Description
Carpe Universum is an intense Shoot 'em Up (SHMUP) game that features a music driven spawning system.

Also, you will be able to roll to dodge bullets. This means that you will never be hemmed in by bullets, if you die, you'll only ever have yourself to blame.

My objective with this game is to build a very intense shooter by encouraging aggressive play through the way the gun works and with the shield charge. The gun only fires if there's less than a certain number of shots already in existence, so if you approach really close to a target it fires a whole lot faster. The shield charge destroys bullets and enemies in your way but retreating from that position is much slower.

However, you can roll to the left and right at any time and you are completely invulnerable while rolling. This allows you to stay mobile.

The aim of all this is to encourage very dynamic play where the player roams around the entire play field rather than just sticking to the bottom of the screen all the time.

Looks amazing. Downloading now, I'll edit if no one replies before that.

EDIT:
Hm, nice start. It's a bit hard to read the directions while the games going and all. Maybe make P pause the game (Do an infinite loop then when you press P again use break; to exit the loop, very good clean method to pause the game) The gameplay, graphics, and effects are amazing. I was in awe. The bullets sometimes became too hard to dodge with how fast you moved. And um that's about it, besides the fact the special moves can be very hard to dish out during a flurry of bullets flying at you, since often you get hit while you're doing the combination.

I like the selection of special moves and how they can be used left/right handedly for lack of a better term. I think there was too much white in the background, although it did make the bullets more readable, it also made the game seem very flat. The numbers on the screen didn't give very valuable information to me, as I had no idea what they meant.

I'm digging the game so far. The special attacks will make things a lot more interesting in the full game. Keep up the good work.

jak: Holding the X key to fire the seekers also slows the ship, making it easier to dodge between bullets.

Kindred: I've tried a black background. It looked terrible. I'm still convinced that it's just that we've all been conditioned to expect a black background, which is silly. The number at the bottom left is your score, the one 3/4 to the right is the fps value and the last number is your position in the level. The last two numbers are just for my debugging really.

One of the objectives of this game is to have no artificial progression. If you get better at playing the game it will be because you've become more skilled at playing the game. The combo system creates an immense amount of depth for good players to really excel.

Just put up a new version of the demo. The music effects work now and the combo system has been simplified to 3 button combos. You only have to press two directions then the fire key now.

Do let me know how you guys feel about the combo system and the scoring system.

Alright, it's been some time since the last release. I've put up a new version with huge changes (updated the original post) as I'm gearing up to submit this game for IGF 09. I would really appreciate any feedback you guys have.

Demo was short, but fun.
I really like how the music adjust itself to whats going on in the game really help.
Another thing is you can die you just loose points which is also cool.

My only complaint is when you are going through the tutorial the fading text is hard to read.
