Sonic The Hedgehog

(I guess the title is now SegaSonic, since that's what the title screen says. Oh, well, I think it's cool anyways.)
Posted Image

Hey, people, this is my newest game. It's based off the Sega Genesis Sonic games, some of the best games in the universe. It's coming along pretty nicely, I think.

There are currently six rooms:
1st: Title Screen
2nd: Mini-test level (rolling tube test)
3rd: A full level, with a mini-cutscene at the end.
4th: A full level, with boss at the end.
5th: Cutscene
6th: Save Level

Controls:
Left/Right Arrow Keys - Move
Up - Look up
Down - Crouch
Spacebar - Jump
Spacebar (in air) - Quickshield / Homing Attack / Double Jump (Electric Shield) / Bounce (Bubble Shield)
Down + Spacebar - Spinball
Enter - Continue on Title Screen
R- Restart

Features:
- Title Screen
- Sonic
- Rings
- Boxes/Computers/TVs (Rings / Extra Life / Blue Shield)
- 360 Sonic Engine (Based originally off Damizean's)
- Springs
- 3 Levels
- A Mini-Cutscene
- A Boss Fight
- Longer Cutscene
- Loops
- Quickshield
- Homing Attack (Early Stages, not perfect yet)
- Electric Shield (Activate by pressing F10)
- Bubble Shield (Activate by pressing F11)
- Moving Platforms
- Dynamic Bridges
- Jump-through platforms
- Rolling Tube... things
- Badniks

Just one question, how is it "not your average fan game"?

...so?

I just needed a catchy-ish title... I guess I'll just change it to "exact clone of a million other games".

In my opinion you didn't modify the physics engine that Damizean made but added a lot of gimmicks into it. Things that you should fix:
1.Sonic is too slow for a Sonic game fix it.
2.You are using the death sprite wrong, remove the last frame in it.
There are more but I can't remember them.

Thanks, Bond.

And Dark Team,
•Okay, I'll speed Sonic up, I guess.
•Yeah, I knew the death sprite thing, the second frame is for drowning, I was just curious to see how it would look.

This is really amazing!!!!!
The physics were very nicely done, sounds could use a bit of improovement, but were also good,
I found very little bugs, but what really caught my eye was the level design.
Truly great stuff man!
10/10

PS: Would you mind making a mirror?
yoyogames takes sooo long to load for me.

Thanks!
I'll get up another host soon.

Also, New update!
• Death Sprite
• Largely updated rolling. Now, when holding the direction you're rolling, you have almost no deceleration, and going down slopes is easier.

I guess this is going to be one of the best Sonic games ever!
And I love the cutscene at the end. :skull:
By the way, how did you do that to let Sonic bounce off the boss? I need a similar code to let Sonic bounce off euhm... star... things... which can be found in the Spring Yard zone.
Did you write the code by yourself?

Eh, I just set the direction to point_direction(thingbouncedfrom.x/y, player.x/y) <- ya know, and set the speed to 4... actually a lot more basic than you might think.

And, I started off with Damizean's engine, then worked from that, adding biiiillions of things. :)
If you got the version from the mirror, it was probably a moderately older version. The yoyogames is always the most recent.
Which reminds me, I think I'll add an updated mirror now.
Thanks for trying my game, I played yours, it's pretty awesome.

(Newest Mirror: Download)

Here's a Glacier Crash preview, too. :skull:

The code you gave me didn't work in my game, but I used the same idea:
y_speed = cos(degtorad((point_direction(id.x,id.y,BounceThin
g.x,BounceThing.y)+90)))
*(BounceThing.power) - sin(degtorad((point_direction(id.x,id.y,BounceThin
g.x,BounceThing.y)+90)))
*x_speed;
x_speed = cos(degtorad((point_direction(id.x,id.y,BounceThin
g.x,BounceThing.y)+90)))
*x_speed + sin(degtorad((point_direction(id.x,id.y,BounceThin
g.x,BounceThing.y)+90)))
*(BounceThing.power);

I'm also using it for my boss.
But thanks for the idea!

By the way that new level looks awesome! But the cutscene is a bit unrealistic. :P But that doesn't really matter.

its cool, but...

sonic is way too slow
there werent enough enemies
i was able to use spin dash in the air somehow (i think it was after i went off a spring)
the walking/running sprites are cycled through too fast (even if you speed up sonic, they still change too fast)
spin dash was even slower than running it seemed

thats about all i found that needs improvement/fixing, other than what you already have lined up

Great creation! But you could make Sonic faster. You can put sound and music files over file into folders too, because it'll make loading faster and newer games uses this. But out of topic, you could make game more originally (make something else than Green Hill, because there are tons of remakes as this), but never mind. Game looks good to continue with making. Keep it up!

BTW: Did you really make all Sonic 360 moves, bridges etc. by yourself?

Woah, sorry, people.
I've moved away from this game... sadly-ish.
So, many people told me it was too slow. I guess I'll speed him up... should I update again soon.

It was originally based off Damizean's 360 engine, but every "gimmick" outside basic movement was mine.

Very nice game! I had a lot of fun playing it, played through the test levels, and it left me wanting more by the time I got to the glacier acts. http://gmc.yoyogames.../lmaosmiley.gif

+ Good title screen, great production values overall
+ Great game engine
+ Nice music
+ Enemies, boss all worked out very well
+ The Save/Stage select "level" is a really cool addition

- Not enough levels. Can't wait to see more!

I really didn't find any flaws at all with the game, and in my opinion the speed of Sonic was just fine and didn't feel all that different than from the Sonic games on Genesis/Mega Drive.

Great job and I'm sad to see that you've considered moving away from this project. With the engine and all, you could create a really good Sonic game if you put enough effort and time into it.
