, meaning the gameplay takes a long time to show you all its features and the hard-work put into it.
Having played for about 45mins I still am yet to see the Tyranossaurus Rex.. ;)

Hahaha, I was laughing about that myself. It's ok with C:A because I was aiming for a high-end quality game that did slow down lower-end PC's down. The main thing that really slowed it down though was the AI - it was the first proper AI I'd ever really programmed. As with Caveman Craig, we had to develop the whole thing in 30 days and there wasn't much time for optimisation. Again, though, I blame the AI. I'm not too great at it.

This is my 500th post!#

Anyway, just to suggest something. Why can't the T-Rex attack rival cavemen? I was being attacked by so many cavemen that my village was destroyed and I had to hold <Space> just to survive. So while holding it down a T-Rex attacks and marches straight past the rival cavemen so it can eat me.. I didn't think a dinosaur was so picky.. <_<

That was an amazing experience. In all my years, this surpasses almost all of the games I've played on the GMC. My hat goes off to the team that crafted this masterpiece. Thank you for bringing this commercial quality game here. I truly hope you do well in the competition.

My only complaint is:

Rival cavemen should be attacked by the dinos, as well. I don't know if this was scripted or not, but my first encounter with a rival tribe happened at the same time as a massive dinosaur attack and my tribe was completely decimated within a minute or so.

Once again, thank you for sharing such a great experience with us!

Good game 9/10
Only problem is when you don't have any hunters when they all die it's impossible to stop getting eaten by the raptor
I also don't like how the invaders go straight for the preparers it's kind of annoying.

Great game! I played it twice, I died both by 45 minutes though. The best I had was 7 hunters, 3 gatherers, and 3 preparers. The attack that wiped me first was a t-rex... the second was...

3 triceratops, 10 rival cavemen, and about 5 of the....red ones.

I will play again after you get a few more versions out.

Tap space rapidly while being eaten by the raptor, and he lets go of you. Also, the invaders (rival cavemen) don't go straight for the preparers. It's just that the preparers don't move, while the gatherers and hunters are running around. So the only invaders that stand still are those hitting the preparers and so it'll feel like that's all they're fighting.

How many unlockables are there? I have target, fire for cooking, and got the extra plants.

There's another 4 unlockables. More coming soon in other versions.

Thankyou all for your very kind words.

Uhg, I just battled other T-Rex after a big hit from the other cavemen. Can you bring the T-Rex into your cave for cooking?

Edit: Crap other T-Rex is coming!

Edit Two: Woah, I am awesome!

Posted Image

Edit Three: After being attacked by two other tribes in the 100 seconds before the T-Rex I was at a huge loss. I quickly got three other hunters and started to attack the T-Rex. But I was being mauled by other dino, and while being mauled I got killed by the T-Rex.

I'm going to load my old save and try agian sometime.

Hey, I have a suggestion for a special class. Maybe after you have trained enough cavemen in each group you can get a teacher class. You would say what it would teach before it appeared though, and after you teach it the one groups things, instead of doing the job you taught it, it teaches the untrained cavemen of that group. The teaching would take longer than with you, but not much.

Then when you get that you will have nothing to do. The teachers take Craig's role in the game away.

Particularly, for growth, teaching some preparers and gatherers only some techniques will help distribute the preparing of carcasses and berries more, allowing you to get the most out of both food methods.

You can do that? I thought you needed to teach both methods before they could work. I knew that you could tell them to stop following you, but I thought that was so they wouldn't get in the way in a fight. In retrospect, I suppose it was mentioned in the tutorial, but I didn't catch it.

My take:
I think it was unbalanced. Every time I had more than 8 cavemen I was swamped with attacks. If there were breaks to recover between attacks I could manage, but it was a never-ending flood of rivals and raptors and triceratops (oh my!)

Suggestions:
I think it would be awesome if you only had attacks at night or when it rains. That would add a whole new aspect of strategy to the game. You could even expand on the day/night system and make cavemen sleep at night, or tell stories around the fire...

I think it would be great if you could form a hunting party and go to a different land (like a forest, tall grass, mountains, or desert) to find food. You'd need to plan it well so you don't stay out too late or get caught in a storm...

Have a cave-painting minigame!

It would be nice if the predators couldn't come in the cave, making it more of a safe zone. That seems more realistic (why else would you bother living in a cave?) The rivals, however, would have no such restrictions... To keep that balanced, make it so you can't pick up rocks in the cave and have predators who can't get in leave after a while.

Issuing orders to hunters (Retreat to the cave! Attack that! Follow me! Stay here!) would be nice. That way I could keep a hunter or two in the cave, defending the preparers.

When are you releasing the cheats tongue.gif I really want them wink1.gif

I'll put them up if I get a place in the competition! Gotta love black mail. Nah - I'll put the cheats up after the competition ends.

All your suggestions are very useful, in case we decide to work on a sequel or something. The teachers class was a good idea that we considered long ago but felt it would be nice to just keep Craig as the teacher and have a few unlockables that helped Craig teach (like the target). Ideas like evolution, stages of strategy (hunting periods of the day, attacking periods of the day, etc), with the cavemen speaking around the fire and so on... the whole RPG element of going to other lands to attack other caves, etc... is all great but too big for an already completed game. The updates I am making aren't going to be such a size. But I will keep all your suggestions in mind.

Just so you guys know, version 1.3 will be out soon. It includes some increases in performsnace as well as a sort-of ending for the game (though more like a large unlock, after which you can continue playing). Other than that, there are just a stack of bug fixes and small tweaks. Stay tuned, it will be up as soon as YoYo comes fully back online (or in a day or so).

I thought it was a great feature and was hoping to use something similar to it for my game; unfortunately I have no clue about how to begin coding it.. :skull:

One thing. How can I escape if Caveman Craig himself is caught by a predator? I can't remember the tutorial telling me and I couldn't do anything but wait until my life bar went from 100% to 0%.

For the type-writing effect? You need the variable that has the whole message, and a variable that has the index of the message that the box is up to.. So for instance:

message="How are you?"
msgat="4"
Means the box will display "How ". Then just increase the msgat variable to make it 'type'. There are a few cool tricks like checking if the character at the msgat index is a SPACE or say the end of a sentence (.,?,!) and then making the pause between adding to msgat longer, and so on.

Really awesome game! Is his made in such a short time?

Yes, just under 30 days. My brother and I didn't really think about entering until then.

Indeed I am impressed that you got the game this far in only 30 days. The gameplay is fun and the graphics and sounds are pretty good. It gets a bit dull and repetetive after awhile though.
And it's rather unbalanced - as others have said you're going about your business teaching a new cave man how to throw rocks when BAM ten evil cave men and five raptors come out of nowhere and disintregate your entire little tribe.
I'll give it 7/10 - main con being that it doesn't last long and the uneven difficulty.

I found two bugs in the game: One is that a corpse was un-pickable and never went away - think someone else had this bug too.
The other is that one of my hunters got bitten by a velociraptor. After I threw rocks at it and killed it the guy was still hanging suspended in the air screaming. This was rather annoying since (other than losing a hunter for no reason) he was screaming all the time I couldn't know when someone was screaming for real.

Hi everybody!
Thanks to your great and consistent support, we've now updated the game to VERSION 1.3.

This attends many issues, all of which you can see on the topic's post, under CHANGES. Some of the major issues include:
- Split up the tutorial more logically and in smaller chunks.
- Rival Cavemen can now be eaten by Raptors and Head-butted by Triceratops'
- Added a very special unlock / bonus that signifies the ending of the game - however, you can continue playing afterwards.
- Added a "TAP SPACE" image that flashes above Craig's head when you're being eaten.
- Implemented death sounds for raptors and triceratops' that differentiate from their 'signature' sound
- Improved performance and decreased game size with better texture management (thanks Pim!)
- T-rex's can (and will) now eat Rival Cavemen.
- Tweaked triggers of difficulty

You should add a sound for when the rival tribe attacks. Something like a war cry. That would be really neat. :)

EDIT: i gotta get me one of those T-shirts :skull:
