Mystery Manor

:) Information

You find yourself in the middle of a murder, you have to Examine, Operate, Talk, and Use items to find evidence and crack the case. Just about everything is examinable and could be a part of the mystery. The game should take you maybe 10-20 minutes depending on how good you are at mystery games. Remember to examine things because sometimes it will help you know what to do.

The graphics are retro styled black and white and the music is custom made by myself.

:) Features

- Unique Examine, Operate, Talk, or Use Item system.
- Around 20 items
- Over 20 interactive objects
- A (challenging) puzzle/mystery to solve
- Custom retro styled black and white graphics
- Custom music
- And more

Update: Version 1.1 - 09/10/08

Version 1.1 includes:
- Arrow key movement (as well as WASD)
- Ability to choose fast (F) or slow (S) text speed on the toolbar
- A very minor bug fix (probably only affected me)
- A few grammatical errors fixed (nobody pointed them out, but I found them so I fixed them)
- A new and improved ending. Well, the ending is the same but there is a new "Congratulations" screen (so to speak) that is pretty cool

Great stuff. Nice, smooth gameplay, smooth inventory system, just everything was polished. I don't know if I missed something but when I caught the guy I had two blank inventory squares...

I played it. Got most of the stuff, I think. Tried using it on everyone and everything and the actions too but got stumped as to what to do next. Nice retro-GameBoy style!

@ the_hyrdax_lord
You did miss one item, but there are only 19 items. And as you probably realized, you don't need to use a few of them.

@ Waulok
I think there is one part that involves not using an item or operating something, but figuring a "puzzle" out lets say. If that's all you missed, you were probably pretty close to beating it.

Thanks, jls.

And as for the thing you asked about...It wasn't intentional but it isn't that big of a deal. I will fix it if I release another version, though.

If you got 18 items, you might even have all that you need. Like I said, there are only 19 items, but 20 slots. Also you don't use all 19 items. If you saved the game, you should try playing it again because you're really close to the end.

I loved this game. 10/10 Very minimal graphics that hold thier own do to the unique style and one hell of a brain bending puzzle. Also, the fact that you made the entire mystery take place in a single room that kept the player busy and you maintained a great sense of humor throughout; it had remnant memories of the the text, search, look, touch, action systems of early Sierra games (Larry, where did you go?!). I really hope to see you follow this up with a sequel or another game in the same fassion because I myself believe you did a really great job.

Thanks.

Yeah, with the type of puzzle I was going for, multiple rooms would have made it too crazy. I tried to throw (some) humor in there to make people examine things and keep going and not let the game just get stale. I'm glad people are taking to the graphics, I made them pretty simple on purpose and I was hoping people would be able to appreciate that.

As for the puzzle, that was the hardest part to do. It took me awhile to plan it out and make everything connected but also make it non-linear.

Glad you liked it.

Nice game. I wouldn't call it RPG-styled though, it's more of an adventure game (which is a good thing!). I finished it in a few minutes.

Some criticism though (spoilers!):

The place where the wrench is under should be marked somehow, if I hadn't talked to the guy standing there I wouldn't even know that there was something about it.
Welding the crowbar in the oven is unrealistic, but that isn't really important.
I think you should let the player enter the code into the safe.
That's what I can think of right now, but otherwise very nice game!

Edit: Ah, so thats what the bookcase text was. I couldn't make any sense out of it.

Yeah. By RPG-styled I meant the free-roaming walk around, talk, use type of deal.

As for your criticisms: Contains spoilers. Highlight to read
1. If you operate the bookcase it tells a map to get there, but since it was sort of hard, I made the guy say that the spot he was standing on was special.

2. Yeah, don't try that at home, folks.

3. I considered that but honestly it's a lot of effort for something pretty obvious, nobody will try to open it unless they figure out the combination first anyway.

Thanks for playing.

Oh, and good job beating it so fast. I knew this would come easy to some, but it's about a good difficulty for the casual gamer.

Thanks for the concern, jsmithLMSL.

But he's right (or he was right before he edited his post). I have no problem with you posting spoilers or asking questions that contain spoilers, but if you do post spoilers, please put them in white text so it won't ruin the game for those who haven't played.

well let me start off by saying that this is a great game, i'd give it a 23.4 out of 25.9 that being said i feel that the game would have been much closer to the ultimate 25.9 had it been longer with a little more depth of plot. But as i said it is a very well constructed game and was a joy to play. The artistic style was well chosen and could only have been better with perhaps a darker more grainy feel. but i digress, let me finish by saying that for all you reading this game is worth a play and will no doubt amuse you.

Keep up the good work bogey man, in my opinion you have the potential to become one of the greats.
Always remember that your games need more then just tons of content as in your earlier games such as palexia but that they need an artistic touch and a depth of plot that will keep players coming back for more time and time again,

Yeah, the game could probably use a little bit more plot. But the general idea was to just throw the player in the middle of it and let them learn the plot as they go, which there were some key parts to the plot I forgot to include in the game.

I'm glad you liked the graphics. I thought they fit well, but I was still expecting some posts like "LOL is my CPU broke or does this game have no color?"

Thanks for beta testing and reviewing, cheese_snaps.

A fun little game. This music is a bit annoying and repetetive but the game itself is pretty good.

Yeah. As I mentioned on the 64digits page...

I knew the music would be pretty hit or miss. I made it using a very basic program and I wanted it to be a pretty simple tune. I know it's (very) repetitive, but oh well. That's why you can turn it off.

Thanks for playing though.

A little bump (sort of) to let you know that I am working on making a small update. There are a few things that I noticed or that were pointed out to me that could use tweaking.

If there is anything you would like to see in an update, please let me know. I probably won't do game-changing things unless I really agree that they are needed. I will mostly just be fixing glitches and improving stuff that need it.

Also, I am considering making another game to this effect that might deal with time travel. But that's just an idea for now.

No! He was so close to getting away with it! :D

Nice game, I loved the graphics style.
Spoiler:
I found it a bit hard to find the wrench,I agree that the spot should be marked...
Let's see....
Graphics: 5/5
Gameplay: 4,9/5 (it was short but very interesting. I played it 3 times, just to make sure I didn't miss any item)
Music: 5/5 - the music... somehow fits with the graphics - it's kinda simple
Mystery: 4,8/5 (read spoiler)
Overall: 5/5

Sequel?
