Oh goodness, don't tell me you're just drawing a sprite over the screen.

He is. QUICK! HE'S A NOOB! FLAME HIM! TROLL HIM!

Make an engine yourself before you decide to criticize a simple example such as this.
Also, if you think you're so high-and-mighty that you have the freedom to put down a member's efforts, make one yourself, make it better, THEN you can brag all you like.

Back on topic: Nice example. simple, and ends with a quick and easy effect that runs fairly fast :)

Pff.. ofcourse it runs fast.
It's just a sprite with a blend mode after all.

Yeah, that was the point - right?

A simple example for members who are new to programming, resulting with fairly good looking effects.

hmm, it's not the best solution for flashlight, BUT i made quickly in gm a sprite that looks like you're wearing glasses, try it, it's cool :) also the quality of it is horrible  but it is just for testing the idea

The solution I use for a flashlight is to raytrace until a wall or floor is hit, back trace a few steps, then define a small point light at that position. It has no problem working with other lights and as you walk and shine the light, the light flickers a bit which gives a creepy horror vibe.

Depends. Without knowing anything about your project, I'll just give you some generic advice : Check your object depths are correct. The lower the number is, the later it is drawn onto the screen.
